To quote Yoda, "Perhaps Qui Gon would be here still, if not so fast he had ran". Maul quickly realized from just the scuffle on Tatooine Qui Gon would win at the start of a battle, so he used his own youthfulness as a strength, and played into Qui Gons aggressive style
The part that doesn't get enough play in Phantom Menace is Qui Gonns reaction to being told he cannot take Anikin as his apprentice. His face shows he's disappointed in the councils decision, but there's more to it. I think that he was so connected to the force, that he knew that one decision would lead to his death. But he was simultaneously so committed to the force's will, that he went along with it, thinking that the force knew something he didn't (it did. It knew about Luke).
It’s always funny how prequel-era lightsaber fights feel like video game bosses with these play by plays.

always was afraid of playing lightsaber as a kid, ( long time ago xD). wish they had an injury scene with a light saber to stress its utter lethality, even to the wielder.
I'm not as critical of Disney Star Wars as most- but all these people surviving their lightsaber wounds is such an eye roll

I think this duel was arguably the most important in bringing Star Wars back to life. The ferocity and intensity of the duel gave you that sense of struggle of the comfortable Jedi and rising Sith
Just imagine hearing Qui-Gon saying: "I don't know you, but I will find you and I will kill you."

Got to agree. Qui Gon was an awesome Jedi but, if they wanted to show this as an easy fight the role would have went to Sean Bean.
Especially because Liam had a particular set of skills. Let’s be honest, Sean bean should have played Quigon Jinn jk

After all these years, this is the first time I heard that Maul planned to draw them into that chamber. In the movie he looked surprised when the shields activated and separated him from QGJ, allowing the latter a moment to meditate.
On the other hand, from the first time I watched the movie, before I knew the ending, I thought QGJ was pushing too hard and fast. I am close in age to Liam Neeson. Even a younger man would tire at the pace and power QGJ was slamming those saber strikes and chasing Maul all over the Naboo complex.
I would have preferred damage to the building during the larger battle separate the three of them, so it could continue in the future movies. But, I know QGJ had to go for plot reasons, as it was already established that OWK trained Anakin.

Joking aside, I think 1 reason is : Because as the battle wore on, Maul only grew stronger with the dark side, which enhanced his strength and speed yet further.
My absolute favorite duel the music,the choreography the tone that this set and how how the stakes where .... amazing

Watching Ep.1 was hit or miss with the good & bad parts.
So many talk about the annoying Jar Jar or the boring Trade Federation.
That was bad but after seeing the movie many times I just recall this great lightsaber duel & how cool these characters are.
Qui-Gon & Darth Maul made a more lasting impression than the silly forgettable characters.

Great content as always!! There was one you could say prop failure and that was the ray shield emitters were exposed components & could’ve been smashed quite easily using a saber ….. what’s that fight again and you’ll see what I mean when Qui-Gon is meditating and Obi-Wan is caught you can see the race shield emitters are exposed and could quite easily have been eliminated.
Is it cannon that Maul is injured during his first encounter with Jinn? He let his blood lust get the better of him and he attacked a ship full of pirates and took a blaster bolt to the leg on his way to tattooine.

After rewatching Episode 1 in theaters in the last few days, It's definitely a much better experience on the big screen watching this movie I thoroughly enjoyed it and would dare to even say its in my Top 3 favorite Star Wars films

It was amazing to me to see maul beat a jedi master using niman. However, maul was not a master of all seven forms. He only mastered forms 6 and 7.

I’ve noticed that Qui-gon uses Force Push with his hand out and palm down while Obi-wan on Mustafar used it palm out facing Anakin.
Perhaps Darth Maul secretly wanted to convert to the League of Shadows with his idol Ros ... er .. Quigon 😉..
i loved the movie and i enjoyed the duel, i do think Maul in the novelization had a lot more going on, which is always the struggle with movies vs books. also thanks for another video ^.^ much appreciated!~

It makes sense that Qui Gon would be better than people give him credit for, I mean the guy was Dooku's prize student. But sadly, age catches up with everyone eventually, some faster than others.

Darth mauls failure is palpatines failure to be a teacher.
Maul in EU and Books were great. Him KNOWING he was a tool for his master with no intention of overthrowing Sidious, to me, is what made him the most dangerous. No ambition, but seeking praise, makes for a VERY dangerous prospect. It means that Darth Maul unleashed is going to be something too fierce for most Jedi.
As for the Lightsaber Battle, it is my third favorite. First being Battle of the Heroes, second being Empire Strikes Back, third being Duel of the Fates.

Maul vs Qui Gon was awesome!!
I think it would be interesting to see what obi wan thought through out the duel or what maul thought of obi throughout the duel.
Maul used his experience and knowledge of Jinn's fighting style from their duel on Tatooine to craft the perfect battle strategy and trap to kill off whom he saw as his most dangerous opponent. However after killing jinn, he underestimated Kenobi and his hubris and arrogance over gloating over what he trhough was a defeated enemy, got himself killed.
Qui gon jinn didn't just become one with the force he went to different universes and became great warriors in them like Sir Godfrey in Kingdom of Heaven. He truly was a great warrior.❤🔥🔥
I loved this fight! One of my top 5! I was 3 when anh came ,so empire and jedi will always be in the top! Then all phantom menace and sith! I was hoping when 7,8,and 9 came out that as a woman i was going to finally get to see a great female fighter in live action! Well, we all know how that went! Even the live action shows have still not given us one! Damnit, come one there are great lady fighters out there! Star wars needs to give us a great live action duelist!

Qui-Gon's death was the will of the living force.
And he KNEW. Watch the scene in front of the council when they tell him he can't take Anikin as a student. That's not just disappointment in the decision. He knew he was going back to Naboo to meet his end.
The fight being slowed down and watching every offensive and defensive movement makes the epic Duel of Fates so much more profound.
Always wondered why qui never adjusted his style as he aged. Had to have crossed his mind
Per the books, Obi Wan totally switched styles after seeing his master cut down using form 4. He went on to become what some say is the best defensive Jedi duelist ever to live.

Qui gon jin foresaw his own death through the will of the force and allowed himself to get stabbed through. It didnt bode well with maul as it almost seemed at the last moment jinn was not as feirce as he was moments ago. It totally through him off but went for the kill regardless.
Qui gon did this because he knew this was how things were meant to be. He quite literally saw his own death and knew this was meant to happen.
I think so too. You can see it on his face in the scene in front of the council. He knew he was going back to Naboo to his death once the council said he couldn't train Anikin.
Why didn’t Obie Wan Kenobi use force run like they used on the Trade Federation’s ship when the 2/3 Droideeka rolled in? When Qui gon is trying to enter the bridge of the ship. Obie Wan could have run fast to catch up with Maul & Qui gon. Just saying

I never quite understood Maul's desire to avenge the Sith's against the Jedi. Either he knows the truth, that it was Darth Bain that ended the Sith or not. If he did, then it was the treacherous act of one of his own. If not, then the Jedi destroyed them because the Sith were too weak to stop them. In which case, aren't the Sith supposed to detest weakness?
I'm not saying it's inexplicable, I just never quite got it.

Obi-Wan looked like he had a decent chance to slice up Maul in TPM too if he didn't get so angry and fall for the force push.
i mean mate. honestly darth mauls duel in the phantom menace will ALWAYS be the second best duel of all time behind obiwan and anakin. and the soundtrack will always be number 1. I don't think it can really be surpassed.
Splitting the two was the reason Maul was able to kill Qui Gon.

Sith are always outnumbered , remember Maul was fighting two Jedi for a large part of that fight. Anyone who spars in any sport knows how hard that is. Maul was far superior to both of them. But he made the ultimate noob mistake he got cocky and underestimated obi

The duel between Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul was not close at all. This is blatantly false. Darth Maul was VASTLY superior to both Obi-Wan and Jinn. I have the Legends sources to provide and will if anyone posts some incorrect information.
