    This video was deemed not suitable for ads by UA-cam’s robots. It was reviewed by a human who agreed with the robots. I whined and got a second review and they finally deemed it okay! Let me know if you feel if this video is as extreme and off the chain as UA-cam originally thought it was!

    I have a family friend who was part of the secret service and he took us in for a tour of the White House after hours. This was all before 9/11 of course but I got to go into the Oval Office and the Lincoln Bedroom, we even went down to the kitchens and I have a picture on the wall of me and my Dad at the press room podium. This video makes me miss the old days of taking weekend trips to DC and going to all the different historic sites, I really took it for granted.

    So I generally park at a metro station and then use the metro to get around DC. I highly recommend the Arboreal Garden building between the Space Museum and the Capitol Building. Beautiful 3 story greenhouse, and exhibits on plants in the different biomes/areas of the U.S. - reminds me of Living with the Land at Epcot!

    There are many copies of Lincoln life mask all over the country. My local art museum, has a copy. It includes a cast of his hands also, as closed over some sort of rod. One of the copies of the life mask was used to make the original Mr. Lincoln animatronic at New York worlds fair and Disneyland. ( The one bob gur redesigned last minute to get it actually working).

    Try parking at the Ronald Reagan Building at 14th and Penn Ave NW (Federal Triangle). Metro is only running 30 percent of their trains and the headways are too long - especially on weekends. It is walking distance to several of the Smithsonian museums.

    Hi Jacob! If you go through Lafayette Park you can get a photo closer to the White House. There are usually a lot of tourists there for the photo op. Unless you want to pay to park in a garage or cross reference a billion parking signs, the best way to get around is the metro. It has a very cool mid-century modern design (and a famously designed map by Massimo Vignelli) and there is a stop for the Smithsonian which will take you right into the center of all the museums.

I love your videos!!! 🤍 the best parking you can get to go to the museums is around the national mall! Most of the museums are around the perimeter of that but you would definitely have to get there early!

    What a unique place to film, Jacob. You do such a good job of finding all the quirky attractions and diversions. Those are the ones I love too.
    After all that security to get there, I was surprised they let you film.
    You should watch the TV series The Knick, starring Clive Owen. It's all about the drugs that were used in New York hospitals in the early 1900s. Super fascinating and well done.
    Roosevelt's summer cottage is close by to where I live (near Maine). It is free and open to visitors and is really neat.

      You do realize If they had never criminalised drugs and not created the DEA they would be more people alive today? Ah, the iconic half smoke! Gods, I miss half-smokes, I've never seen them anywhere but DC but haven't been back since I retired. (I'm surprised, btw, that you didn't mention they were a bit spicy. Are you sure it was a real half smoke?) There were whole weeks when I had little time for lunch and fetched me a half-smoke from one of the stands in front of our building. I suspect the food trucks haven't gone back into action, alas -- they used to gather by the l'Enfant Plaza station and were worth a trek over for lunch if I had enough time.

  • @JJMarkin
    @JJMarkin 2 роки тому

    As others have already said, park in one of the Metro station parking lots out in the 'burbs. If you're coming up from NC, I'd recommend the Vienna Station -- two large lots, plus two parking garages, and no city driving to get there. If you come on a weekday, come early before the commuters take up all the spaces. Note: you do have to buy a Metro card (available in the station); you can add money to it if you run out or low. The card is needed not just to ride the Metro or the bus but for the parking fee. (See URL, below.) For the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), National Museum of American History (NMAH), & the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), get out at Federal Triangle. For the museums on the opposite side of the Mall, the Smithsonian Station is closest, except for the National Air & Space Museum (NASM) and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), which are at the far end and closer to L'Enfant Plaza. (Follow the signs inside the Metro Station and do *not* go out the wrong exit or you might get thoroughly lost. Trust me, been there, done that.)
    For museums, always check their websites before going. Some are closed, and some close in ad hoc fashion -- the Smithsonian, for example, had to close some of their museums on the Mall because too many guard and maintenance staffers had come down with COVID, so available staff was consolidated and redistributed to a few. Also, NASM is closed until some time in March due to major renovation. (Some of the glass roofing leaked, and a few slabs of marble cladding had fallen from the outside wall.) However, check their Udvar Hazy Center out in Chantilly, Virginia -- that's where the space shuttle is, among many other famous planes. New building, very impressive; also plenty of parking, expensive alas but it's out in the boonies near Dulles Airport, so there's no other parking outside their lots. NMAAHC is on the same side of the Mall as (and next to) NMAH -- very worth seeing, but I'm not sure they'd be thrilled with your filming there. Check first. It can be a very emotional place. (If Emmett Till's coffin doesn't haunt you, if shackles made in toddler size, don't reduce you to tears, you have a heart of stone, despite your experience in protective services.) I think the National Zoo (Metro out on the Red Line to the Woodley Park/National Zoo station) is still by reservation only.
