  • This video is from my last seminar where I show how to apply an ankle lock. The Straight Ankle Lock is one of the most effective leg locks in gi Jiu Jitsu. Last weekend at worlds it was used in many matches including the final match in rolsterweight with Mikey Musumeci scoring a 12 second submission win. I explain concepts in this video for how I Lock the foot into position along my rib cage and the mechanics for a strong finish. This is my favorite leglock in BJJ right now.

Thank you. For how basic and simple it may look, finishing an ankle lock is an art on itself.

Thanks for this. Gold as always. LOved and used the combo you used for finish. To side then belly down. Lots of room to extend your back.

Can you show a few entries for the footlock?

Whenever I show people an ankle lock I tell them that every effective ankle lock is an illegal ankle lock since the finishing mechanics should ideally by like a toe hold.

Hello Jon, may I ask a question? Is it possible to counter an ankle lock with another ankle lock?

Bunny Azorth I feel like it would be hard if I’m in correct position the guy would have a hard time getting to a good position on my foot. Maybe if someone did a poor attack in my foot I would have time to transition and control theirs then set up my own attack

What are the pros/cons of your leg position here vs ashi garami? Do certain situations favor one or the other?

Ashi Garami puts you at risk to being disqualified in ibjjf once you cross the hip. This one there is no risk for disqualification in the ibjjf, plus this leg position is easier to rotate to belly down vs ashi garami.
