Its fun to see this great song being appreciated 30+ years later! Steely Dan made musicians do their homework. As did the Allman Brothers, I was there on the East Coast.
Super helpful lesson Keith. I've been playing guitar for about as long as Steely Dan has been around.( Kind of gave my age where there, didn't I ). But I never played Steely Dan's Music. As much as I love them, I always thought it was just too hard to learn. But now after watching your lesson I'm going to start working on it. I'm an old dog but I'm not afraid to learn a nrw trick. Excellent lesson and you're so young to be loving such a great old group. That just goes to show you the music transcends time and age. Keep up the good work and I'm going keep following your lessons.
Great lesson for this number. We need more people to take advantage of this very simplified and comprehensive demonstration for this great sound track.Thank you bro
No need to apologize for being hooked on "Steely Dan" music. You are showing a high level of musical maturity. Steely Dan's arrangements and lyrics were above and beyond the typical pop hits. I have been a full time guitar player for nearly 40 years and still see "Steely Dan" as one of a musicians, musician type band. Great job on the lesson! 👍🏼🎶
This video was such a relief. So many of vids can be informative but so few have folks that can actually sing or let alone really understand the song! Thanks fellow Dan man....
Very talented young man...patiënt and thorough in explaining this song. I would never thought of trying this one out back in the "70's. To try and cover Steely Dan was something too difficult to even considder, so one just didn't.
Super helpful. Thanks! It knocks me out how many "normal" chords the Dan uses. When I was a kid I imagined they commissioned a secret chord foundry to invent one of a kind chords for them and it was impossible to figure them out! Great job.
Michael Marko - I would totally agree with you about a secret chord foundry to invent one of a kind chords...lol! I would listen to these songs in my teens as a newbie guitar player and could not imagine how they were getting those open, spacey type chords. Classy arrangements and great lyrics. I grew up in the 70's, been playing professionally for almost 40 years, and still think the best music, including Rock, Pop, Disco and Jazz came from the 60's-70's!
I was searchingfor this particular song to learn on my guitar and I found you 😊 I realize that this video is a few years old but I'm still going to say to you,... Thank you so much for a wonderfully explained tutorial🥰
Agreed! I"m just turning 66 and haven't had time to break it down due to raising a family of four and working a job unrelated to music. What a gift Keith! Many, many thanks! 😎👍 Subscribed!

This is a really cool lesson. Your teaching style was clear and easy to understand. You didn't take up the whole video with unnecessary talk . I learned this song watching this video 3 times.. thanks for the video.
Awesome, Keith! Thanks for sharing so enthusiastically your deep knowledge of Steely Dan. A real pleasure to read everyone's grateful comments on your efforts.
This is a super relaxed AND precise lesson on that beautiful classic! Very well done! As it seems to come so naturally to you, you don't dwell very long on the rhythm here, so we still have to listen carefully...
Thank you so much for breaking down this great tune, Keith. Have loved this song for 30 years, especially that great solo in the middle, but am not gonna go there. (Try and learn it) I know my limitations. Maybe one for a year or two down the road, when I'm better than I am now. Greetings and best wishes from Belfast, N Ireland, guitar bro. Hope you have a great summer You know your stuff, and like the contributor below says, you're v good at putting it across.
Thanks for the wonderful lesson, sorry I'm ten years too late ( story of my life!! ) Still better late than never! , I watched The Great Dean Parks explain his acoustic parts played over the original recording. Thanks again. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
Really great job. You made it harder than it’s needs to be with that pinky on the 4th fret. Works fine with e sus 2. Loved the bridge. Sneaking an A before the ASus2 at “you could have a change of heart” gets you the hook riff from the record. Still terrific stuff thanks.
good job, Keith! I just saw them April 14th 2017 in Las Vegas. Mesmerizing Live! I figured out the chords, but had to come here to get that Dominant 7 lick before the chorus. you are a good teacher, all the best!
Becker/Fagen once remarked comically/sarcastically in an interview that people seemed to think they invented jazz chords. Well to me they made inventive melodies on top of creative jazzy/Latin grooves. No one else in rock really wrote with that level of sophistication. For much of country/rock, simplicity was charming but not as adventurous sonically. Where they got their aesthetic is a mystery but putting jazzy chords in melodic pop had to have really begun with the Beatles and Beach Boys some times. The ability to take interesting jazzy chords and pluck a catchy melody was pure genius on the part of Fagen.
Ok, so I've been playing it wrong for about 30 years. Thanks very much, you have so much patience, great instruction, I really have it nailed now. Still can't sing it very well though..............
well, that was delightful! I listen to "Rikki" a couple of times a day, almost daily...been loving it since it was first sung by SD. Have you heard the group Venice sing it? Kipp Lennon is the lead vocalist and Skunk Baxter solos on guitar.
thanks..this is an excellent lesson clear and concise..I would suggest...and this is in no way a complaint...but if you played the song thru at the end...put it all together it would be great. Thanks so much for your effort and patience in teaching!!
Dude! Thank you! 9 years later.
Guys like you literally make the world a better place.

Well said Randy. The kid deserves a medal.
Great Lesson! Beautiful guitar by the way. I like how you show what it will sound like before breaking down the riffs. Thank you!

I too am a Steely Dan kid. It'll never get old.

Fantastic lesson! Steely Dan is as challenging as they come with their intricate guitar work. Many thanks for breaking down this great tune.

Awesome video Keith! You break it down in a simple, clear way and are so humble in your approach. Thanks a bunch!

Same story here!
Steely Dan would of used many different inversions and layers to make it sound like what it is.
the famous riff in this song was either donated by Satan or composed by a psychopath!
Mr. This brings back memories, wonderful memories as a kid growing up.and yes i remember that NBC Commercial. Thank you for your time and efforts

Excellent lesson (and, you’re very talented!). Thanks for posting.
Thanks. Great help in figuring out this song. I think the second note in the "funky lick" before the chorus should be an E flat though.
E flat is a B right?
Excellent mate great playing
