  • This is a really sad scene where bertie breaks down in front of this mother as he has to take on a life long job that he simply was not prepared for, and his older brother abandons him and his young family to the mercy of the media and later the second world war.

Probably what made George VI such a good king is that he didn't want the job. Those who seek power make terrible leaders. Those who accept it reluctantly are always much better at it.

To see Bertie break down like that in front of his mother, it hammers down the sheer magnitude of the burden of the Crown that was thrown on him so suddenly. He proved to be the better King down the road, but at that point in time, he felt truly lost. Truly a somber and touching scene.

I have always thought that the infamous abdication speech of King Edward VIII was so self centered, so immature, that one feels terribly sad for poor "Berti" who went on, as history will tell, to be one of the greatest Kings the United Kingdom ever had, as he overcame his own personal challenges and led his peoples around the world through that terrible war and on to victory.

I have often thought that it was a blessing in disguise. David was a terrible king even in the short 11 months he was in the role, and even his prime minister Stanley Baldwin was appalled at the way David would return documents of state with red wine rings on them, or else didn't bother to sign them at all. Bertie turned out to be a great king and brought his daughter up in the same mould. The one flaw was the terrible toll it took on Bertie, which eventually killed him.

Honestly, Wallis Simpson probably saved not just the British monarchy, but countless lives in the subsequent WW2 as well as the Cold War. Edward's views on the Nazis is well known by this point, and he likely would have publicly pushed for a surrender to Germany after the fall of France, which would have consigned countless innocents to the wrath of the Nazis. And this would have made things very difficult for the Western Allies. Even if the Allies still won the war (the invasion of the USSR would likely still have ended disastrously) England was the launching point for D-Day. If England had surrendered, it would have been far more difficult for the US and other allies to make the Western front, meaning that the USSR likely would have swept through all of Europe and blanked it all under the Iron Curtain. And Edward VIII would have been seen as a Nazi collaborator, likely leading to a referendum that would have turned Britain into a Republic the same way that Italy's monarchy ended.

Sure I guess she saved people by existing. However, I highly doubt she had this in mind. She was recorded as being notoriously cruel towards people both outside and in the royal family. The first thing she demanded after the abdication was money despite the fortune long Edward III acquired before becoming king.

Operation Barbarossa would probably have still been just as costly, but I don’t know if it would be a disaster.
If there is no UK in the war, if there is no France, then Japan doesn’t need to attack pearl harbor on dec 7 1941.
Which means there is no African campaign, no Italian invasion. Rommel isn’t needed anywhere but the East, and that is a dangerous notion for the Russians.
All of the resources from areas taken by the Reich can no be solely directed east, a one front war.
After Stalin is killed and Russia falls, the Jews and Slavs are subjugated and worked to death. The US would probably be the last bastion for jews, but eventually with Germany left unchecked the US would have to give them up and accept Nazi suzerainty.
Norway, Finland,Sweden would have again been German puppet states and Sweden and Switzerland would not have been able to maintain neutrality and likely would also accept suzerainty.
      Hmmm
This could actually make for an incredibly interesting alternative history book based solely on the butterfly affect of a queen consort maggie.

Correct CW Simpson. Noel Coward is said to have stated there should be statues of Mrs Simpson, because she spared us the disaster of Edward VIII. Politician & biographer Roy Jenkins asserted: had Edward been king in 1940, Churchill might well have had to either imprison him, depose him, or both. It was VERY hard on George VI (and George seems to have made it worse by smoking). Still, Britain and those who needed her in WWII were far better off with George VI, who could be remembered as 'George the Great'.

Elizabeth would have become queen anyway, but not until much later in life. Assuming Edward VIII stayed on the thrown and married Simpson, and had no children, and died in 1972 as he did, she would have become queen then. Lots of what-ifs, but still likely. However, we now have the longest serving monarch in British history, and the 4th longest serving in world history (depending on how you define monarchy)...doing a job she didn’t want.

I own the film and watch it over and over. It would have made extraordinary fiction, but the fact it all really happened makes it even more compelling. Whenever people say the royal family is dull, I tell them in truth they are just the opposite. They have led remarkable lives packed with remarkable experiences and turns in the road. This film also reminds us of Queen Elizabeth II's singular childhood and equally singular parents.

Endless Darkness The Nazi King was King Edward VIII aka Duke of Windsor. He was the traitor that gave the Nazis intelligence to bomb Britain and Buckingham Palace. He thought if he did that then once Germany won the war he would be restored to the throne of England. One of the many reasons why he was made to abdicate the throne. The Wallis romance was just use as a diversion. King George VI (Bertie) led the country to win the war with support from the allies. He raise the morale of his country during the war to encourage people not to give up and continue to fight and support the cause.

Bertie and Elizabeth. It's a television film that was commissioned for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and it aired in 2002 two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. It focuses on the love story between Bertie and Elizabeth from their first meeting to Bertie's death in 1952.
