Man thinking about the original gravity mod makes me so nostalgic. A bunch of minecraft youtubers loved to screw around with it back in the day stuff like gravity cops and robbers gravity survival unique parkour and adventure maps. I used to think it was the most revolutionary thing since sliced bread to have minecraft planets that actually behaved like celestial objects.

the problem with all these mods is that its a cube model, not spherical. With a spherical model the player would slowly turn towards the next rotation as they get farther away from the center of one side to prevent the crazy switching you had.

There was this Minecraft-inspired sandbox game called Patterns which had planetary gravity like these mods, in addition being able to detach "static" structures from the ground which would give them realistic physics and having more shapes than just cubes (e.g. pyramids, various prisms). Was pretty fun to mess with and the game had a lot of potential but sadly it got scrapped early on in development and remained stuck in "early access", a shame really.

Fun fact: There was a game like this with small voxels, cube-shaped planets, and gravity that worked just like this, called Stellar Overload. It had a lot of quality and soul, but the devs went out of business because they went straight for their dream project with a massive bank loan and (to my knowledge) no marketing which screwed them over, so the game is no longer available (through legitimate means). They sadly didn't get to finish it, but it _did_ get far enough to still have a decent experience with it.
It even had some crazy stuff like custom-made vehicles made with the same voxels as everything else, weird little cube-shaped robot enemies that mimicked blocks, and a planet that was broken into many smaller cube-shaped pieces.
My own dream project is actually a spiritual successor to it, though it's a long ways off. I'm tempted to eventually just try and make it anyways and open-source it, since I want it to fit into the niche of games like C:DDA and Dwarf Fortress anyways (highly complex and deep with an emphasis on mods and player choice), but I have a particular vision for the world it takes place in and I'm worried people would completely de-rail it from that.

Ya I’ve thought a game like Minecraft but on planets would be cool just dealing with multidirectional gravity makes things a lot more compex than I originally thought
I made a simple player and ai / npc before in a few game engines that could walk around planets and it was hard having to design it to basically work at any direction especially since many tools in game engines are built for one up axis in mind

It would be pretty cool if The End had this kind of gravity in the base game. Maybe for The End Update? Of course refined and polished more. Perhaps a visual on where the gravity is so players know when they get too close. The end is kind of like an asteroid belt so maybe end islands can move around and crash into one another causing chunks of them to scatter. End islands with end cities could have a force field around them to stop them from getting destroyed. The size of the end island corresponds to the size and strength of the gravitational poll.

That last mod is nice but it is missing one thing.
Some may disagree but I think there needs to be some sort of dynamic blocks. In other words either a generation algorithm or simply setting all blocks effected to be reotated as well. This would make the transition from grav well to grav well much better.
One issue woth this is we are trying to make blocks into spheres there may be some gaps, this is where an algorithm to fill in these gaps might be nice.
Something like "If bigger then half a block leave empty, else fill with similar block and set rotation to gravity."
It's not perfect but it would help otherwise it's literally trying to set gravity to a square, instead it could be at least a hexigon or oxtogon.
It would still be the blocky world we all know and love but with less headache.

Now I really want to see a Minecraft mod that turns the world into planets which have fully functional gravity, dynamic day/night cycles, and atmospheres. Additionally, there would be outer space with full zero gravity and no atmosphere (being in unprotected in space damages you like being in the void under the world would). Also, the ability to create spacecraft (I am thinking something that works similar to the create mod airships). These spacecraft could have artificial gravity, active propulsion and even potentially a place to grow plants and keep mobs.
By the way, there might be a way you can manually create something that kind of resembles a Minecraft cube planet using the immersive portals mod, you can even possibly make it flat to the perspective of a player on the planet (with no visual transition between sides or awkward camera/gravity flipping)

I think the main Problem of all of these beeing implemented is how gravitation wroks there. it is with a radius and if you fill out a radius in a 3D Enviroment, you get a ball, not a cube. so Minecraft would basically have to give up it's core theme of beeing blocks for gravity, as without not blocky surfaces, walking around a planet is just a pain.

What if you had the blocks slightly overlapping and they rotate upright, oriented to your position and view. Then on a large sphere the sides and underside might look odd you wont see them. Then you'd have them fluidly orient to your position so you wouldn't have jarring gravity flips.
Probably completely conflicts with the standard rendering system but would be the smoothest way to have gravity.
