which answers the question of 'will you still feed me?' although by the time you see this you'll be at least 65...time's funny like that...naaaaaah...the mail's gotten slow...i hear it got sick... let's wish it a speedy recovery...and, as far as YOUR recovery, mr steely dan man with the effed up hand...i would advise turmeric/curcuma...known for its anti inflammatory properties... included in many indian dishes...you can buy it powdered or in capsules...for what it's worth, amongst other things, i'm a retired nurse...it's a shame more people don't know about herbal type remedies...good health to ya...and to you and yours, mr eller...
So glad you use actual terms to name the chords .It makes for clear communication.Every musician should take the time to learn these terms and apply them it makes life so much better .
The chording in this song, and practically every other Steely Dan song, is BRILLIANT. Donald Fagen's songwriting talent and mastery of chord choices that sound great and drive a song forward is unparallelled.
Amazing to witness guitar lessons that are precise, catch the nuances of the tune and are taught at a perfect mellow pace. Ben takes a challenging song (to many of us) and breaks it down beautifully. Perfect lesson! Thanks!
I have broken into the world of playing Steely Dan, and this video led me down the path, held my hand and showed me the way... Thank you so much for your simple and very well explained lesson on playing this gem! I did alter a couple of the chord fingerings due to arthritis, but now I can hit them without screaming.
Such amazingly great tunes! Nice suggestions, I like “Black Cow” and “Kid Charlemagne” too! Larry Carlton’s solo on Kid Charlemagne is so freaking cool sounding!
Awesome Ben , thanks for keeping it simple and clear without all the extra commentary on notes and fingering , but showing the grips instead , fuckin all that’s needed …thanks bro😊
I've watched a lot of guitar channels and subscribed to a few, but no-one beats Uncle Ben for pure joy of playing and music theory, and outstanding enterntainment value. Of my many favourite bits where Mr. Eller attached adjectives to chords, his choice at 16:29 takes the cake. Live long and prosper, Uncle Ben.
Thanks Ben. Very clear and concise explanation to this great tune. I wish more lessons could be as understanding and patient as yours is. Keep up the good work.
It is Walter who played the solo w L.C. playing the rhythm. Thank you Ben for simplifying this killer tune! And yes please do the solo if you haven’t already.
Nicely done, Thanks for the time in getting this out there. Steely Dan and Larry Carlton are lifelong lessons in guitar theory and challenging crazy good chords🎸
Another great lesson, Uncle Ben. Every time I watch you play I'm just amazed by how clean your playing is. Sounds crystal clear and laser precise! #goals
Ben, Very well explained. Gotta love that spicy stuff. Perfect definition of the magical chords. Totally dope. You are Very knowledgeable of the entire fretboard and my hats off to you. I am super excited that i tuned in and look forward to more breakdowns. keep up the great work. Can't wait to apply the spicy meatball to my own stuff. Thanks!!!!
You roll through this classic as if I’m your student. I may have to work on it for days, but you have laid it out to at least help this student (me) go back and work through the rough spots. Thank you!
Great stuff. I started with rock and transitioned via blues to jazz, but Steely Dan always used voicings that none of them normally use. I never managed to figure out all the voicings to my satisfaction. Now I can add another song to my repertoire. Thank you.
How you worked this out is light years away from what I will ever reach. I will so enjoy trying this for the next whatever time it takes . Thanks truly appreciate you teaching this .
I spent a few hours clicking on the play button behind Uncle Ben, broke my tele neck, trashed my Mac, set fire to the neighbours, then realised my error & had a jolly good laugh about it all over tea... excellent lesson Ben, another fave Steely Dan toon, Fanks!
I haven’t watched tour channel in a while. I love all of the shred metal stuff, being a child of the 80’s…….but. I have always been a HUGE Becker and Fagen fan!!!! I really love your Steely Dan video’s! Thanks!
Great job! You are thorough with no unnecessary talking. I knew some of this song, but you saved me a lot of time making sure I play the right chords. I know Peg so a couple of the chords in José I learned just to play Peg, so you taught me this song in 1 hour. Thanks!
One can appreciate ( marvel even ) at your obvious knowledge of music, playing ability and that rare ability to effectively teach this golden information. Thank you so much ! ! ! Cheers !
Great tutorial. You are well spoken, articulate, calm , and easy to follow. I have loved this song since the late 70's. Thank you so much Ben. I am going to check out some more of your lessons.
Fantastic work Ben. I'm sitting in an urgent care exam room waiting to get rid of the earwax stuffed in my left ear and listen to you explain why I never bothered to figure out how to play Steely Dan songs. The songwriting is so amazingly intricate with chords few rock acts dare to even try. It will take me weeks to master this song, but it will be fun to try considering most songs are G Em C D. Thanks. You and Beato are a joy to watch
Listen to what this man says @ 2:13 to 2:35 = some of the "Best Advice on You Tube" for Improving your guitar playing. Fantastic job. This was a phenomenal lesson. oNe LovE from NYC
Hey Ben - awesome lesson. I (try) to play Steely Dan songs on three different instruments - I'm best at piano, but LOVE playing bass, and have played guitar now for 30 years. I especially appreciate that you mention other ways of playing the single notes as well as some of the chord phrasings. Also, I'm glad it's not just me that has trouble picking out the guitar tracks from the keys in the original recording mix. And, your fretting is also very good. :) I've never seen one of your videos before so I subscribed!
I like how those two chords at the end of the intro are like the same shape, but rotated 180s and moved a fret upward. I tend to think of fingerings on the fretboard like constellations or compound geometric figures to help me remember them, and when I realized it was the same one but inverted it helped a lot
Pretty sure it was Dean Parks who played on Josie - no? Just watched another YT video on the Vertex Effects Channel where Mr. Parks was interviewed for a delightful 45 minutes. I don't play guitar but I enjoyed every minute of this video too. Great cord breakdown on this classic song.
Hi Ben, thanks for sharing your chord voicings on this tune! This is one of my favorite SD tunes to play and sing. I've been playing the modified songbook versions all along, but I love and will learn your great-sounding voicings from the Em7 vamp all the way to the bridge and chorus. I also look forward to learning other cool tunes on your channel. 🙏🏼
Sounds great. You nailed it- you come very close and better then me. Honestly, I bet even these guys will play it a little differently each time. Also, I think many will omit some of the bass notes and leave that to the bass player. Bottom line, as my Berklee instructor use to say- there are no rules in Rock N Roll. You captured most of it. Even my instructor did not worry about playing note for note.
I learned that steely dan chord,as just another voiceing of a major 9.lots of these extended chords leave out a 3rd or 5th it seems.you explain this really well.might actually be able to learn this.thank you
Ben, you're a very detailed, thorough, witty, knowledgeable and charming teacher. You make this extremely interesting! Thanks so much! I subscribed and will tune in to your other videos for sure. Continued success.
Just a fantastic lesson and what absolutely brilliant chord progressions. You’re a clever guy. This will take me a month to learn but what fun I’m going to have. Thank you.
You're an awesome teacher man! I do appreciate you mentioning that the original recording's guitar parts were simpler because it's true. When I first heard you playing the full Em7 voicing I was a little thrown. The beauty of a lot of Steely Dan's guitar harmony is how effective they were with simple major and minor triads, often over different root notes for an added surprise. Cheers \m/
In the intro I think it’s easier to play the whole f#7#9 bar chord and only play the 4 strings you do. It makes the transition to the D maj 9 (D/G) easier to grab. Great job on this!
You and Justin are my 2 favorite teachers on UA-cam. You both have a great signal/noise ratio. Heck yeah, go into the solo riffs. Also, more Zappa! Zomby Woof solo please.
Great video! I've played since I was 17, (off and on, more off than on) now 58. I've attempted these songs before but gave up in frustration. Great content and you break it down well. I'm not a theory nut, I'm more a shape nut. If a shape sounds good , I'll roll with it. This would be a hip song to pay live. And the bass player gets to have fun. As is the case of most Steely Dan songs. Syncopated bass.
I've been wondering about this song since I was 22! I'm 64 now!
Excellent lesson!
Thanks a million!
which answers the question of 'will you still feed me?' although by the time you see this you'll be at least 65...time's funny like that...naaaaaah...the mail's gotten slow...i hear it got sick... let's wish it a speedy recovery...and, as far as YOUR recovery, mr steely dan man with the effed up hand...i would advise turmeric/curcuma...known for its anti inflammatory properties... included in many indian dishes...you can buy it powdered or in capsules...for what it's worth, amongst other things, i'm a retired nurse...it's a shame more people don't know about herbal type remedies...good health to ya...and to you and yours, mr eller...
Me too! But now you're 66.
A Great Life Mystery Revealed! Thanks Ben: I'm 71, Vernon!
Yeah lm 53 life flew by didnt it
same here, wondering since Josie released ... I'm 83 and after 5 day now playing Josie! Whoda thunk :) all thanks to Ben
So glad you use actual terms to name the chords .It makes for clear communication.Every musician should take the time to learn these terms and apply them it makes life so much better .

One of your talents is, DEFINITELY, teaching. Seems to come very natural to you. Thank’s for the video.
Chris P thank you!!!
Excellent, sir! Steely Dan is very complex...and just awesome music. Thanks for your time on the vid, man.
I have broken into the world of playing Steely Dan, and this video led me down the path, held my hand and showed me the way... Thank you so much for your simple and very well explained lesson on playing this gem! I did alter a couple of the chord fingerings due to arthritis, but now I can hit them without screaming.
yeah...let the instrument do the screaming for ya...
The pace of your lessons is so perfect and you communicate brilliantly. Thank you.
"Deacon Blues"!!!! "FM"!! "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" "Do it Again" "Hey Nineteen" "Reelin' in the Years" "Black Friday"
Agree!!
Such amazingly great tunes! Nice suggestions, I like “Black Cow” and “Kid Charlemagne” too! Larry Carlton’s solo on Kid Charlemagne is so freaking cool sounding!
++Black Friday would be awesome++
Great lesson! Green Earrings if possible please
Awesome Ben , thanks for keeping it simple and clear without all the extra commentary on notes and fingering , but showing the grips instead , fuckin all that’s needed …thanks bro😊
Made me so happy to be able to play the first few phrases of the intro, then those chords!
"There's a reason why your mom's super cool boyfriend thinks that Steely Dan is so freaking awesome."
Classic Uncle Ben.
Here! Here!
Played this song in my high school jazz band it’s a lot of fun
Dude! This us the first video of yours I've come across but you're dope! Thank you for this.
Thanks a lot! There’s tons of other videos here for ya, including a bunch of other Steely tunes!
Once you get the hang of it, this song feels so great to play. Smooth; like slicing through butter!
Great lesson!
Great job Ben! Your teaching is so smooth. Thanks for doing this great song. There's lots we can learn from Steely Dan. True masters of their craft.
Good relative pitch ear training on this one... Holy cow... Just about every type of alphabet chord soup in this song.
Cool lesson, Ben! Clearly-explained and good chord/fret diagrams. Looking forward to more lessons around this skill level.
Thanks Ben. Very clear and concise explanation to this great tune. I wish more lessons could be as understanding and patient as yours is. Keep up the good work.
2 years later and i'm still jamming on this song. please please please do more Steely Dan stuff Ben!! :)
It was Walter’s solo. Classic Steely Eyed Dan. Thank you Uncle. Now let’s talk solo
It is Walter who played the solo w L.C. playing the rhythm. Thank you Ben for simplifying this killer tune! And yes please do the solo if you haven’t already.
I think Dean Parks played the intro and rhythm.
Hell yeah, I can’t believe I’m only just now seeing this!
You are the man Ben Eller!
Nicely done, Thanks for the time in getting this out there. Steely Dan and Larry Carlton are lifelong lessons in guitar theory and challenging crazy good chords🎸
Great lesson. What a chord workout. Steely Dan knew how to write them tunes.
Yeah, it's on from the start with this one for guitar. Probably the best Steely Dan song for guitar IMHO. Great job! Thanks!
Another great lesson, Uncle Ben. Every time I watch you play I'm just amazed by how clean your playing is. Sounds crystal clear and laser precise! #goals
Can't do the "Uncle Ben" thing. I might have dated one of his mom or dad's cousins, at my age, you just never know. It seems rude for me to do that.
Thanks!!!!
We’d like to see to Josie solo ! Got the rest of the song down thanks to you. Standing by…thanks Ben.
You roll through this classic as if I’m your student. I may have to work on it for days, but you have laid it out to at least help this student (me) go back and work through the rough spots. Thank you!

Steely Dan - Jazz that you can listen to. Jazz Rock that you can groove to. So many great songs!
I vote for "Night by Night" from Pretzel Logic next -or- Deacon Blues from Aja.
Really went all out on this one! Thanks for giving me so many new chords to mess around with :)
Finally gave in and learned this thru you instead by ear. I feel the universe opened up.
Thanks!

You're a very good teacher. Thanks for this!
This was really helpful. Thanks! I hear the "girls say when" chords in a lower register, using the same voicings as the first bit.
Oh, also, I think the chord at 14:37 should be M7, not m7 since you're playing the Major 3rd with your index finger. (Oops, you corrected it at 17:10)
Like Vernon below I’ve been trying to figure out Josie by ear on and off for years - Your lesson filled in the holes. Great teaching! Thanks!
This is a killer Steely Dan song, thanks so much for breaking it down! Absolutely timeless🤟
Fantastic work Ben. I'm sitting in an urgent care exam room waiting to get rid of the earwax stuffed in my left ear and listen to you explain why I never bothered to figure out how to play Steely Dan songs. Ben. You are awesome. Great explanation and pace to the lesson. Love Steely Dan things and you are spot on with these. Much appreciated man!
Excellent break down and sounds deadly accurate to my ears ! And Ive been listening to this song regularly for 45 years
Listen to what this man says @ 2:13 to 2:35 = some of the "Best Advice on You Tube" for Improving your guitar playing. Fantastic job. This was a phenomenal lesson. oNe LovE from NYC
Very nice vid Ben! Thank you so much for the breakdown and explanations of different voicings. 10/10

This is great Uncle Ben, thanks so much. If I keep improving with your lessons people will start doubting my step-dad status.
Really attractive axe dude! Sweet lesson too! Bravo Ben!
I don't even play guitar, always found steey dan guitar work. Very pleasing to listen to.
We gonna break out the hats and hooters.
Thanks Ben ... amazing instruction ... I'm 83 and now can play Josie ... party time! (Socrates would love you)
I never play stuff like this, so this is great to learn. HOLY CRAP those intro chords threw me for a loop.
Great lesson! I appreciate the graphics!
Great tutorial for a great song! great job at explaining what you are doing with both of your hands including finger placement. Thanks!

Ben, you're a very detailed, thorough, witty, knowledgeable and charming teacher. You make this extremely interesting! Thanks so much! I subscribed and will tune in to your other videos for sure. Continued success.
Finally making some progress. Thanks so much for identifying the chords. It helps a lot with memorizing.
I WANT THE SOLO! PLEASE! This song is such a joyful colourful fun song! Thanks man! I really appreciate it!
Really good stuff, the way you put it over is very easy to follow - awesome. Thank you.
Just a fantastic lesson and what absolutely brilliant chord progressions. You’re a clever guy. This will take me a month to learn but what fun I’m going to have. Thank you.
Ben....you've just saved me a good few ours of pain. Many thanks.
Trés trés trés heureux de vous avoir trouvé,des explications claires et un brin de nostalgie ..........THANKS

Ben, outstanding Lesson here. You make it so easy! I will check into your other " Dan" Lessons as well!
Very well done! I've always loved this song, but never got very far in trying to learn all these difficult, but amazing chords. Thank you so much!
brother your teaching methods are awesome love it
Thanks, Lisa!
Excellent lesson bro! Finally got it. Needs brushing up but you made it super clear!! Thanks 👍🏽
Ben you have to do Aja! Lol my wife was named after this song so I HAVE to learn it. She hates when I put that song on so if I could play it 🤔.
In the intro I think it’s easier to play the whole f#7#9 bar chord and only play the 4 strings you do. It makes the transition to the D maj 9 (D/G) easier to grab. Great job on this!

Uncle Ben and Steely? Instant click
Incredible lesson Ben. There are so many tasty chords in that song and you have down cold. Thanks for makingbthe video. Cheers!
Goddamnit! your little finger is the length of my middle finger! this is hard!
One of my favourite songs - fantastic instruction - Thanks Ben!
Excellent explanation and perfect breakdown. You are a great teacher. Thank you
Great job Uncle Ben!!!! Love Steely Dan. Love the chords, very cool, like you. Cheers
