Pearl hella foreshadows the effect emotions can have on the physical world from straight up manefesting the flames of his fears. Remember that the OG plan was four yonko, the story was going to be waaay waaaaaaay shorter. So Oda putting something like this back in the baratie arc isn't strange, and Pear specifically fight Sanji who's someone who's passions burn hotter than flames.

My friends and I said it was such a shame that Krieg got cut(heh) cause his fight against Luffy really showed Luffy's resolve and had great scenes like Luffy punching through the spiked cape and Luffy falling into the sea with his finishing move, content to know he won.

  • @RoadtoArkham

I appreciate this video a lot. One thing that's become painfully apparent to me is how uncritically people treat this story. Not that it's a bad thing for your average fan, but even personalities who devote themselves to One Piece seem to approach things very uncritically. It really surprised me to see people discussing the Live Action with hour long videos, while simultaneously admitting they hadn't seen or read the East Blue Saga for years. The underrating of Krieg's thematic role is a crime, since it's really the first moment we see just how far Luffy and Zoro are willing to go, and, as you said, demonstrate to Sanji what it really means to pursue your dreams. Even Pearl, as obnoxious as he is, serves as a very blunt statement about those who aren't willing to put themselves on the line.

@@diegocorvalan5435are you talking about Don Krieg?
      Either way that's highly subjective
I found Krieg to be a really cool and interesting villain
He was really imposing due to his size, build and wealth of resources which he clearly was not shy of showing with his solid gold armor and diamond knuckle dusters.
But even with all that the way he chooses to fight most his battles is by surrendering then ambushing his opponents while they think he's down. Everything about him is the complete opposite of everything Luffy was at that point and even hundreds of episodes later.
You're valid to find him boring btw like I said it's subjective. I just wanted to point out how that's not necessarily a knock on his character. Unless you meant Pearl this whole time in which case yeah agreed. I mostly forgot his existence tbh.

If you talk about live action, don krieg inclusion would bring another exposition about grand line. How gin and krieg armada survive trip from grand line to east blue while SH need a map to enter grandline? And made a whole show somewhat disjointed.
I am not disagree with you or the video. What i am about to say is shounen has special trope that character development is mostly through fighting. And the fighting itself is heavily stylize. Meanwhile, western drama is different medium, to make character development through heavily stylize fighting, it must have some logical exposition to it, either boxing drama or war drama, where you could talk heavily in the middle of the fight. For ex is ep 4, kuro vs luffy, talk in the middle of the fight looks cheesy and silly. For western drama, character development could be achieved by more conversation than fighting.
In the perfect world, i wish the live action could adapt this story someday.

Don Kreig is like a prototype Franky. He's got the mutton chops, he's decked out head-to-toe in weapons and gear, he's super strong to carry all of that. What separates the two is tact. Kreig, much like Kuro, thinks everything can be planned and outwitted, but sometimes it's just sheer willpower. Kreig likely got into that encounter with Mihawk because of that massive armada that Kreig commanded, drawing more attention to his crew than if he ran a single ship. Even if he wasn't up against Mihawk, he likely would have encountered Crocodile and Baroque Works and fallen victim to their vast network throughout the early stages. Given their attitude, they would have also been trounced by Galley Law. The issue with Kreig's plan was trying to bring an untrained army of pirates and wage wars with any faction they may come across. Gin and Pearl were his best men and Pearl was a mentally unstable fighter, creating a double edged sword given his disposition.

    • @aceclover758

Given how weak and low willpower his fodder crew are, also the size, Baroque works would’ve easily infiltrated them and destroyed them from within

      Himself, Gin and Pearl

Although something interesting I want to note is that Don Krieg *did* win the fight. He ended up getting back up, while Luffy sank deep into the depths of the ocean. This video makes me so friggin happy cause this is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I found out they cut the Krieg Pirates to make room for more Arlong. There really aren't any One Piece villains (except arguably Foxy, though it was clear from the start that he would be a pushover in any situation other than the Davy Back Fight) that encapsulate the cheap bastard gadgeteer fighting style that Krieg uses. The fact that Luffy beats him primarily through sheer attained strength and willpower establishes that Krieg's style of combat simply isn't viable in the Grand Line, and that both Luffy and the later antagonists possess a much greater willpower than Krieg could ever dream of having. Similarly, Krieg is also a reflection of the way real-life pirates would operate, prioritizing victory above "playing fair". This establishes the massive gap between real life and One Piece in a wonderful way. Great video, keep up the good work!!

I feel like it takes away from Mihawk if he hunts them down onto a beach to take them out as opposed to them still fleeing while he follows in full relaxation and strikes from his ship. When he swings Yoru around there the gap seems dramatically smaller (especially since the events at Baratie have Krieg feeling more confident again, which makes him facing Mihawk/intending to more believable, as opposed to how it seemed to me in live-action). Alas.. I do understand the constraints of episode numbers.

Bro had a legitimately impressive fleet but he had no way of navigating the grand line, no way of having enough supplies for that large of a fleet and of course a fleet that large immediately draws attention. The Seven Warlords are supposed to hunt pirates for the WG, so are the Marines. Plus no one on the grand line is gonna help a massive fleet of asshole pirates. I was so upset when I saw they cut that out. Also the parallels/contrasts between Gin and Sanji as two right hand men!!
The East Blue Saga to this day remains my second favorite saga of One Piece (first is Water 7) and it makes me sad when people don't realize how elegant Oda's writing is in it. The antagonists are all designed to emphasize the story's themes and the strawhats' character traits and serve as great foils to them.

    Don Krieg
    - actually tanked so many powerful attacks from luffy, even multiple finishers and in midair
    - fought with a 1 ton weapon effortlessly
    - stopped a moving mini ship and threw it with a single hand
    - had a huge arsenal of powerful weapons that made luffy bleed
    - Actually would have killed luffy by trapping him in the steel net and throwing him in the ocean if nobody was there and sanji hadn’t gone in to save him
    - Even after passing out, he got up again even WHILE unconscious(that’s what willpower really means, he will probably have strong haki too when he gets it)
    - Plus he had just been attacked by mihawk so his crew was 50 times less in number than it used to be and he had just survived crippling starvation and we know how severe starvation is in anime
    - People called him Admiral of the pirate fleet, strongest man, he was already admiral level
    - In every arc luffy fights the strongest opponent and zoro fights the second strongest and there is a noticable power gap between the two, luffy fought don krieg in this arc and zoro fought mihawk. He is already pirate king level.
    - Also, Ghin is the lurking legend.
    - Moreover, Ghin after having barely just survived starvation a few minutes ago after being chased by marines for days and having one of his shoulders broken by don krieg absolutely owned sanji and there was a definite gap in their power.
    - So he probably could have defeated a lot of enemies sanji would be able to handle until he unlocked diable jamble.
    - And these two would also probably only get stronger as the show goes on.

Yeah. Even someone said new people should just jump into One Piece by starting with the Reverse Mountain Arc/Baroque Works Saga and I'm like "wtf no!". If you're going to get into One Piece, start with Chapter 1/Episode 1.

That ending was great 😂 power scalers use that trash logic and it's hilarious. "In this scene you can see Sakura used the summoning jutsu at the same time as KCM Naruto and EMS Sasuke, therefore she's as fast as them"

I really enjoyed this cideo! You had some really great points about how Kreig contrasts wih the other Baratie characters.
I do think Kuro's failing is more complex than his cowardice and want to retire from piracy. I think his big flaw is how he wants to give up a life of piracy bit his actions are still that of a backstabbing pirate.
He claims he wants a peaceful life but forms elaborate schemes to get Kaya's money, and plans to kill all his crew. He can't see any life outside of piracy even if he cant admit it

I love how you made this video, I to was dissapointed a little when they killed Krieg off in the show. My friends and I made jokes about his title (which you should have mentioned) "THE MEANIEST DAWG OF THE EAST" so I grew a love a kin to the Buggy and Ussop memes that he was the most dangerous character. So I sorta fell in love with him. Then He died.

I find Don Krieg’s diminished role to be the only way in which the live-action truly disappointed me. Would it have been nice to see Jango, so Kuro’s plan wouldn’t be left with a hole or two? Yes. Would it have been nice to see Gaimon, so we could get some boxed and sheltered son jokes? Yes. But neither of those two is the villain of an entire mini-arc, so it’s easy to understand how time constraints can cut them out.

I’d say Kreig really raised the stakes of the Grand Line. If him, a very much feared Commander of Hundreds of Ships, went to the Grand Line and got fucked up, then the Strawhats really have their work cut out for them.

I thought Live Piece's Baratie was unwatchable due to removing its true and narratively proper final boss from the episode
and just having him get 1shot by mihawk unsummarily offscreen
It wasnt enough to write him out of the east blue saga
    no no
they brought him in just for that.
    Disrespect.

I always loved the East Blue Villains, Kuro is still one of my all time favorites and I also like Krieg. He is in a way similar to Kuro, both are the enbodiments of what Pirates truly are, not a romantic interpretation that goes around in One Piece. This is also a reason for my to like Blackbeard. They are true pirates with the will to do everything!

I think Krieg's failure as a character comes from just how specific his situation is. Everything about him downplays his threat as a villain, his men are desperate and starving, his ship is in shambles, he's retreating from the Grand Line already and giving up on his dream. Don Krieg is a sad, pathetic, broken man by the time he's introduced and that just doesn't make him feel threatening. He comes off like more of a joke than anything else with his gold armor and his reliance on firearms and hidden weaponry. He doesn't feel like a problem, he feels like a side villain they should clown immediately and be done with.
Thematically he is important to showcase the value of honor among pirates. He's a coward, he doesn't have the courage to put himself on the line. So it makes sense to contrast that with Luffy. But then you take a step back and we're looking at a cowardly sniveling nobody who has to be saved from starving by the food place in the food arc, and it's all just way too on the nose, right?
Honestly, Sanji's backstory handled this way better, showing Zeff's ability to put his life on the line for Sanji despite painting himself as a cowardly scumbag in the process. That part of the story absolutely nailed it, blending the food theme with the ideals that shape the character incredibly naturally. I just wish Krieg could have done the same with his own deal.

    • @MasterofRoku
      @MasterofRoku 11 місяців тому +2

Thing is, Don didn't give up on his dream to be the Pirate King. As soon as his men were fed, he told them "we're going back to the Grand Line. But first, we're taking that silly restaurant ship and Zeff's log book so we'll survive out there."

    • @dethhollow
      @dethhollow 11 місяців тому +1

@@MasterofRoku I feel like the point still stands, though. He was forced to retreat. He didn't have what it took. He couldn't go back without something to justify why this time would be different while Luffy just keeps going headfirst into danger every time. Like this is a clear theme, right?
Also having finally watched this part of the show.... Holy crap, Don Krieg not being there changes things...! Because without Don Krieg, there's actually nothing for Sanji to actually do in his own arc, so it's just like Sanji's entire deal is he kicks the crap out of a dude, feeds Ginn, and then after Ginn leaves one of the Fishmen kicks his ass and Sanji just joins up for his own reasons.
I mean, it's not inconsistent or anything, it makes enough sense, but they really needed to give Sanji something so he could prove himself. Otherwise him joining just sort-of feels tacked on and half-assed. We didn't even protect the restaurant because it was never put in any danger! Luffy just showed up, racked up debt, his friend got clowned on by a Warlord, and they they left with Zeff's best chef!
Holy crap, the changes to this one felt weird!
