Here in SEA, tipping is entirely voluntary. Nobody would ask you for a tip, nor would you even think of even giving a tip. Pretty sure it's a cultural thing.
Me here in Tennessee going to Longhorn & paying $60ish for myself, husband and two kids 👀 Is Longhorn a 5 star steakhouse? No. Does it taste good? Yes.
Severs make trash income because of US labor laws. Tipping is expected because servers work hard and deserve to make a livable wage. Unfortunately, the US isn't interested in giving a livable wage to those that serve us food.
@@callmeval3542 Yep. Restaurant owners love the absurd pressure that is put on the customer to make up for their unwillingness to pay their staff a living wage.

For all the guys who dont get why he tipped 50 dollars. Its the US. 20% tip is normal. In the us there is somthing called tipped minimal wage. Thank you very much for the scoop man. I always struggle making a decent seafood dinner (usually fish steaks or shrimp) and end up eating out so I can have seafood cooked well. Can you do a nice seafood/shrimp dinner please?
He used to work at a potentially Michelin worthy restaurant that cost less than $250 for two. The real prob is that steakhouses are the biggest scam. They're expensive, fancy venues for American diners too afraid to experience new and interesting flavors.
I don't think there's been a single episode of but cheaper I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. I love that you can take basic every day ingredients and make something look so fancy. It's a really great way to reach out to an audience that can't always get their hands on some of the over the top ingredients you always use. Im not in anyway way shape or form trying to have a go at you with this comment but I find this series is more relatable to me than some of your other videos and I legitimately get so pumped for every episode of but cheaper that shows up in my subscriptions.
Josh, I made those mashed potatoes for dinner tonight, and my family went crazy over them. They’re absolutely the creamiest potatoes ever. And so perfect for a thanksgiving side. They’ll be on my list to fix that holiday.
yes, absolutely. you can't tell the difference, especially if it has been flash frozen, which it most likely is. just remember to thaw it properly. best is by thawing it in the fridge overnight, but if you forgot to and you're in a rush, put it in a pot and under cold slightly running water (make sure it's sealed in a bag ofc)
if it's flash freezed yes (most likley it is). You will not notice much of a difference if any at all and sometimes I have found that they are even higher quality since they have not been sitting out almost any time at all
Why not just try both urself and see ur own preference? I mean some people may taste the difference more and some might not so it kinda depends on who u are. May as well buy both and have two separate dinners and see which one u like more. Just a good excuse to have steak.
This year I find myself celebrating Christmas by myself. And I made all of this. It took some work/time but I followed it as best I could with the tools I have with me. And let me tell you 10/10 would recommend.
Hey Josh! I would LOVE to see a But Cheaper episode with seafood. I know seafood’s usually going to be expensive but I also know you got the insider tips n tricks. 🙌
we saw B roll footage of the food from the steakhouse. and I’m pretty sure everything we see in every video of any youtube video, is a tax write off work expense lol. Who cares, that part was necessary for the video
I’m revolted when a man refers to themselves as “daddy,” but for some reason “papa” doesn’t trigger the same nausea. I’m sure the guy saying it also helps 😂
Joshua paid $50 for the tip to the waiter, and $250 for a meal that could be made with $50. The waiter probably went home and made the exact same meal with a smug smile on their face.
The waiter has to split that tip with the bus boy and the bartender. I’m sure he was happy probably not smug. The meal only cost 50$ to make and he paid the restaurant $200.00 for it, the owner of the restaurant probably has a smug look on his face. Maybe.
@@johannaa6986 nah, they guy with the smug on the face was the landlord of the restaurant, because this is the largest cost of any urban restaurant these days, than comes labor and only than comes produce.
@@johannaa6986 where I'm from waiters don't tip out from their tips, but their sales. It's usually around 2% of the cost of food, so they're only tipping out under 5$ for that meal. If there's a bar, you may tip out the bartender as well on alcohol sales.
Giving a good tip made my heart warm. I’ve spent too many hours serving people who think $5 is what you tip on any bill.... then I lose money but can’t say anything because I don’t want time to feel bad...
Enjoyed your video. I do a lot of cooking at home for the same reason-you can get higher quality ingredients for the money that you’re saving. But also understand that much of the restaurant’s cost is for labor and overhead.

I admit that eating out was always my 'entertainment'. When I was in Europe, I went to a Michelin starred restaurant in Italy and spent well over $150 on just myself (by myself) and coworkers were making fun of me. But when I asked them how much they spent on video games this month, alone, and pointed out, I don't play video games, they shut up. I'm a fair cook--by no means on your level, but I could probably plate this up and it would taste as good as a steak house. However, I can't recreate the service, ambiance, atmosphere, the Experience. Sadly for us all, prices are rising beyond my entertainment budget, and we're all going to be more than grateful for your excellent "cheaper" tutorials. Thanks for being there for us during this difficult time
As a gamer and foodie, I can say with confidence that video games are a much more effective way of getting a lot of entertainment for the least money than eating at fine dining restaurants. If your co-workers are spending $150 a month on games then they're doing it wrong. They're either buying a lot of AAA games or worse, wasting large amounts of money on pay-to-win garbage games which unfortunately some people are dumb enough to do. There are plenty of cheap indie games on Steam that can provide many hours of fun and the right AAA game can provide hundreds of hours of gameplay for $60 (or less if you catch it on sale).
Their "drinks" likely weren't a pint of budweiser. Usually a quality craft beer at a steak house (they frequently brew their own) is gonna prob be ~$8, and any mixed drink is gonna be 10-15. Expensive yes but it's in line with how much cocktails go for at medium or high end places.
I'd love to see a but cheaper: frozen/box meals. Granted, some of those are 80 cents, which you can't really go lower than, but I'm sure you can find some that would be possible
A few years ago my husband and I went to a super nice stakehouse in Idaho Falls, Idaho and I had the “salmon special” that day. I remember it included a sauce over the salmon, maybe some shrimp, and two sides like potatoes, veggies, a salad and a roll. Could you make a salmon dinner with two sides for your “but cheaper” series?
@@Nswix Yeah but it's a set amount, there's no guess work with the tip, what you see on the receipt is what you get and from the looks of it it's cheaper overall before they even tip.
I'm making filet mignon tonight. I really need a video on your technique! I usually do my steaks like you did in the one video with lots of butter, garlic, and thyme.
In most steak houses in Europe such dinner (even dry aged steaks) goes for $30-$50 and you don't have to tip anyone if you don't want to. $215 is insane 😱
BRO! You cured my steakhouse woes. You gave such a great and mostly thorough instruction, that I'm 90% sure I can make for me and the significant other. Now I have the perfect excuse to NEVER pay for expensive restaurants again.
Amazing! As you already demonstrated in another video, one thing that it's absurdly expensive in restaurants but can be made at home ridiculously cheap is fresh pasta with the fanciest sauces you can imagine. Take aglio e olio as an example: flour, water, olive oil, garlic, parsley, chilli flakes, salt, pepper, and there you go, an insanely good dish for like what, 2 dollars?
i always have to remind myself that you’re in america and the prices are balanced with your paychecks. 300$ is half my 3 room apartment + internet in czechia 🤣🤣
most people I grew up with didn't spend $300 for a month of food. In the last decade I haven't spent that on a meal ever. NO matter the occasion. All of american doesnt have $300 to spend on a meal.
I mean, I've been to many steakhouses and have never seen one that expensive, personally. Normally I'd end up paying like $40-$50, but we don't go to over the top resteraunts either lol. $300 for a steak dinner isn't normal tho
Omg. I've not been to a restaurant, nor had "to-go" since late February. That steak...omg. Steak is my favorite thing on this Earth but I am terrible at making it. Anyhow, what about a "but cheaper" on a lobster dinner?
@@Seronns funny you say that, a friend of mine just sent me a sous vide yesterday. I'm pretty ridiculously stoked over it. But the big question is, sear first or after? There's lots of controversy on how to do it, but as long as you don't cook it well done, I ain't gonna say anyone is wrong 😂
@@HannahMattox in my opinion, depends on the type of meat and cook. For something that will get super tender, like when I made osso bucco for instance, I seared first and let the maillard flavor soak in the bag. Otherwise for standard steaks, i'll usually set mine to around 123-125 F, and get a cast iron really hot at the end and do a quick sear to get the nice crust. I keep the temp on the lower side because I expect the quick hot sear to raise the internal a few degrees. Hasn't failed me yet.

Severs make trash income because of US labor laws. Tipping is expected because servers work hard and deserve to make a livable wage. Unfortunately, the US isn't interested in giving a livable wage to those that serve us food.

He used to work at a potentially Michelin worthy restaurant that cost less than $250 for two. The real prob is that steakhouses are the biggest scam. They're expensive, fancy venues for American diners too afraid to experience new and interesting flavors.
Eating out in the NL is wildly expensive though, compared to like a 6 dollar burrito.

Josh, worth buying frozen steaks to save money?
They look different when you defrost it, more gray and oxidised, flavour and texture quite similar if cooked well in my view!
yes, absolutely. you can't tell the difference, especially if it has been flash frozen, which it most likely is. just remember to thaw it properly. best is by thawing it in the fridge overnight, but if you forgot to and you're in a rush, put it in a pot and under cold slightly running water (make sure it's sealed in a bag ofc)
if it's flash freezed yes (most likley it is). You will not notice much of a difference if any at all and sometimes I have found that they are even higher quality since they have not been sitting out almost any time at all
I wouldn't recommend a frozen steak
Why not just try both urself and see ur own preference? I mean some people may taste the difference more and some might not so it kinda depends on who u are. May as well buy both and have two separate dinners and see which one u like more. Just a good excuse to have steak.
