Optoma GT1080 DLP Projector Repair for Intermittent Lamp

- This Optoma GT1080 was sent in after a new lamp was unable to solve the issue. The projector would sometimes light the lamp and other times(more often) would not. After verifying the color wheel, resoldering the ballast control connector and making sure the Mosfets were OK, I measured voltages and noticed the 380 was only showing 320-330v. Then the 150V would drop to 120 or so when the ballast would try and fire.
I used my thermal camera to investigate components that might be passing more current than they should and I noticed the output choke/inductor for the ballast was running hot. Upon closer physical inspection the "glue" I thought I saw was actually melted plastic. The coils had flashed over to itself either due to manufacturer defects or the specs of the part are very close to the edge. Either way a new power supply board was used to eliminate any other defects on that board and that returned reliable function.

More videos, more knowledge. Excellent video my friend Frank. The single fan design in this machine is just madness! The only projector I gave ever seen with a single fan in person is a cheap 100 buck OEM T6 with only a blower fan I am testing right now. Kudos man!
I am constantly impressed/cringe at some of the manufacturing methods and how they have evolved. This is a good example. I cringe at the idea of one fan, but impressed that it works so well.
Thanks for the video Frank, great to have a reference disassembly video for my GT1080Darbee. Mine has had a few issues, the lamp hours and settings keep randomly resetting to factory defaults. I eventually figured out that the "fan locked" message was happening due to power outages that restarted the projector while still hot. If I just let it cool down it works properly.
Really? Resetting the lamp hours on its own? That is a weird one. It almost sounds like wherever they store the info(onboard eprom? eprom inside an MCU?) is not getting reliable voltage. These do seem like the epitome of manufacturing. Everything is incredibly compact.
@@FixitFrank yeah it's weird. So since I have no idea how many hours the lamp actually has on it, I guess I'll replace it when I think it needs replacement. It's my first projector so I assume brightness will eventually degrade.

Hi Frank, i have been watching many of your videos and i haven't quite found any that touches base on what I seem to be experiencing. My projector starts and runs but tend to reach a point where the remote no longer works and will not respond, then at times the screen blacks out as well...any idea what might be causing this issue?..Thanks Chris
Whoa. I can't say I have ever seen that happen. Does the button panel on the projector still respond when this happens? Is it also a GT1080 like the video? There could be a few causes for that but I would need more info.
@@FixitFrank The manual buttons also do not respond when this happens, I have to unplug and system resets...

Oh wow. That is weird. The fact that is locks up is really really strange. It could be a failing mainboard but the fact that it works after you reset it makes me wonder about some other parts.
Are you in the states and are you pretty comfortable with a volt meter? The easy repair is a new mainboard but those are not remotely cheap. I think something is bad and getting hot and then causing the main control IC to lock up.
If you're in the states and wanted to, I would be happy to look at it for you for free and see if I can figure the cause. If you are comfortable with a volt meter, there are some places to check voltages internally but you need to be comfortable working around high voltage .
@@FixitFrank i am willing to use a volt meter, totally comfortable working around voltages...how ever i think i have to spend a bit more time investigating...I had a twin projector i used in my garage and decided to swap it out in mean while with this malfunctioning unit...I had never experienced any issues with this garage until I made the swap and connected it up...now thi8s unit is also experiencing malfunctions and over heating plus a screen blackout after approx. 1-2hr of use...very strange. I have decided to rework all the electronics and connected components to see if there is any obvious problems...I will get back to you on what i possibly find...in the mean while I will hook up the first bad unit in the garage and see if there's any improvement. That may tell me at least there is a component issue.
My lamp is not coming on and the right warning is on, but I exactly like this one... Just need to know if I can see the fused bulb with my eyes
I would try another lamp first. That is the best way to know. But make sure the store will give you a refund if it is not the lamp.
Is there any way to visibly see if the lamp is fused without testing the projector with another lamp
Not easily. These are arc lamps so there is no filament to check. The only way to tell is with a visual examination or a known good lamp. The tube inside is the arc tube. It should be clear and clean. If it is black/grey/warped or cracked it is no good. If you see small white cloudiness, that might also be bad. If the lamp is around 1500-2000 hours old, I would suspect it to be bad.
Hello, I just bought a used Optoma HD26 and it seems the projector would stop projecting for about 10 seconds or so then it would start again. This happened approximately about an hour after usage. Any suggestions?
If the light is staying on, I would start with the input source first. Make sure its not a bad hdmi cable or connection to the projector. Next time it happens, press menu and see if that shows up while the image is blanked. If so, its an input issue. If not, its something with the mainboard (if the lamp stays on). If the lamp is going off and on, I'd try another lamp first.
My Optoma - GT1080HDR is turning on for about a minute or two and then shuts it down. The power light blinks red and lamp light is solid red/amber. There is no light on temperature. Do you think it's bulb ? I couldn't find a way to clean the filter. The say it's easy in their manual but I can't get the side intake and exhaust vents off. Appreciate your help Frank
I suspect it's merely a bulb issue. If it is the original lamp, then it would be near the time to change it. Also, only some GT1080HDRs were shipped with a filter. It was an option they used for areas of the world that were deemed dustier than others. Weird way to do it in my opinion. What I saw was they add a plastic assembly that sits over the vents that holds the filter. If you can look in the side and see the guts, you don't have a filter model.
If you buy a new lamp, be sure you can return it, just in case it is not the lamp. I suspect it is, but better to be safe.
@@FixitFrank Thanks Frank, the projector is 13 months old, around 130 hours usage, just outside warranty. It turns on for 3 minutes with projection and then shuts off automatically. Fan seems to run ( I can hear it)...not sure what's wrong.
I have a Optoma GT1080 short throw projector and my issue at hand is the internal speaker inside of the projector has finally failed on me. Any videos on how to replace the speaker inside of one of these?
I don't have any specifically replacing the speaker but you can see the tear down on a few GT1080s if you search the video page. There is one video around Christmas time that may be very helpful

It sounds like the polarizers are failing. That projector is around 10 years old. Thats is about how long Epson tends to last. Check the panel alignment settings in the menu first. That might be the issue too.

Hi Frank! Just got here searching for replacing and cleaning a GT1070X, because the bulb just exploded today. I removed it just like in your video and saw broken glass everywhere. I will just order a new module and hope it will be as new. One thing I did not see or miss is the cleaning process. Before it broke, it started being a bit louder (something else besides the fan) and I am thinking that it has some excess dust somewhere that needs to be clean. Any advice would be helpful. Hi Leaota! Check this video as well. ua-cam.com/video/za-viIWXUlQ/v-deo.html The HD26 and HD141x are essentially the same. Slight differences but they should give you enough info. I have videos on both. Just search Optoma on the video page for the others.
I would be suspicious of the blower fan. That is likely full of dust. When bulbs explode, usually it is because the bulb gets too hot for too long. The blower fan that cools the front of the housing is almost always the culprit. The fan blades get clogged or coated with dust preventing efficient cooling air being pushed through the housing. Be sure that fan is clear enough(does not need to be perfect) and then your replacement should perform as the old bulb did.
Have a GT1080darbee. What should be the voltage on the lamp leads coming from the projector on startup? Is 16VAC normal and is there a way to test the lamp without a ballast?
It can't be measured safely or correctly with most meters. The ignition voltage can be 3-5KV at 20khz. The run voltage is around 100-120 also at 20khz(usually). Most meters top out at 600v to 1kv. The lamps are arc-lamps so they need a ballast to drive them. The only thing you can test on a lamp without a ballast is if its shorted or not.
What are the symptoms you're seeing?

@@FixitFrank Frank thanks for the quick response. I took the cover off. Everything looks new and intact. Double checked all connections, solder looks ok without tearing out all the PS and other boards. I get the red light on startup, press the power button and turns blue, no color wheel spinning, the fan doesn't turn on, no lamp, about 16VAC on lamp power when blue light turns on. Wondering if maybe a fuse? I can pull PS and check fuses but was hoping it was something simple like a lamp or connection. Thanks for your help.
Will the color wheel spin without the lamp. I am just thinking/hoping that maybe just a bad lamp from shipping. Just don't want to try fixing something when it could just be the lamp?
@@partickharrington1619 the color wheel has to start first. Without the color wheel spinning, the lamp won't do anything. It kind of sounds like a bad main board. On the opposite side of the power supply wire, the main board has a bunch of test points marked with the expected voltages. I'd check those. I wouldn't worry about the lamp or ballast. Until you solve why the color wheel isn't spinning up, the rest can be ignored. If you have the standby led changing color and nothing else it's most likely a main board issue. I've run into this a few times and can't figure out the cause.
Hey frank.. I have same projector.. mine isn't powering on and all my indicator lights are red. Where would you start??
Hi Chelsea, all 3 are lit up at once? That is unusual. I'd start by checking the power supply voltages to the mainboard. Kind of sounds like a bad mainboard though, just as a warning. Of course I dont have it front of me, so take that with a few grains of salt. Make sure you have the 5-12v to the mainboard and then I would check for regulators on the mainboard getting hot. This does not sound like a standard issue just as a heads up.
@@FixitFrank yes they're all three red.. we bought it off an online auction.. doesnt have remote.. no sound coming from it. I plug it in and those 3 light indicators are all solid red.. I just don't know where to begin.. its frustrating. And I know nothing about electronics to even check voltages.. it came in original box but no owners manual. I don't want it to be a $200 waste.

Hi Frank! thank you for sharing this great video. I have a GT1080darbee wich I dropped accidentaly on the ground. Imediatly i tried to power on and it shows the error (lamp failure). My question is, before change the lamp is there any part or component that should be inpected which can be cracked or damage from dropping?
I'd start with re-seating the lamp unless it is obviously damaged. There other parts that could have been damaged but I would try the lamp first.
@@FixitFrank I've already re-seated the lamp and also made a visual inspection with the parts assembled and could not find any clue for damage. So now I'll try to change the lamp and let see what will happen. thank you.

You're welcome! Thank you! I would check eBay first in case someone in the states has one. Otherwise, Time Projector should be able to get them. If the old wheel is still together, take a picture of it against a white sheet of paper to show the colors. Then send them that and they can match it up. Most of the time, the factory just loads up the segments in the order that you need them, balances the wheel and ships it out. gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com is their email.

At some point I want to consolidate my work spaces. I'm spread across my house and my day job. My boss is kind enough to let me use some space to do these repairs/videos but I'd really like to have one spot to do it. I'm hoping to do something about that this year at some point.

Like your videos very much ^_^. small question, what do you think is better projector Benq Ht3550 or Viewsonic PX727-4k.build, overall quality, picture quality, and maybe life span of these two projectors. (ht3550 has dynamic iris so I wonder how long does that last) I just can't decide :(.
would have gone for optoma but they don't have anything in this range with rgbrgb color wheel.

Thanks man! That is a tough one. I like the PX727 4K a lot. But BenQ is always a good direction to go. Anecdotally I have heard really great things about the Viewsonic. It seems to be the "dark horse" in the 4K game between Optoma and BenQ. The construction quality is going to be close in my opinion. That said, I have not seen the inside personally (in front of me, just by pics). Being that neither seem to use Pixel shift, I would look at price. The Viewsonic is definitely cheaper and it is slightly brighter(2200 versus 2000). 200 lumens is barely noticeable though.
Id probably buy the Viewsonic first. The BenQ doesn't seem to warrant the extra $500 or so in my opinion. Take this all with a grain of salt as I have not used either myself yet. This is purely my opinion going off the specs and what I have heard about them.

seeing you get all those projectors back to life is amazing. saw you tear down a few of the models I owned was impressive, never thought that some of them pack so much hardware inside. and on another side, some of the projectors are nearly empty :D. very happy that I found your channel.
The glass lens on mine has a smudge on the inside. I'm not sure how to go about cleaning it.
It has a smudge on the inside? Could you share a picture of it? Also, are you able to focus on the smudge?
Any chance you know the sizes of the two fans? Or even a suggestion to what fans to get to replace the originals?
There is a sticker on the side of each one(might be under some tape) that has the model numbers. That is what you want to get. Trying to substitute fans in a projector is a big pain. You need to match the obvious things such as size, voltage and amperage, but also the CFM and Stall reporting type. I tried to substitute a fan in an older NEC and it "worked" but it turns out the CFM was not quite high enough and the lamp was failing early.

You are very welcome! It says 36B65 so it sounds like you were very close! Check the output inductor that feeds the lamp(L3). I had one short internally due to arc flashing.

The problem was that one day the regulator, the mosfet and some resistors and tracks on the board suddenly exploded.

My worry is that your transformer has a bad winding. Hopefully just the mosfet failed and took out everything else and not the transformer. I had that happen on an HD20 power supply.

I would check the mainboard control to the ballast. That should show a lamp on signal, where the voltage drops from 4.8v down to 2.5-3v. I did a video recently on a BenQ W1070 where I show how to check the ballast control. The same thing applies to your Optoma. I suspect something on the mainboard is not calling for the ballast to start, or you have a defective lamp assembly. Make sure you have a known good lamp assembly to test with.
