On an afternoon in September 2001, Director John Edginton conducted a lengthy interview with Rick Wright for his Syd Barrett documentary, The filming took place in Rick's London house.

@@mousiebrown1747 I agree. It wasn't always about a solid rhythm, like a lot of rock. Lots of interesting ideas in there. Nick and Richard gave Pink Floyd it's enormous expanse of sound.
In those few years after Barrett left in the 60s, his playing was basically the sound of Floyd, it's hard not to think of his keyboards when you talk about albums like More, Ummagumma and the Zabriski Point thing

He's the quiet one. The one who chose to speak through his eerie, ghostly, melancholic, spacey, other-worldly sound textures and haunting melodic-harmonic statements that form the musical core of this greatest of bands.
Listen to his playing on "Echoes," "Great Gig In The Sky," or "Any Colour You Like." If you don't get chills, you're not alive.

Problem is, most of the focus was centered on Gilmour and Waters and with good reason so Rick Wright might've been somewhat overlooked by some people. In any case, his musical contributions were appreciated by the majority who knew what he brought to the band

My comment was motivated by my deep hatred for mindless fuckwitted UA-cam commenters who use the word "underrated". They confuse underrated with "not as popular and well known as the front men of a band". Or they use the term because they personally happen to admire and like a particular player when many others don't. It's always self-projection. They forget that millions of fans DO RATE HIGHLY low-profile keyboardists, drummers, bassists, etc. Also, many musos loathe the limelight. They let and even encourage the narcissistic "front men" to feed the publicity machine which makes their band money. They do this because they know they are good (and humble) and don't give a fuck who "underrates" them. Lol.
Losing Rick was like losing family. He was a big part of my life and he is very much missed. Great interview. Thanks for sharing.

After the reunion, Rick and Waters eating in a restaurant and had a laugh. They were made up.
Roger was always a bully (from years of reading and interviews) so everyone in the band had had it with Rogers' depression scenarios, in both music & life in general. Roger is an awesome musician; no doubt about it, but far too one sided when dealing with others. We all known those types of people...

@@paulkinsella6536 Rick has said several times that Roger annoyed him and he annoyed Roger. There was a witness of him being targeted by him since '66. He only said fuck off to Roger reportedly once.

Rick is the most under rated keyboard and melody writers of all time. He rarely did on camera interviews. By the 2006 tour with Gilmour he was still smoking. RIP

I think that more and more people respect (and love) his place in Floyd. Some of their popular albums are greatly influenced by his sound and playing.
One more thought. It’s easy to see why Dave and Richard got on so well together.
I'm reminded of when Gilmour was onstage somewhere years ago accepting an award celebrating Pink Floyd's musical contributions or something to that effect. Dave's speech was very appreciative and emotional, especially when he proposed a toast to his late, great friend Rick Wright who was a huge part of their sound. His voice quivered noticeably for a moment, he was indeed overcome by emotion. To this day, the man is missed incredibly
I always admired his contributions to Pink Floyd no matter how large or small. A great talent and he is truly missed.

Well, I know what you mean but beg to disagree. For one question: Which Floyd? My view is that, just as Lennon and Mcartney were great musicians seperately they were nowhere near what the Beatles were. Their differences and fights were an integral part of the engine that brought the Beatles into the stratosphere, and I feel very much that the same goes for Roger and David. Although being great musicians individually, none of the individual people in the Roger+David Floyd were/are anywhere near the level Floyd was at, and I'm sad to say that I think the same goes for the post-Roger Pink Floyd. The creative engine were the four of them, together, and together they were magnificent, unbeatable. As Rick said in the interview: Floyd did their best work when they worked together, as a whole.

@@Rnrf5150 He only talks about Pink Floyd with David Gilmour and Roger Waters and then Pink Floyd after Roger Waters leaves, maybe he doesn't realise there was a Mk1 Pink Floyd with Syd Barret, some people aren't aware that the original Pink Floyd line up didn't include David Gilmour.
He says 'the four of them', I simply pointed out that there have been five members.
Back in the summer of 1981 a group of faculty and students from the high school I attended in Vermont traveled to Greece for the summer. We rented a villa in the town of Platamon on the Aegean and were fortunate enough to meet Mr. Wright - he was enjoying a visit there as well. He joined us at one of the local tavernas for dinner on a couple of occasions and he was incredibly kind to all of us star-struck 16 year old kids. He was truly a nice guy and meeting him under those circumstances was an absolutely amazing experience.

This is terrific. I've always liked Rick's early song "Paint Box," with its similar emotional tone and sound to that of "A Day in the Life." A kind of detached melancholic psychedelia. Wish he had written more, but he added so much to the group as a whole. Thank you very much for sharing this.

There is a lot of hurt between these guys. There is a lot of pain. I am sorry this happened. They made beautiful meaningful art. Stuff the influences people even today. Kids still listen to this music.

He was unreplacable. Pink Floyd died with him, however, their music will live forever, be remembered and listened to in many years from today.

The songs Rick sang solo on were highlights of the albums they appeared on. In harmony with David Gilmour is the True Pink Floyd Sound.
Shows you what a stand up guy he was, because in the Roger interview he snidely says that Rick would never say it was the lyrics that made them great but then Rick says the lyrics made Dark Side.
Yeah, well that's Roger for ya. If you could apportion blame for the rift that caused Roger to leave, Roger has a bigger percentage of blame than the rest of them combined. I love Roger for what he did, but hated him for who he was.

PF needed a QUEEN moment like when the other 3 members stood up to Freddie and demanded Songwriting/Publishing Credit as Queen instead of just Freddie.
That seemed to equalize that Band instead of the normal tug-of-war over Fame & Money.
After Dark Side, Rick wanted Production Credit on ANIMALS and Roger being Roger saw no value being added so Rick was denied. That is big money being batted around like a beach ball. Band Failure becomes imminent...

John, I have just watched you interview David Gilmore and now Rick Wright. You have a golden touch as an interviewer, having the subject relax and feel comfortable, as if talking to an old friend. I feel I know these people much better now, and they are so human. Well done.
Completely agree with you, all 4 of the interviews were supreme. All four show different emotions about Syd but that is just them being real. Obviously they were very damaged by Syds condition and the helplessness of not knowing what to do to help. It still haunts them you can hear it in these interviews.

Rick was the soul of Pink Floyd. One of the few musicians in my life who genuinely moved me with their works. God, I miss him.
I am currently listening to Ummagumma. Over and over. I really like that album and I can't seem to move past it. It has such a purity to it. It has a beauty to it.
Agreed , for me their best album - but the band don’t like it . There is sense of confidence and creativity without a nod to pleasing record executives. Space rock . The live part is marvellous and who is not intrigued with the fly flying around and being swatted - in stereo !
It's actually a great album. The live album is fantastic and the studio album shows a lot of daring and creativity, if not loved by everyone. Personally, David's The Narrow way is awesome and my favorite cut

Richards silence is just SO loud. Roger really did a number on Rick over years of bullying.
Rick Wright’s beautiful, trippy keyboard sound IS the Pink Floyd for me… it’s so atmospheric & instantly takes me back to the psychedelic era as soon as I hear it!
I think it is interesting that although he expressed a great love of DSOTM, when pressed by the interviewer as to why it hit a chord with the listeners, he did not mention how utterly groundbreaking much of the efforts in the studio were at the time. Yes, the band was very creative, but so was the engineering and production... pushing boundaries. They all pushed the boundaries.

Yes, you are right. He was. Just shows how much talent was in the band and was about to enter the band as Roger would soon find/hone his voice, vision and writing ability and David would carry them to heights that I don't think that Syd ever could have as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. I loved that time in the late 60's through early 70's when all band members were treated as more equal partners/contributors.
Rick was always the second most talented member. Had they gotten anyone less than Gilmore, he would have been the most talented.
When they first started out playing gigs, Rick used to tune Roger’s bass guitar for him. Rick was the most accomplished musician in the group, but never sought the limelight!

Funny how Roger always thought of himself as the most important member of Pink Floyd, but when they split it was the other guys who took the fans.. And it wasn't just the name. They had the Pink Floyd sound. Roger never understood that he needed them more than they needed him.

What Rick didn't realise then was that Dark Side is a work of art on the same scale as Mona Lisa, La Pieta, any Beethoven, Aida, Rhapsody in Blue, levelling Amadeus, way beyond Sgt pepper ... he didn't know... love you mate. 😎

(5:10) *Richard:* "Roger got really angry, threw his bass down and stormed off stage." ....Now there's a surprise. Nobody saw that coming.
There was the famous incident in Montreal (not the one Rick described in the interview). Somebody had lit off a firecracker during the opening of Pigs on the Wing, after the audience was just generally being raucous and inattentive like they were at a bar and Floyd was just the background band, and Waters just snapped. They did push on and play through it.
Waters, while a decent artist and obviously contributed much to Floyd, has such a punchable face and is so insufferable, I can't listen to him talk. He's like a pouty little child, well into adulthood. I hope he's found some inner peace in his later years.
@@runner3033 I have a bootleg with him ranting about that. One of the few times I’ve agreed with his ranting. It was right in the middle of “Pigs On The Wing.”

It is just wonderful how many people have been touched by floyds music. Rick was a late discovery for me but love the jazz chords he included in the sound. RIP a much respected gentleman of music! Thanks for posting.
I agree, but it's not just jazz colorings coming from Rick's keys. There are also a lot of oriental-sounding scales, harmonic minors and that sort of thing, that add to the aura of mystery in their sound. He, probably more than any other member of the band (aside from Syd at the start), defined the "feeling" that was the Floyd, at least up to and including "Meddle."
Not only was he one of the best keyboardest but he belonged to one of the best bands in history

I'd agree, Echos, and the whole album of Wish You Were Here were the most enjoyable to fall back on and listen to even to this day. Rick has such a genuine even keeled take on the band and I really enjoyed this interview. RIP Sir.
Rick Wright was every bit as instrumental in developing the sound and personality of Pink Floyd's music as Waters and Gilmour were. It's seriously shameful how overlooked he often is and I'm just as glad people are finally taking more interest in his work.
RipScissor - I fully agree, Rick tended to be overlooked just because he did very little singing, and offstage was quiet and calm, like you see here.
I cannot listen to Meddle, DSOTM or WYWH without thinking how good Rick was and how important his contribution was to the Floyd.
What an absolutely delightful man Rick was, great interview which I just saw for the first time. RIP sir..
Rick also did great work on “ Animals” and “ The Wall”. Something about the Fender Rhodes in “ Hey You” before the second verse starts perfectly captures the isolation musically that Roger expressed lyrically. They just had different emotional approaches of evoking responses of the listeners.
From my knowledge, that was actually Bob Ezrin. Rick didn’t do much on The Wall.

I’m paraphrasing here, but that’s essentially what Rick said, and I’ve always been the same way. It’s why I managed to love the music of so many I disagreed with on social and political issues.

Very interesting. I knew only the little bits used for the documentary about Syd Barrett that i bought quite a long time ago now. The late Richard Wright had a lot more to say, and the interviewer was interested in other aspects of the Floyd's story anyway. I've always enjoyed Richard's voice, piano and organ and synthesizers sounds, his playing, very soft and gentle, like the man he seemed to be... I think he was an important part of Pink floyd and Broken China proved he could experiment and be inspired as much as Waters and Gilmour, and even more, from a pure musical point of view. Thank you John Edginton !

Such wonderful interviews of all 4 of the pinkies, cept Syd of course. Such a sad thing to experience to lose their friend and bandmate in such a fashion. Syd such a tragic situation since they were under such pressure and wanted to keep the band together. Syd's shadow hung over them and obviously still does for Dave, Roger and Nick. RIP Rick and Syd thanks for all the great music.

There is something about Rick’s eyes that have always intrigued me a lot. There is this spark of child-like wonder behind them. Like little puppy eyes. But at the same time it is shadowed by a dark despair…

What a precious treasure. Time and perspective. Human life and fighting for something maybe better?? A guitar, lyric, friend, loss, joy, sadness. How do you pry them apart, really?!?!
Sadly missed & as the quiet one from The Floyd so much was left unsaid by the man who was in the center of the late 1970s squabbles & even Roger now admits he was too harsh on Rick.... A true legend & at least some old wounds were healed on their final 30 minute on stage for Live 8

For someone like Rick who was a private guy yet so valuable, he gave a fantastic interview to give us all insight as to what he was like as a person to talk to. Great to see this interview with Rick. Super underrated musician IMO. For me he is as much the sound of Floyd as David Gilmour. I’d love to see some of the jam sessions that Rick and David did while rehearing for their tours get released.
What a gem. Rick is one of my favorite keyboard players. His sound was so unique. In my honest opinion, "Great Gig in the Sky" is his masterpiece.
He doesn't deserved to be punke'd and bullied by Roger. I'm glad he pulled through.
Much in the same way the greatest guitarists have gifted us with some unforgettable rift's Richard has gifted us with some unforgettable chords. And the bond or mesh Richard and David would make on songs like Echoes was hard to match in the R&R realm. RIP Richard.
He answers the questions very well unlike so many other musicians who seem burnt out…….Mick Jagger can never find words to answer simple questions he has been asked over and over………Richard certainly valued his brain by avoiding acid 😅…..what a gift to humanity PF provided us…..I’m still enjoying it 50 yrs later ……..😊

Probably the most simple emotional, elegant piano solo I can think of in US and Them

Rick Wright and Dave Gilmour had this really distinctive sound when they sang together. It was magical, ethereal, haunting, and just reached into your soul. Well, it did mine anyway, love the Floyd. DSOTM for me is still the best album ever made, WYWH a very, very close second.

It may be possible to put more out but it’s quite a technically difficult problem as it was all filmed on tape that’s no longer widely used. It was 20 years ago after all. Plus I’m not a big corporation. I’m a one-man filmmaker . So I’m not promising anything more right now.
