Trick to putting on pants: They recommend putting the “New Hip” leg on first- so to do that ( Example Right Leg) grab your pants backwards and hold them with your right hand- slip you right foot into pants, this puts the pants left leg to the right of your body. Pull up the right pants leg then rotate your pants across your body to the left so they are now facing forward and in correctly and then slide your left leg in and pull them up. This method gets your pants out of the way allowing your new hip leg to enter the pants unobstructed by the left pants leg being on the floor. Kind of confusing but works like a charm.
Thank you for these videos. My mother is getting left hip replacement surgery in a couple months. She is 88 years old. We're very worried because of her age and all the extra precautions we have to take during covid. I'm taking care of her at home, so I really appreciate having this to help with recovery.
17 days out and I wish I had seen this video BEFORE I had my surgery! I broke almost all the rules and now my hip is sliding out partially when I’m standing and put all my weight on the UNaffected side. Like when the is no weight on my affected side. It’s Saturday, so I’ll have to wait until Monday to call my Dr. Thanks Guy’s..I learned a lot.
Every situation is different. There were different reasons why a replacement is needed. Not everyone is going to have the exact same instructions. What worked for you may not work for everyone.
Hey guys, I'm glad I came across this video. I'm about to go back to work hopefully in the security guard field. I've had triple hip replacement surgeries since March 5th of 2019. Left hip was replaced March 5, 2019. Right hip was replaced on my birthday, July 16, 2019. Then again one year to the day later. In June of 2020 I had two falls in two days. First fall was slipping in water during an indoor water main break. Fell from standing position with a full right side impact, then the next day due to being very sore I tripped in the grass falling from a standing position flat chested with a whipping action from mid chest and hips down. I literally heard a popping sound like your finger from your mouth. Right leg curled around my right leg as I screamed in agony. It was put back in place at the er only to have it pop out a week later picking up an apple from the floor. Pop goes the hip joint with the profound popping sound again. After replacing it again my surgeon gave me a brace to wear on my right leg keeping me from bending over. Putting the blasted thing on, another round of pop goes the hip joint. This time it tore the main muscle completely and my surgeon did the second right hip replacement plus had to graft my muscle back together on my birthday of 2020. I'll be using these videos to restrengthen my legs. I've been off work for a year now and about to return. Now you've both heard of a man who has had one dislocate three times. Thanks guys and keep up the Awesome work
@@Lolipop59 I have never fully recovered from these surgeries. I'm truly thankful because that is just a small example of my many injuries I've had. I am a Christian first but I know since God created the vast amount of stars and planets I believe that the moon definitely has an effect unique to each person according to his/her sign. I am a Cancer and am considered a moonchild. Only those born under the sign of Cancer can be a moonchild. It's pretty cool but sometimes not. We are also considered the most accident prone. What do you think? From first injury to last; agree 4-fell of front porch and split my head open and was unconscious, broke right arm in third grade, knee injury on barrel horse in 7th grade, also a 13ft fall into an empty creek bed of caliche landing square on my butt, was drop kicked down a seven step stair well in 9th grade, in 1981 fell through scaffolding 1 1/2 stories landing on concrete both knees first (it a like someone's hand pushed me at the right moment causing me to roll as I hit the ground & walked away, same job a six ft crosstie dropped from just a few inches land in the top of the third finger of my right hand and to this day it's flat, slipped in stripper water on a wax job at BSA, cut the end of my left thumb off at the kettle restaurant, caught myself on fire twice perfecting my fire breathing, had a heads on collision while stranded in the road, and my latest---slipped in water at work landing from a standing position in my right side, then from standing position fell flat chested. 2021 fell flat chested in my apartment with a heavy coffee cup about 1/4 of an inch shocking a sharp piece into my right hand. Three doctors and two chiropractors have said I should be in a wheelchair. I walked away from every one except the fall into the empty creek. The most miraculous was the head-on collision. No seat belt, both hands gripping the steering wheel with a white knuckle grip and upon implant I saw a wall of white. As it cleared from the outside of my vision into a small dot I was still gripping the wheel and a web shape shatter in the windshield right in line with my fists. I walked away from that only later to find I had broken both bottom ribs and torn the sinew from every rib. And I have necrosis in both wrists. God is not done with me yet
👋 to you all. I am almost at my six week check up for my 2nd dislocation surgery. I don't remember what I did to cause the first one, this newest one came after 2 falls within 4 days. I was exercising and lost my balance. Hip dislocation causes the most excruciating pain I have ever felt. (I have carried and delivered 4 children without painkillers. None of them felt like this.) my dislocations have happened 2 years from my previous surgery. I just want my life back. I don't understand why the surgeries don't last. Frustrating.
My apologies if somebody has already mentioned it but you can put a walker up against or over the top of your toilet so it has handlebars and it works perfectly. No extra equipment needed. I'm not sure why my doctor said no restrictions. im ignoring him for now. Im only 4 days post op. I needed to see any tips i can use and your videos helped. Thank you
Boy...I have been wanting surgery until watching this video! I live totally alone and now just the very basic movements can put me in trouble AND alone! WTF. I have to practice now & get prepared.
One dislike? Well we know what they can do with that. They can go out and come back in the door and rethink. Blessings to you guys. You've had some wonderful suggestions for me. And I have forwarded to friends that are actually physicians, and they get some great tips for themselves and for their parents. So thank you for
Hi.. I saw 4 videos related to THR & must say guyz have done amazing job. Regarding this video for how many weeks we should be keeping all these precautions? Is 6-8 week's time good enough?
thanks guys, excellent stuff.....SO if you use a squatty potty.....you have to put it away for 6-8 weeks after??? surgery or for how long??? I am pushing off surgery for right now....will be anterior approach. ??? Squatty Potty post surgery??? thanks for all you guys do. Best regards
Toilet aide is a good idea or the person might bend to far forward wiping. Socks need to be all the way on the sock aid or it frequently comes off before it pulls up the sock.
I am due for rt side THR in 2 weeks. Education folks say be very careful for 3 months. As you restrengthen the affected muscles you can return to normal activities moreor less. A lot depends on howcquicklybyou heal, and howcdiligentbyou are with exercises.
This is a great video! I’m 1 year post op on a THR, my procedure was neither posterior or anterior, it was posterior/lateral. I’m looking for any information I can find on mobility exercises I can do to keep my replaced hip healthy, as I’m only 40 years old and still very active with work and in the gym
What if you accidenly broke a precaution but dont feel worse? I had posterior hip surgery and they mentioned these, but never told me what i should do if I broke one or how long i need to follow them. They actually said I could be walking in a week, but also told me not to put full weight on my affected leg. Im confused. At the time I didn't ask questions because I thought it would be explained in my discharge paper but they don't say anything except to take pain meds and make an appointment.
I only wear leather slip on sandals so this should not be a problem. I live in the tropics so its the only foot wear i have. Getting new hip in July back in the tropics by November.
So much better than was explained to me and never demonstrated. Geez thanks guys! Anterior hip replacement July 27 from a fall. At post op found another fracture so on no weight bearing until Aug 22 worse than a cast bc I have to remember . Just sit outside now am going to RR with Walker. None of my fractures were displaced I felt only positional pain. I got a Dexa two weeks after break and operation….. Osteoporosis taking Alendronate. Well once just started. Not cancer but still a nightmare. I felt so healthy. 81 few days.
Yes this works but that level of uneven weight baring will fuck your body alignment up and make rehab later a much more difficult ond lengthy process. You should at a minimum be very concious of this and stretch to maintain rotation. Ideally you would have a banister on the other side too but since thats not the case most of the time having a cane or crutch on your strong side just to alleviate some of the excesive load you will be putting on the strong leg.
Hi, i have following Question I dislocated my hip after 10 years after full hip replacement can I do the fitness excersizes you recommendet as if after surgery? My doc said only I should be carefull nothing else...
Not all hip replacement surgeries require precautions. My surgeon did a lateral procedure. The only precaution does not affect most people. The only thing I could not do was swing the surgical leg out to the side. I am 18 months post-op. I still don't move my leg in that direction.😊

Very helpful! I had my surgery Tuesday evening and on Wed afternoon I was already walking with the crutches. Only a few steps of course!
Glad it helped.
I had anterior on both hips 2018 right side and 2019 left side. I was told that I had no restrictions either time, and I had no problems.
How is going now
Every situation is different. There were different reasons why a replacement is needed. Not everyone is going to have the exact same instructions. What worked for you may not work for everyone.
I am at the seven week mark and I can tell you everything these guys are saying is exactly right. Excellent advice.
Please help me
I’m preparing for mine
I’m scared
Thank you for your video on precautions after anterior hip replacement. I was doing a few things wrong, and will now correct them.
I just completed one month of hip replacement and I am very careful how I walk great video I have all the devices to use
You guys are awesome , you guys have helped me through my total hip replacement thank you
Our pleasure!
How did you find two wonderful guys that sound just like the two of you? Awesome 🤩

Thank you very much! Great help for PT students!
Thanks for the tips! Having second hip done in 2 weeks & forgot all this.
Could you share some good rehab exercises?
How are you now ?
Thank you both !!
You are very welcome!
I am at 32 years with my hip replacement and reviewing the does and donts.
The handle of the shoe horn works great for getting the heel of the sock over the heel of the foot with a sock aid.
How long do you need to be careful after hip replacement?
Ayye! Occupational Therapy gettin a shoutout💪

Are all these precautions forever or do you get to heal and get better and relax on the precautions.
These are temporary
Double hip bone replacement surgery how can
Very helpful, thank you!!

In Posterior approach , 90 degree bend restriction is permanent or for few weeks ?

Doesn’t that suck that they are not through in the instructions smh.
How long do these precautions need to be in place? How long do you not bend in the 90 degree angle when dressing, putting shoes on etc? Years? Months?
No reply! I want to know this answers, Please. I’m always catching myself bending to clean house, feed animals etc.
There's no answer?😢
Right at the beginning, they say for 6 to 8 weeks, or as your surgeon recommends.
@@1goofeygirlIt depends on the approach your surgeon used.
@@1goofeygirlthat’s because it depends on your surgeon, like they said in the video. Most surgeons will tell you anywhere from 4-8 weeks.
can you cross midline, with the non-surgery leg over the surgery leg instead ?
Left hip replacement 2015 today dislocated tried to tie shoe came here to be educated was told only don’t cross legs also Right hip replacement 2017
Sleeping on my stomach was the only position my hips could tolerate when having hip inflamation (arthritis)
I only wear leather slip on sandals so this should not be a problem. I live in the tropics so its the only foot wear i have. Getting new hip in July back in the tropics by November.
I'm having the lateral approach in April 2023. Very difficult time to find information on this approach.
Thanks. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What about bilateral. How do you step?
How long after surgery are these restrictions for ? Clarify please. If this is permanent is almost impossible to follow then.
Thanks!
So what is the answer to Afarro’s question? Thanks is not an answer.

What if you don't have a good leg?
Til when will one follow all precations? If i.t's 2 yrs more already, is it safe to not follow all these?
do i need to do all this even after 7 week post op?
They say 6-8 weeks. I took 8 weeks and made sure ot felt right

Hi, i have following Question I dislocated my hip after 10 years after full hip replacement can I do the fitness excersizes you recommendet as if after surgery? My doc said only I should be carefull nothing else...
Show how to sit in a car n drive
I will add this to our to do list!
How long i should not bend forward???
Is this temporary or permanent restriction?
i am 5 yrs from total hip replacement ......for how long should i follow those precautions?
Wow 😲
You should bunch up the pants leg with the reached and pull it up. Makes it easier
I am number 464 in the likes
If you do it by mistake without dislocating the joint, but just feel pain, is it bad ?
