- Editing your podcast is time-consuming enough. Don't make it worse by using Audacity to edit. There are MANY better DAW options. And yes, even free options that are LIGHT YEARS better.
If you're wondering what DAW you should use to edit your podcast, steer clear of Audacity. It will cause you headaches and waste your time. Repaer.fm is a much better solution and can also be used for free.

However, you are right that Audacity really needed to improve its offerings for podcasters. That's why we've put out two major releases with them in mind. Yet, still no real time EQ, which is the big issue. I had to always create my EQ's in FL studio because of it.

We've been using Audacity since we began back in 2009. It's made huge improvements over the years. We leave projects open for hours, overnight even. If the power goes out the recovery brings me back where I left off. But almost never needed to go back and re-edit a podcast after it's been released. I guess you could leave the project open until after you check your work, and just CNTRL+Z a step before mixing tracks, make the correction and overwrite the previous upload. Post-production can be tricky. Always open to learning new ways to improve. Thanks for the info. Cheers!
Audacity is not just free as in free beer, it's free as in freedom. No trials, no blocked features, the source code is free to view/modify/redistribute and it's widely available on different platforms.
I just downloaded Audacity 3.1.3 and it pretty much fixed everything you didn't like about it Studio Steve!! I am SAVED from having to learn another DAW. YESSSSSSSSSSSS. Try it out
this video needs to be updated... Audacity now has non-destructive, and I haven't had any crash issues. (Those were your 2 deal breakers).. the interface has also changed and once I created my hotkeys, it's my editing is lightning fast.

I would recommend updating this video, in light of the updates made to Audacity that have been mentioned by others. Also, would be a good idea to tweak the title of this video; as you mention, Reaper is not free, but it is the only other DAW you mention here, in a video that appears to be about free DAWs.

Reaper is certainly an alternative worth looking at. Regarding Audacity, with the release of version 3.1 a few months ago, it is now nondestructive.

Still destructive.....used it today with vst plugins and couldn't change once i closed the project. I believe you are referring to the editing track upgrade, yes that one is no longer destructive. It is still crushing though, especially when vst plugins are involved....moving to reaper or ocen audio...Am tired!!!

Disagree. Audacity is absolutely fine for hobby podcasting. As is GarageBand from the Mac family. Podcasting is becoming like photography in terms of gear/software snobbery. Go with what you have.
I can’t see your point for SO many reasons. Another one that I didn’t mention in this video is that neither GarageBand nor Audacity do anything close to a cross fade, which is the most critical and common moves for podcast editing. It isn’t snobbery to ask for an editing solution that does what we need it to.
This “go with what you have” attitude is why I made this video. It’s in the same family as “I don’t edit, because I like to keep the convo natural.” If demanding efficiency and professionalism makes me a snob, then yes I’m a big one!

I'm perfectly happy with Audacity. I even recorded some songs. With the new version, Audacity becomes a No Destructive DAW. I don't understand what you have against Audacity... I have a feeling you're promoting Reaper for whatever reason. why should I pay $60 when I can use Ardor for free, for example.
We all have our preferences and opinions about products and services we like and dislike. Just as you prefer Audacity, I prefer any other DAWs. Use your platform to promote the things you like. Great observation!
I use Audacity because its free, really easy to use and really great. I only use it when I have to make easy edits like doing Podcasts. If I want to make a song or audio for a movie or a video I use Pro Tools or Ableton. I know Reaper but I will keep using Audacity anyway. If I have to pay for a DAW I would pay for Pro Tools.

What other ones are there? I thought you were going to give lots of options but you only mentioned Reaper. Reaper isn't free at all. Neither in terms of beer or speech. It's shareware and I think the cheapest option for Reaper is $60 isn't it?
I have both, but as a beginner I'd say, Audacity is easier to start with because its not as overwhelming as Reaper due to all Reaper offers. I have been slow to starting any audio projects but the aim is to use whats easiest as I learn the other.
Most people only need something easy to quick edit some audio and Audacity is just about that. Reaper is just overkill, most of us dont do studio work.
I appreciate your feedback. Let's agree to disagree. Reaper is quick and also easy, more so than Audacity. Pro Tools would be the "studio work" option. Let me teach you how to use Reaper, and I promise once you try it, you'll never go back to Audacity.
I really thought this would actually discuss issues with Audacity and present useful alternatives, but no, I just wasted a few minutes of my life listening to a content-free ad for a commercial software package.

No matter which program one uses, as long as they save drafts their projects will never be destructively edited. Drafts are very helpful.
Agreed. Used Audacity for years, clunky and non-intuitive. Using Reaper just works far better, and it's a full-featured DAW, so can be used for much more than editing pods. Learning curve is steep, but the benefits, oh the benefits.
I like how Reaper is more flexible and competitive when it comes to using different plugins. There are some plugins that are not compatible with the Audacity 64 or 32 bit version. They say you can do much more in Reaper than you can in Audacity but I got too impatient with learning how to use Reaper.

@ Since I've made this comment, Audacity has been updated to now accept VTS3 plugins which is great! Now there's no need for me to use Reaper. Audacity has had an upgrade.

@@ranajoyshil Well for much complex things I would recommend Pro Tools. For easy edits Audacity is much easier to use. Sometimes I just want to add some EQs and a Limiter and dont want really to open a Pro Tools project. Audacity is great. Same with video. Capcut is really amazing for easy video edits, so you dont have to open Premiere Pro.

Steve, I hear a lot of good things about Hindenburg, have you tried it? Also, how about a shootout where you take a raw recorded project and show the editing process with each of the top tools, pointing out the strengths, weaknesses, and differences of each one?
I have no problems with folks using Audacity. I used it until I found better options. As long as you understand the problems it has and are willing to live with those limitations, Audacity can be a great way to get started. No point spending money on something that you might dabble with for a month and that's it. Once you get serious and are willing to spend money on a proper editor, then look at options. Perfection is the enemy of good enough. Most folks aren't producing an Emmy award winning sound track. Spend the money on the microphone first, then your recording environment, then software. If you record a clean signal, destructive vs non-destructive becomes less important.
Downloaded Reaper and it’s way more complicated than Audacity. Wow. This video is outdated now with the new version of Audacity with non-destructive editing, which was one of your two main issues with it. The Reaper interface is slicker, which is why I tried it, but too complicated. Audacity is much easier to use and is free. Also tried Hindenburg, which I liked, but they’re now moving to a yearly subscription model unless you pay $400 one time fee. So I stayed with Audacity. It just works. No fuss, no muss. And Reaper isn't free like the clickbait title claims. After free trial you have to pay $60, which isn't bad, or be a dirtbag and ignore the payment request box which I guess is set up on the honor system according to this video. I didn't get that far.
Hey Steve, great video! I'm a stagehand switching to being a virtual assistant and have to do some light podcast editing. I completely respect the work audio engineers do since I work with them at huge venues. If I choose to specialize in podcast work for clients, I'll be sure to take your full-blown course :D

Open source makes it good for editing. I don't have issues with crashing because I know how to use my PC and most "crashes" are user error.
At 2:37, Marianna's tweet is saying "after effects has the audacity to keep crashing and freezing" - that sounds like After Effects is crashing to me, not Audacity.

thanks for this video. I've tried the new audacity but it did something weird today that I didn't like, so that's why I'm here. Going to give Reaper a try. I don't need anything fancy just amplify, compressor, and a simple eq adjustment. Audacity crashed my windows explorer a bunch of times today, I narrowed it down
Could you do a video on which format is the best for Podcasts? German speaking Podcasters are discussing WAV, mp3 and M4a formats. Some are saying that it's best to upload WAV files to your podcast host because streaming providers compress the files anyway and make them available in different quality. I've always thought mp3 files would be best as the file size would not be too big for the listeners. What are your thoughts on that?
Well in my opinnion mp3 is better for larger Podcasts and WAV for short ones. Anyway, no need for more than mp3. You dont need that much quality for Podcast as for music. You dont have a huge amount of mixing and mastering that can be lost with the mp3 compression in Podcasts anyway.
Audacity use to be cool now it crashes everytime I try to export
Reaper is not free and open source nor is it particularly intuitive. I'm not a podcaster but a musician and it works for me

Reaper is not free. It requires a paid license. Which is $60 for individuals (non-commercial use), non-profits, or small commercial (under $20k per year gross). Business use requires the $295 license fee. To me, this is all very reasonable (especially when compared to subscription alternatives).
Prior to the upgrade it was great, worked quickly... now I can't even get it to export or save... I think the problem it has so many bells and whistles there are just too many... Seriously most of the time you use the same things, compression, noise reduction, amplifications or equalization Seriously there's too much now... which now it bogs my computer (which is fairly quick)...
I understand the frustrations. You want your DAW to be reliable and efficient. This is why I recommend Reaper.fm. Not perfect but better than Audacity

The destructive recording is incorrect, it can be saved pre-export, the program does go through a "Jamming" phase with both recording and play back. Rather suspect there is a vested interest here.
2:18 you say "destructive editing recording software" but on the screen the text says "According to pending software." So my question to you is: Do you really check every one of your videos, one last time, before uploading to UA-cam? Apparently not. As a V/O artist of many decades I was about to subscribe, but definitely not now.

Sorry to interrupt here, but I think, this video is out of date and not relevant anymore. Audacity made significant improvements related to your 2 complaints. I ve never had to face this problem with destructive recordings. and now it has been fixed by audacity, and the thing about crashes is irrelevant either. Also in the past years i've never experienced any destructive crashes. If it crashed, i could then get back and recover where I left the things. Huge advantage over thoer softwares, because crashes occur on ALL softwares.
Plus audacity is much more intuitive than other daws, which is why they are so successfull.
So to me your specific complaints are irrelevant. And I would like to know if its your opinion or if you are sponsored , lets say off chance.. by reaper.
Hey I am happy you confirmed my personal feelings about Audacity - used in only once and wow clunky and backward working and thinking. I found you because I was looking on UA-cam for a better podcast DAW. I used Audition for about 10 years and I still love it but the price makes it worth checking out the competition first. So your say "reaper", but is there a low to medium cost DAW that could give me what Audition has????

Yes. Get your free fully functional Reaper software. It works for 60 days. The thing I really like about Audacity is it works longer than 60 days. I think if you're going to dog a good free software package, you should at least have an equivalent alternative.
I will say that I run into issues when I record on one machine and transfer the project files to another for editing. I had a dedicated stream/recording box which I do not use for editing. Because of that, the projects opened on another computer complain about missing audio devices. I haven't found a decent workaround yet beyond exporting the project as a WAV and creating a new project just for editing on the editing machine. Either way, makes things hard to share with distributed teams (dropbox project files around).
my issue with reaper is it has a massive learning curve. I have played around with it for weeks! not hours, weeks which is months and can not get it to work easily or even how to edit in it an aaarrrrgggg! I've watched so many YT vids on it, it just is not user friendly that's why so many go to Audacity.

The main difference between the two are the layout and the interface. Both are great and can achieve awesome results, especially in terms of efficiency. Adobe Audition is a wonderful option. It’s just a bit pricier than Reaper, but worth every penny.

Any software is destructive. Reaper is no different, I mean if uve saved and left the program of course it’s gonna save the change, that’s par for the course!
I've used Audacity for various audio tasks for years, I don't remember it ever crashing. It was a rapid load and go even when spinning hard discs were the only game in town on a Pentium III. It IS somewhat clunky, and the interface is dated but I don't care about that.
Reaper's good if you have advanced requirements. But frankly, its UI is unnecessarily cumbersome - even for more advanced DAWs. For ~99% of podcasters - or other spoken word formats - I'd prefer Audacity; Reaper could actually do well by borrowing some of user-friendly Audacity functions; eg easily grab any chunk of audio, move it around, delete, stretch. Even simply things like zooming in and out, all the key tools are easily laid out etc, without the need to go into advanced screens or scroll through the long menu items.

I wanted to ask you for some info: if I have an mp3 audio file and I import it into Audacity to modify it when I export it, I always export it in mp3 or to have better quality(?) I export it in wav for example with a setting like: freq.44100 and a 32bit encoding? Or doesn't it make anything better? Thank you!
Audacity is an open source software. That means ANYONE who can program can edit it to suit their needs.
Yeah, I use a pro DAW or at least it's pretty good Studio One, but I prefer Adobe Audition over Reaper or Studio One for most audio edits and mastering, non mixing. Audacity has improved but it is not a goto editor.

I use a usb condenser mic. My biggest problem with Reaper is latency when recording. And I cannot find solutions online.
Hi Rudolph! The easiest solution for the latency is to simply mute any live track. Most USB microphones and audio interfaces have A direct monitoring feature that allows you to hear what’s coming through the microphone before it hits your computer. This is because virtually every digital audio workstation has latency while using USB technology.
When you’re done recording, then you can unmute, and disarm the tracks for record.

I am a brand new podcaster who is just about to upload my first podcast. I have tried Audacity and i get all sorts of weird results and I just cant get used to it.
I use it for basic editting, it's fine. I use another ap to record my podcast and just edit with Audacity.
I question the wisdom of recommending an app - you can't even get hold of?

Hey, I was using Reaper (demo), but without an interface. I just used a USB microhpone SHURE V5 (I used it with Audacity, and it always worked fine). I recorded with Reaper and when editing; I just tried to cut part of the track and the message: "Force Media OFFLINE" kept appearing and appearing. So frustrating! And that option was not ticke in the Item menu!.. You think this is due to the fact I am not using an interface??? Reaper can't work with an Usb microphone without interface? Thanks..

My bad Karl. Adobe Audition, Hindenburg, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, AND Reaper.
I did use Audacity for a couple of years to record commentary for UA-cam videos and on other occasions. But with this shady "Muse" cooperation putting user tracking in it I stopped using it entirely and now record my audio in Kdenlive directly where I need it anyways.
The user tracking is very strange isn't it?

This program is hard to use. Using Sony Vegas for audio editing feels dirty. I want something specific for audio editing.
Reaper sounds like a Win rar. So there has to be a 7zip of audio editing.

I have Audacity 3.4.2. Your claims are invalid. Saving a Audacity file as a project saves the edits that you can change. Not sure what the issue is. If you don't audition your own work before going live, you have no business on air. All this hack is doing is earning his $20.00 promo kickback for pimping the competition, not offering a legit alternative.

Does anyone know how to set up two separate mics to record in Reaper? I plan on creating a podcast with a friend using two separate USB mics on my Dell laptop and I can't figure out how to record on two separate mics, on two separate tracks.
I am looking for the same capability, two separate mics and tracks but with two separate PC's in separate locations recording simultaneously and then edited at one location

I don't want to record anything. I want to edit the sound of an old recording to make the voice clearer, but there seems no way to actually input an mpg file. There isn't even an import button. WTH?

Your claims are misleading. FYI Reaper makes you go through a brick wall to edit using multiple prompts when Audacity only uses one. The time wasted on Reaper makes it inferior to other DAWs and Audacity has updated their software to make it non destructive. Time to rethink your content.

Ableton Live Lite is what i use.
Since 3.1 Audacity has non-destructive editing. Also is rock stable in 2023 and supports realtime VST/VST3 effects. So unfortunately the only cool thing about this video remains your girlfriend's face
