Dissecting Miss Daisy: Mighty Car Mods' Subaru powered VW Beetle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2015
- When the guys from Mighty Car Mods decided to build a "sleeper" VW Beetle we knew the result was going to be something special.
Their 1974 VW Beetle might look like an old, beaten up stocker but inside it lives a 400hp, turbocharged Subaru EJ25 motor controlled by Haltech's Elite ECU.
In this video Scott examines the build and explains how this fine example of 1970's technology works in unison with Haltech's high tech devices.

Scott seems to only be getting better and better on camera. I love these style of videos, super informative and i'm sure it gets other people excited to build stuff for themselves.
+mans “mansalans” alans They say practice makes perfect:)
+haltechecu I definitely can't complain when a new video comes out.
Scott, just wanted to say you're a great speaker and seem really comfortable in front of the camera. Keep up the great work and great videos!!
Hold the phone. Tuning fork has his own channel and I was not informed?
yeah I only just found it lol
what is his channel called?
lol you're on it :D
+1 for Tuning Fork! Nice job, Scott.
I foresee this channel growing in subscribers very quickly if you keep doing videos like this.
I am REALLY enjoying this series from you guys, the videos are incredible, have MCM been helping you produce or did you hire some awesome video guys or what haha, to top it off scott is really looking comfortable in front of the camera and explaining all the intricate details.
I love this presentation - so clear and informative. More please!
I know this was hard for you to make, speaking, camera and all. I was blown away by your stage presence though, KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING, your shyness will fade away once it clicks, even if it doesn't who cares, SCOTT! were all here to see all the nerdy bits
Thank's Scott, I did not know that your Elite System was so advanced. I learned something new. Thank's again, Elwood
Good job Scott. Quality hosting and composure.
Great advertising for Haltech. Going from 40 HP to 400 HP represents a lot of challenges not discussed here. But I am pumped and I am hooked . I will send you my money tomorrow Haltech.
Tuning Fork is awesome! Great video man!
G'day I had the same model years ago, I would love this one, great build John
love how much the little bugs suspension flexes when that ej25 is reved
Really informative video, thanks Scott!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Great vid scott, keep making these
Scott from Haltech is one of the unsung MCM heroes!
You guys have definitely sold me on Haltech, between SuperGramps and this. Very impressive.
Miss Daisy looks amazing and it goes really fast sounds with Subaru WRX Engine awesome Good job Marty Moog👏👏👏 from Mighty Car Mods
Awesome job Scott! Can't get enough of the technical side of things.. Could you do a video on timing and how it affects your power and efficiently? You rock, Tuning Fork!
awesome video Scott! Me and my wife is probably gonna move to AUS, hope you're there to supply me with good stuff! Subscribed!
Excellent overview! That ECU has some awesome features. I'd love to do boost by gear once I'm running enough boost to lose traction!
That is awesome indeed, would love to see this sleeper in action on the streets.
Such a great build. I love the throttle conversion to pedal sensor that allows horsepower limiting under full throttle so that wheelspin can be controlled. .
Tuning fork you rock mate much love and respect to you . I love the mcm driving Mrs Daisy VW bug they did a great job on the project
Insane crazy, driving miss Daisy!!
Cool video, was really keen to see more of the car.
omg when the whole car torques when u rev it looks so awesome on that lil super beetle
that is one sick beetle..sounds great
Thank you Scott, that was very informative =)
Great job buddy you just answered a lot of my questions!! I still think that you should build more of these somehow building in a bigger more aggressive clutch.
That sweet rumble, love it!
Nice video. Thanks tuning fork Scott
awesome video! one day I'll build a car worth putting a Haltech ECU in.
+Jason454ss Keep that dream alive:)
+haltechecu been managing a parts store for five years the dream will never die.
+Anthony Buscemi wait....how are you gonna make power?? if you don't upgrade internals... and your gonna be NA....whaaa??
Freakin coolest build- huge fan of haltech And mighty car mods
Another great video tuning fork!! Keep it up
One of my all time favorite sleepers.
That sound... so awesome...
Watched the MCMTV videos and wanted more info about the "other" setup pieces not mentioned. Grat follow through from HALTECH..
your the man Scotty please come open a tunning fork across the ditch in nz
Nice work Scott
Man that sound, I couldn't stop smiling once he fired it up.
Holy crop I need one off those setup.... It's wicked
That Volkswagen Beetle looks amazing and it goes really fast on the race track
I learned how to drive on a WV type I and I have always wanted to build a sleeper bug but I want to do it with an air cooled WV motor. You can jug & stroke them out to almost 2.4 liters and with two turbos they can make about 400hp. I thank that would be cool
TRIGGERED! I love Subarus too. Where I grew up there was a big culture of Subaru drivers. I’m talking about the mid ‘70s when most of the country didn’t even know what a Subaru was.
The other thing is that it wouldn’t be my daily.
good job. nice to have a bit more info on the bug
Just a cool guy, making cool videos about cool stuff. cool.
We all know you're the brains behind MCM hahah. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more videos like this, really interesting :)
Such a bad ass conversion
wow didnt know haltech had a youtube channel, awesome :)
My 12 year old daughter loves this car. We are currently looking for a suitable cheap Beetle that her and I can put together. I hope to find a donar 2.0 EJ to install. I wish that I could afford the Haltech Elite to control it. I will however probably have to use a fatory one or a Megasquirt. Great build and seeing this build over on MCM has really made her excited. Tuning Fork! If you want to give a Haltech Elite away, I know one little girl that would be quite excited to have one!
Very cool! Loved the video!
Love the sound! Being a 4 cylinder boxer motor the Subaru motor doesn't sound all that different from the original VW unit.
+Simon Coles would be more of a sleeper if they welded a stock vw muffler on the thing so it makes the obnoxious tweetybird sound
+ZetaReticula alien Stock VW muffler would be way too restrictive for the power this motor's making...
I'd love to have an episode when Super Gramps gets more powah! on the specifics of dyno tuning with the Haltech system. Things like how you're getting the best ignition timing, valve advance, boost, etc.
hope MCM links to this. It answers tons of questions from their fans
5* loved knowing a bit more about Miss Daisy! Sounds mean as hell
Great video and informative.
Bloody brilliant!
Very very great explanation.
I drive a VW T3 Kombi fitted with an EJ22. Classic VWs and Subis are a great combination. Basically Subaru shows how to build a proper Boxer engine.
this is a wonderful job
Awesome job!
Great vid, picked up a few great things on there. Would be happy if that was an hour and even more detail.
awesome work guys. appreciate the great effort. Scott, I have question for you. Do you recommend haltech EMS for mazda 13b rotary?
hey Scott excellent work on your part!
but the 6 inch tires kill the whole deal as far as making it an effective sleeper.
no wonder you had to turn the horsepower way down.
suggestion for next project sleeper:
Corvair Monza,
has huge engine compartment, and wider stance...
you could pull the entire engine and transmission out of a Ford Firestar van ( front wheel drive) 4. 2L V6,change axles & struts. adapt mounts for rear engine compart.
then work your magic!
supercharger? turbocharger? maybe some nitrous oxide? or just put bigger fuel injectors on it? with custom exhaust?
and you should have plenty of room left inside for some 9 - 10 inch wheels that will stay inside of outside fenders...
as well as reworking the front suspension and steering...
an splash a nice paint job on it, and then model with Antoinette Soto holding a checkered flag!
I did not know that Chuning Fork had his own Channel!!! 😳 SUBBED of course! I wish he did Tuning in the Colonies, I TRUST him!
Great video but near the beginning you mention 1970 Beetle but the example you have is a 1973 on model. The 1600 engine arrived in 1971 with th Superbug but was name changed to the L with curved front windscreen in 1973 and retailed in Australia for $2650 plus O.R.C. The 1600 was available a little earlier in the type 2 sedan, in the flashback and in the wagon with later once featuring fuel injection. I apologise in advance for any errors or omissions.
Thanks mate.👍🏻👍🏻
Good job guys
Please do some rust removal for Miss Daisy :) Great engineering Mate!
Nice work Tuning Fork.
Scott I always see you helping the mcm guys, I have always wondered what car do you drive?
+santrade10 This will shed some light on your question: ua-cam.com/video/D_Av9RTzBBw/v-deo.html
Mcm beetle vs dung beetle street outlaws
+Liam Mcgrath Now that would be a good grudge match:)
+haltechecu it would be a mission to make possible but would be really good are marty and moog going to usa for a roadkill episode ?
+Liam Mcgrath first thing that crossed my mind what the episode ended =P (mcm)
+William Witte gotta feeling the dung might win though
yeah me to.. drag slicks + nitrous and AZN seems to have a waaay better cluch installed
CHOONING FORK! ( Lol. Sorry, had to. ) I didn't know you had a channel! Subscribed.
whats chooning?
i love it how daisy choped super gramps, it must be close to being a 10 second car
Great video...
one thing i love about all beetles is how close together the pedals are cuz it feels all race-car-ish
Cool vid, Scott.
Haltech always amazing!
i rated, i subscribed and this is my comment.. thanks for the video, i found it helpfull.
You guys could really use some of MCM's production quality, a once over levelling the audio and some varying shots such as closeups of parts and panning shots would really take it from a B+ to A grade video. Awesome as though guys!
I think this is the most i've ever heard tuning fork speak on camera ever lol
Really cool man 😄
I'll be purchasing myself a Haltech Sprint RE shortly.
Cool products! Mech to Elec throttle! Temp sensor triggers!
That MCM beetle and the dung beetle that Asian and farm truck have from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma US would be a good race. They make the same power and both are boosted. One is air cooled with a pull Thur system carb and the other a ej25 with twins. It would be super close. Oh and both are manuals
Would be nice to have info on the whole build and not just the ecu and wiring side of it. Like what transmission are you using I know form experience that a stock beetle trans will yard sell with 100hp, how did you run a vss, and maybe the a bit on how you guys did the cooling.
Check out the Mighty Car Mods channel - the whole build was featured there. That's why we didn't really want to repeat everything they've already covered and instead focused in detail on the parts we were involved with.

Exhaust Clip made my Ears wet
nice work tuning folk
Awesome video! Btw, what is the song in the beginning?
Scott is the best
I saw a fair bit of rust on the floorpans in the MCM video, did they fix it later during the build or just put in the new drivetrain and call it a day?
very cool!
This thing would dominate at Hot Rod Drag Week.
Damn that sounds nice..
Love it so much
What Haltech Elite unit are you using, 2000 or 2500 and does it come with the whole harness you guys used to install on the Beetle. That You and love the built.
They should develop a kit for this conversion. I'd pay good money for this insanity.
Very cool!!
