Volvo motor burning oil Repair!

  • Volvo are great vehicle's but unfortunately when Ford owned Volvo, they developed a Inline 5 cylinder that had ring issues due to low-tension. Vehicle has to under-go a oil consumption Step 1 test, Step 2 to verify if oil is burning. Performed cylinder bore inspection and rod bearings for scoring.
If all passes, you will need piston rings to be replaced. Here is a progressive video on my little engine 'rebuild'. Enjoy!

Great vid bud. You could have skipped out your mistake, but you didn't, that's a true mechanic 😊

While doing all the work you should've shimmed the block I don't know if cylinder wall cracking is really a thing with these more modern blocks but on slight older ones like the t5 R and others you want to do it.

I have a Volvo V40 2.0 5 cylinder petrol from 2013 with engine code B5204T8. Do you know of also these engines have this piston ring problems? I read that there was a recall in the US but this was for engine code B4204T09,10,11 etc.

@@E.T-s2d Yes. Won’t be a recall, it’s an extended Campaign. If oil filter housing / oil trap be updated or replaced. No oil leaks, an oil consumption test will be required to confirm if oil is burning.

At what mileage did they do oil changes? I have the same engine but change my oil every 3,500 miles. I have 133,000 miles with no problems at all and no oil consumption.

@@TASOUTSIDE not all inline 5 had this issue. Oil rings were low tension, carbon build up creates the oil ring to no seal properly. Fix is replace rings that are higher tension.
Common issue with a lot of motors now and days. Manufactures trying to be cheap and this was Fords doing. This is when Ford owned Volvo

@@yubrandomain Do you know if any of the new Volvos from 2021 to 2023 have this problem? I’m looking to get a new one, but I don’t want to have this issue in the future.

@@TASOUTSIDE nope they fix it. We are only doing rings on first gen VEP and some early 2nd generation VEPs. The new ones are the “B” models, same motor different design for intercooler and cooling system. Not bad.

On my 2012 Volvo S60 T4 with the B4164T (Ford Europe Sigma) with 130,000 Km it’s suddenly using 1 liter of motor oil every 1,100 Km. I switched from SAE 5W/30 to SAE 10W/30 and finally to SAE 15W/40 without curtailing the oil consumption. A New long block from Europe is $4,950 which is higher than the value of the car. Also, the MPS6 has exhibited a “Transmission Low Performance” message, but after having the oil and external filter replaced it’s worked as always… Where can I find the specified piston and ring combination to correct this oil consumption issue? By the way, the local dealer is of no help! I live in Costa Rica.

Sounds like low tension ring issue. The repair is to replace the Piston rings and change the oil filter housing that has the oil trap integrated.
If you have any side wall scoring or bearing scoring. Short block replace has to happen or won’t be right.
As far as the transmission message, never seen that before. I would need a code to isolate.

@@yubrandomain thanks for the expert pieces of advise! Sounds like I will have to find a borosocope to check the sleeves before opening the engine!

    • @yubrandomain
      @yubrandomain  4 місяці тому +1

@@rbruce63 yes move pistons down and see if you have abnormal scoring on sleeves. Depending on borescope depends if you can see or not. If no scoring is on the connecting rod or main bearing, you would be ok doing piston ring replacement.
Piston ring replace requires no cutting of rings. They are pre-cut and marked to what’s top ring and bottom ring including oil ring. Rod bearings are replaced and again no gauging bearings, they are pre-set to spec. Why manufacture says if any scoring is found, short block replacement is required. Very specific design across the board that requires zero measurements.

@@rbruce63 now I had had customers do the EPR engine cleaner with success supposably. The issue with the oil rings is due to the low tension they build carbon between. When the carbon between builds up in the oil rings, creates an issue where they do not seal, thus causing oil burn issue.

Stay away from 2015.5 S60 with turbo 4cylinder. At 98k miles was burning 1 quart every 350 miles. No help from Volvo even though they had a service bulletin calling for new rings and pistons. Now we have all Toyota’s and no problems either… will never recommend or own another Volvo.

@@yubrandomain they told us the oil drain back holes in the pistons were too small and get clogged with carbon. Said there is a service bulletin for it. Requires new pistons and rings- $9800… Volvo called for 10,000 oil changes, we went 6,000 miles and changed oil filter regularly. Car was garaged and those were highway miles. IDK, but there was a reason they moved away from that piston and ring set up and more than just us had that issue for a service bulletin to be issued…

@@yubrandomain they wanted receipts for oil changes. I service my own after the initial dealer services ran out. Did not keep receipts. Just to initiate, they wanted to do oil burn analysis, at a cost of $300. Then “possibly” cover it if I had receipts… at the end of the day, NO engine this day in time should burn that much oil at 98k with regular servicing. Not even my 2001 ranger did at 190k… we can afford a Volvo, but will NEVER give our business to them again.

@@Makemysammich23 in order to good will volvo requires oil burn test. Perform weight of oil and set it off for 1500 ish miles. If oil light comes on return and measure, once we verify it’s burning. Info related to volvo and with the required data piston rings would be replaced. We never have that issue but receipts and test are required. We have customers who have 70k miles, 2013 or even 14 with an inline 5 and we’re still get volvo to good will. Customer is advised they will need to pay for test and service history is required.
