I've always had bad luck when whistling. It invariably reveals my secret that I am a terrible whistler.
Dob't worry. Be a happy whistler.
Hahaha!!!
I laughed
Can confirm. US Sailor for 12 years. Your shipmates will give you a death stare if you whistle aboard ship. And if you don't stop, someone will stop you.
>someone will stop you
Neptune
It's all the people that can't keep key that'll get you sunk. Pisses the sirens right off 😂
Why did that last sentence sound ominous than it should be
Which is religion-level stupid bullshit and was pretty much explained in the video. A leftover from the age of sail. There was this thing before about women on-board. Where's that nowadays, huh? And what if you get a trans-woman on-board? Where did THAT go?
I was introduced to that superstition by an old Chief, on my very first cruise. Fresh out of A School, a brand new Hull Tech, I was cleaning & stowing DC gear after a drill. I was quietly whistling to myself, until I heard, "Shipmate!" from behind me. This Chief then preceeded to dress me down for whistling aboard ship.
I have a fascinating addendum to this. I went to (and still am) in school for theater. Theater practitioners are notorious for their superstitions (Don't say Macbeth in a theater, don't walk under a ladder, etc) but one of those was also "Do not whistle on stage." I was taught that this stemmed from the early days of theater. Early stage hands in the more modern and complex theaters were sailors in port. The rigging and fly lines were run by these sailors, particularly due to their knowledge and skills at rigging on ships, and as such, they would use whistles commands to adjust the rigging accordingly. Whistling was forbidden outside of this context for fear that a whistle could cause a piece of scenery to suddenly, and dangerously, change.
Oh damn I bet that checks out
In our darkest time of need, when all hope was fading, Maritime Horrors returns to brighten our lives again! Lets go!!!! We missed you!
Yes.👍.
So true my friend.
Yes
Swedish navy here. We don’t whistle onboard with one exception: the ships cook should whistle if peeling shrimp or strawberries so you know he/she is not eating them. Mostly harmless fun and a tradition, but it still hold true, at least in our navy.
Haha, that's pretty good.
lol. Whistling with your mouth is bad on ships, but whistling through a metal whistle is totally fine. The sea understands metal whistles and does NOT feel challenged by them 😂
Underrated comment
That kind of smartass attitude, questioning the wisdom of superstition will get you on double duty scrubbing the deck for the rest of the trip on my ship.*
* i dont have a ship
@@fsmourasorry Captain. We will get that deck scrubbed.
*not a sailor
**scared of water when I can't see the bottom
A little early but I hear it's bad luck to whistle aboard a ship. You'd be challenging the wind and a storm will follow. Unless you're the ship's cook then you can whistle cuz it means the food it good. That's what I've heard but I can't wait to see the video and see if I can learn of other perspectives!
It seems like someone just said this stuff one day and it just continued
You only had to wait three minutes lol
This is the video I’ve been waiting for. I learned that whistling on a ship is a bad thing when I did it during my shiphandling class.
He’s back! I feared you had bananas on board and met a horrible fate
Many years ago, I was visiting the Museum of Garden History in London. William Bly’s tomb is located in the back garden. To botanists, he was a hero, because of all the foreign plants he brought back to England.
We've missed you! I hope all is well with you and those you care about. Fair winds and following seas, sir!
Never thought there'd be a practical aspect to this superstition. Good to know.
The long wait is nearly over. Give praise to whichever deity you worship. In this case, Ulmo, Lord of the Waters is my chosen deity of the day.
😂😂😂❤😂😂😂
R'amen, brother!
@@relwalretepThanks. Ulmo was a mighty messenger for the Valar.
WOOOO!!!!!
WOOOO!!!!!
General quarters, general quarters!
All hands, man your watching stations.
We've got a new Maritime Horrors video to watch!
Just in time for Halloween, "Spooky Boat Man" cometh 😂
Yes! It’s been so long without the Captain at the helm.
As someone who is still in school and plans to become a sailor I love this series and cannot wait for more.
As someone who whistles Christmas carols year-round, I would be doubly unwelcome on board a ship!
There's a special place in heck for people of your kind. ;)
@@chucklebutt4470 Yes, there's a roped-off section of Heaven where only Christmas Carol Whistlers reside! 😊
And he's back !! Wil we ever see the Creepster again I wonder
Shall be working during the release of the video, super looking forward to catching up during my break. Glad to hear you're still productive, hope your qualifications came through!
Glad you're back! Was getting a little worried
Was introduced while volunteering on board the Brig Niagara sailing late at night on Erie. "Too many ghost ships 'round these parts" I was told.
Welcome back.
🇺🇸🌎👍❤
I ❤ sailors.
I've heard basically the same myth regarding Tommyknockers. The miners were told whistling would make them angry and they'd cause a cave-in. When actually, it was to avoid having their whistles confused with the canaries which they used to detect poison gasses.
On my first trip at sea on a fishing ship, i started whistling on the deck because there was no fish and i was bored. The oldest deckhand onboard screamed at me to not whistle or we would get a storm our way. 2 days later, we were in a 25-30 m/s storm. I have never whistled on a ship since
HE RETURNS, ALL HAIL OUR LORD
🙏
For God's sake.🙏.
Don't worry. Be happy.
He’s back!
Glad to hear from you Boats!
Babe wake up it's a new Maritime Horrors vid !!!
Thank you for uploading! We LOVE your content. Fair weather and following seas!
This superstition carried over to another profession where workers are high in the rigging working with ropes and weights- the theatre! Whistling in the theatre is bad luck too, and often associated with falls or items being dropped from the rafters.
I got quite a beasting when i was newly on-board for whistling, learned all about this superstition 😂
Glad to see you back, captain
There was one exception to those who were allowed to whistle.
At least, on HMS Victory there was; and that was the ship's cook whilst he was working.
You can't whistle with food in your mouth, so to hear the cook whistling at least meant he wasn't sneaking in any extra rations.
I mean, the theories presented are interesting folklore. but, imo, there is a more simple & plausible origin of this superstition: constant whistling is annoying AF (especially at higher pitches) the "bad luck" could certainly be that one crewman whistling all of the time could drive one of their crewmates mad enough to toss them overboard.
I just truly cannot whistle at all. All my life I've had people try to teach me but to no avail.
Woohoo. Been a while. Great video. I don’t think i could go 15 minutes without whistling.
So glad to see you back, even if it happens to bejust a brief return.
Can’t wait to get coastal skipper.
He is alive!
It is alive!🙏.
In Treasure Planet, Silver signals his mutiny with a whistle.
There he is! Been wondering where he’d gotten to. Glad to see some new content.
Hope all was well at sea my friend. Welcome back to dry land
In my country, it's a widespread superstition that whistling inside buildings will lead to them burning down.
Where is this
Yah! You’re back! My guess is you sail the St Lawrence?
Whistling was really bad. Luck for me. I was sneaking past this dude while whistling and he caught me. Bad luck indeed
Been missing you. Looking to more said this old 73 year old great granny/ Be safe
Let’s gooooo the GOAT returns !!!
I was told that it was not allowed. I was a US Marine and the sailors always told us it was banned while on board
Yes. The wonderful channel is alive.
Allah bless all.
We ❤ this channel.
Aww, from your workload it sounds like The Creepster will be AWOL again for Halloween.
i dont know why im so surprised that the owner of a ship channel works on a ship, but it is cool to hear nonetheless! i really enjoyed this short, fun-fact video because i didn't understand until recently just how superstitious sailors, historically, have been. stay safe, smooth sailing B)
I sailed on a boat for about 2 weeks going down the Coast of the eastern United States in the Atlantic to the U.S. Vergin Islands. It was a student program. There was an Engineer on board that helped with the boats engine, power and water system. He was a very nice person but he was kind of superstitious about whistling, a lot of the older people on board were superstitious about something. I asked him about it one day and he gave me the regular response of "It was bad luck, Invites bad weather." Then afterwards followed up with " It's also just annoying to hear 24/7." and I think that this is more of the reason why it wasn't excepted, people just thought it was annoying and it was fun to talk about superstition. I ended up whistling when he wasn't around when I was on watch late at night. It was a fun experience.
Welcome back Skipper!
I admit, I clicked on this mainly because of the Smudge the cat art work. LOL
I just started rereading _Nepune's Inferno,"_ an account of the US Navy's role during the Guadalcanal campaign by historian James Hornfischer. On page three or four he references the whistling superstition.
(If anyone likes WWII history books I highly recommend it. His writing style is superb, and he details the reasons, the actions, and what the Admirals, the commanders and the crewmen had to deal with.)
He's alive!
Welcome back, mate.
Never had any bad luck whistling. Keeps them lasses away.
He's back!
Welcome back salior
Glad to see a new upload. I do not work with ships, but find your videos very entertaining and informative. Fair winds and following seas!
Good to see you back, captain 🫡
One of my favorite channels, well done! Excellent content, well executed, much appreciated.
Woooooo Hoooooo! This channel is back, yay!
YAY! The Skipper is back!
Can't stand whistling, now I can scare the whistlers wahaha
I was wondering when you would upload again
HE'S BACK!!!
Glad you back!!!
HE'S ALIVE
YAAAAH! WELCOME BACK!
Glad to see you back, sir!
It has been a fair day to see this
4 months of checking has paid off
well well well, look who is back lmao , missed you buddy , loved the video , looking foward to the halloween video of the year
Welcome back
Thanks for the upload. I'm glad to hear that you're doing well, and I'm looking forward to future uploads.
I was aboard a cruise ship in 2013. I whistled to my wife to get her attention. She was rught next to me, so it was a pretty soft quiet whistle. The Captain was within a few feet if me as well. He quite sternly, but still somewhat politely told me to never whistle aboard a ship.
The ship was the Carnival Triumph. The next week the poop cruise happened. (which my cousin was actually on). Just don't let anyone know it was me and my whistling that caused it.
Looking forward to your upcoming content!
thanks for the upload I was wondering what happen to you. whatever you do don't whist to you get back.
I would imagine in the age of steam and mostly steel it may have persisted since one would want to listen for whistling noises; it could be a small amount of steam escaping somewhere. A problem which one wants to solve while it’s still a whistle and not a single thunderous roar
Love your videos, safe sailing!
I ❤ only myself.
Here to support this channel because I love your videos
Glad to have a new upload, looking forward to more. Hope your adventures at sea are safe and fulfilling. As always, thanks for the content! We will all be here for the next video.
Dude, we've missed you
Yay you're alive :)
I fucking LOVE this channel
That makes two of us!
Please keep posting!
You're back !!!
Dang, im not disappointed, but 6 months for this?
it's good to see you back, MH :)
Yes.
Glad to see a new video! 🤩 Good to know! I also know it’s bad luck to whistle at night esp near the woods!😬
What a horror this video!
I am seaman retired and i NEVER saw a drunken sailor. I saw it only on Hollywood movies.
Good video thanks 👍
And Lo! He Hath returned from the Depths!
Halloween.
Wish I had seen this video before my mariner career. Got smacked by my first quartermaster for whistling and have obeyed her every order since
I suggest you do a video on "TUGS".
I can’t stop laughing at the covers for the superstitious sailor.
Whoever’s idea it was is a genius 😂
Fair wind!
He's alive!!
Love this channel.
I ❤ only myself.
