LOL that's so cool MacGyver like. Now I was told by my propane company that I couldn't run my furnace off a 20lb tank that the pressure regulator valve would freeze. But I see you're not having any problems with it. Good Job.
The general rule with gas valves is you don't fix them; you replace them. I understand you made a temporary repair until you get the new part; you also said you wanted to keep the place warm when you go away; so you must have a safe operating furnace and regulator. You don't want to cause harm to your family or property; do not tell others less capable than you who may get in serious problems.
He did say (just after 11:00) that they had a new valve on order and that this was just a temporary way to supply heat. So hopefully everyone watches the video to the end.
Two things: I like the toilet hose connection and the black pipe label saying, " Warning - Valve converted for use on LP gas. Improper operation could result in death or serious injury." I like it because it reminds me of a "make it work no matter what" and a "make it happen now" attitude.
Mike, you’re the Evel Knievel of innovators . It seems like every time I watch your videos, you’re doing something sketchy or downright dangerous. I am envious of your knowledge of so many things, but worry for your safety. I knew a guy that got very sick from carbon monoxide. Please be cautious, I’d like to watch many more years of your progress 😱👍
First time I watch this fella Mike and I'm scared to death; propane is a high pressure gas which is also heavier than natural gas. Folks who aren't familiar as you are could create a bad situation all around!
⚠️WARNING: Firstly, thank you. I can see where this might help me get through the night in an emergency. The problem, unless I am mistaken, is the gas valve is like a switch. It turns off the gas in emergencies. Ex. The little sensor that looks like a diode on the right side will send a signal to the valve if the flame gets too big. There piece of metal that is in front of the flame (thermocouple) shuts down gas if the pilot goes out. That's just 2 ways you can now make it go Boom. Lastly, there is no adjustable regulator on natural gas systems and you may get a fireball trying this on those systems. Good luck.
$100 gets you a new gas valve that operates safely. The water line used to conduit gas to the valve is problematic. Manually feeding gas to the main burners is a disaster waiting to happen. I've been rehabbing buildings since 1983 and have taken a few shortcuts myself. But screwing around with a gas valve and supply lines is off the charts crazy. I'll look for his / their name in the obituary section.
Nice job! Hopfully it stays nice and toasty in there. We just got our heating system in two weeks ago and it is really nice! We opted for a mini split system just because I wanted the least amount of propane appliances as possible. We're still learning the nuances of the system but it's nice to wake up and not be freezing cold.
I am glad that things come along very well , here in Monterrey we don't have snow in winter, we are 2 hours north drive from Laredo, Texas, yes very close from USA, we wish you Marry Christmas and a very Happy New Year, saludos desde Mexico.
One Thing against safety codes to run gas flex connector or water connector pipe lol thur the furnace cabinet & just extend hard gas Pipe to exit Furnace cabinet & get ya an 2-3' gas flex connector
Do you know how to check the heat exchanger for leaks? That is a very old heater to not have any thermal cracks. Small cracks in the heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide. My furnace looked good until it was removed and given a thorough inspection when repairing the A/C. When it is dark, shine a light in the flame area and look for light leaking out. Did you clean the flame detector? It is a wire that measures ionized air from a flame and prevents gas from flowing when the flame is out. There are plenty of UA-cams showing how to use emery cloth to clean the flame detector. If it is slightly corroded, it will stop the gas valve from opening. Always use BLACK iron pipe for propane, never galvanized iron pipe for propane.
I also noticed he went from single wall pipe to double wall; he also needs to have a slight upward pitch on that outgoing pipe for proper fumes flow! I wouldn't live within 2 thousand feet from Mike's place...!
A SS 1/2” FIP connected to an LP gas valve is quite possibly one of the quickest ways to create a hazard that threatens your family. Do not do this. Black iron pipe into the valve and if you would like, beyond that, you can use a rated corrugated stainless steel supply into the drip leg and union assembly. Monday morning Quarterbacking… YES. Serious injuries could ensue.
Careful not to crack the heat exchanger with variable unregulated gas pressure. The gas valve is also a pressure regulator and even after installing a replacement, the pressure should be calibrated with a manometer. Its a simple inexpensive calibration that can save 1000s of dollars since if neglected can destroy your furnace due to overheating!
Mike, I know this is a temporary, supplemental thing right now, but I've got some concerns. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like some of your vent piping is single wall pipe, it all needs to be double wall pipe. You risk carbon monoxide poisoning using single wall pipe. For your gas line, galvanized fittings are always a no-no, you should be using black pipe and fittings. And for the flexible line, please get a proper flexible gas line, I would not expect that toilet line to last very long. I'd also highly recommend using dish detergent and water solution to check all gas connection (and the reworked valve) You may have done that, but I don't see it in the video. Lastly, I'd highly recommend a carbon monoxide detector in the shop.
Mike removed the internal valves & just made the entire valve a section of pipe, thus bypassing every safety feature of the unit. People go to jail for doing this kinda stuff, after someone dies.
Yup, she just free flows with the crack of a valve. No sure how CO will leak through single wall? Same setup as the old house. The double wall is for through the wall purposes. It’s all temporary.
@Supa Trending Daily Most building codes also call for double wall pipe any place that is within reach, so that no one burns themselves on a hot vent pipe. But considering everything else going on in this video, that is the least of his worries.
PIZZA!!!!! On a side note, nice job on the backwoods engineering to get it up and running until the parts come in. It's that kinda thinking that will get you out of a stuck spot when there's nothing else you can do. :)
We never researched it. We did compare both rubber hoses side by side. (propane line that wouldn't work vs water line that would) That's all they were, rubber hoses.
@@LaidBackLiving I wonder if there is a difference between the rubber used in the hoses, something that propane would react differently with. I'll have to look into it. :)
@@LaidBackLiving Talked to my propane friend, he said the propane will eat the water line rubber hose. Propane lines are made from a different kind of rubber. :)
Hey guys. Love the channel & have been with you from pretty close to the start, but this one is a bit much. Looks like the thing done right was the LPG conversion, and I will just stop there!
That's not a toilet supply hose. They are 7/8. You are using a 1/2" flexible supply line. Be careful someone might want a drink and unscrew that braided stainless steel supply line looking for water and accidentally set themselves on fire!
@@LaidBackLiving this is like our generator disconnect, we know that we have to turn off the main breaker to run the generator, we didn't need a little peice of metal to tell us that. You know that the window stays closed when the heat is on!! Nice job!
You shouldn't be sharing this because that's not the way to hook up a furnace. That Regulator with the Red knob, what is the pressure rating ? You only need 1/2 pound of gas pressure to operate that unit and remember that the control valve isn't designed for more than 2 psi. Be careful with your "fixes" don't learn things the hard way.
First thing to check is the condition of the heat exchanger; if the furnace is very old and out of warranty the exchanger will cost as much as a new furnace!
Shouldn't you use a bigger propane tank with a higher psi pressure regulator for a furnace and proper gas lines?? Just wondering, I'm a paranoid female around propane with carbon dioxide poisoning!!
You meant CO or carbon monoxide poisoning. A large concentration can kill a person or a family in less than ONE HOUR; think about it. My dentist lost six relatives from CO the very night they had installed a new furnace. The exhaust piping had a long run to the top of the roof of a two story home. The cold temps caused the CO to condense and run down to the basement. Big lawsuit for the installing HVAC company. Inexperienced installers for sure.
Wtf dont ever bypass a gas valve. If the heater overheats this is incredibly dangerous. Hes risking burning down the house. Then you cant use a water line instead of a gas line. This guy is asking for trouble. Do not follow this horrible advice of this video.

That's a little too sketchy for me. I think for piece of mind I'm just going to replace it. I cringe when the guy says "It should be fine". Propane is no joke, you have electrical wires mixed with highly flammable gas and that's a recipe for a life changing disaster. I would caution ANYONE who is NOT a PROFESSIONAL to stop watching this video and go call a Pro! It's just not worth your life.
First of all, you didn't fix the gas valve, but rather, by passed it's safety system. Hopefully you won't burn your ouse down if the ga stays ignited and the blower and inducer motor fail. I was hoping to actually fix my stuck valve, I would never do what you suggest. Obviously keeping an eye on it would prevent a disaster, but what if someone walsk out of the room and the blower goes off and you have a thermal meltdown. Take care, you'll probably be okay for a short term heat solution.
A flamethrower, a rocket, and a pipe dope painting all in one.
You need to replace the water service line with one rated for propane. Propane may go through the type of plastic lining used in a flex-water-line.
You need to use black pipe for gas line inside of gas furnace, you can not use water line for gas it is very dangerous
I do believe this is true. My people tell me propane eats away the inside of the pipe so must use black...but for natural gas you can use both :)
@Ronaldinho Gaucho correct any sort of flexible pipe for gas should never enter the unit itself
