When I was a child, I remember how sore my hands got when removing the seeds from the giant sunflower heads. My parents always raised some fun things like popcorn, oodles of flowers, and giant sunflowers in the garden, along with all kinds of regular veggies. This year I grew 3 different varieties of sunflowers (all had short stocks), the kind you use for cut flowers. Squirrels have been chewing off the whole heads, I presumed they are eating them until I found one head half planted in a flowerpot, crazy little critters! ~Margie

I set aside coneflower seed heads in a flowerpot to plant them in my backyard later.
Probably 8 of them. The next day, I didn't think anything of the tipped over pot because we've had a lot of wind.
Dang if those critters (squirrels) didn't run off with the coneflowers... all but one I found discarded like Cinderella's glass slipper among my bagged leaves. We'll see if the seeds take next season.

Random: my granny always planted a small garden in front of the house every spring. One time I said let’s add sunflowers …. We didn’t know that they would tour over the other flowers 😂😂😂.
They were like 3/4 ft and the came back the next year 😂😂. It was a funny surprise.

Yes, amazing design by and amazing designer, the great I AM ( self existing one). I don't meant to chime in to make you feel ganged up on, picked on, or anything negative ! I just respectfully urge you/everyone to check into it ! Solid scientific research, even that done by honest scientists who were not at the time believers and some who still aren't yet, actually back up what the Bible says. And we see in the Bible that God created space, time and matter. Then, everything else, and all creatures and plants to "reproduce after their kind" . Many scientific discoveries were made because the researcher believed the Bible, such as the man who discovered/mapped the oceanic currents, after reading a reference to them in the Bible. At the very least, it's a super famous, long lasting, best selling book and the scientific stuff is definitely worth checking into, is fun and super interesting, so I hope everybody goes over to ICR.org to check out the content there and subscribe to their free magazine. Plenty of technical stuff but most of it is available in articles written for the layman.

I am gonna sound kinda nutty and dramatic but Laura, Aaron you have changed me. How I see things around me has changed. I never liked sunflowers...and I only thought there was one or two kinds. I had no idea what beauty there is in them. I would never have thought of feeding the wildlife, gathering seeds, or using for cut flowers. I could write a short novel on how you have opened my eyes and how thankful i am. Typing that last sentence has my eyes full of tears. Thank you . Maybe i need to write a letter and send as there is so much i would like to say. God Bless

Salted and roasted sunflower seeds are hugely popular as a snack in Greece. Give them a try Laura, they are addictive and absolutely free 😉 used to help my granny collect them at the end of the summer, we used a thick stick and would knock the back of the head to collect them, easy enough when they're properly dry.

And by the way..... i love vegetable gardening but you have really gotten me into all the other plants like trees and succulents. I live in the so cal mountains so many of the traditional Southern California gardening ways are much different for me when i get 3 feet of snow in one day but the next day can be 70 degrees. I found you originally learning about succulents and since failing and watching you i have now many survivors that flourish!! Thank you Aaron and Laura!, you are my inspiration that i can do this!!!!! Ps. So glad to see Aaron learning names and loving the garden more and more, you have me following indefinitely.

"Hey, I grew that. You should enjoy it." 🤣 So surprised at the inside of the head. It looked foamy. I've never seen that before so that was a real treat. I bought some seeds last year to plant out this year and never did. But this looks so fun, I'm going to start planning where to place them. Any tips? Are all sunflowers harvestable do you know? Or are some ornamental (thinking about your Suncredibles).
