I would agree focusing most on writing tunes, because as your production skills improve, you can always go back and remix your own material (or someone else will remix it, if it’s a good song)
Been doing this for a long time and now have a long time friend who started just 2 years ago and this advise is almost completely what I gave him! And the fun thing is he got that fresh vibe and comes up with unusual ideas which is so powerful to see and hear ever time he sends me his files, I’ll help him and guide him and sometimes he is like but you know your shot already and get feathers stuck up my ass and I thank him but mostly for surprising me with his progress and his cool ideas and to be honest after so many years almost 28 years I’m kinda jealous of how he just plays and makes these great song ideas which reminds me that I do have a lot of knowledge and experience but that is just a little bonus it’s about the fun and amazement that all these tools and tricks can do and he put me back on track and loosen up again and now It’s just plain old fun!
