Historic match that led to the implementation of Hawkeye and later electronic line calling at a lot of pro tennis tournaments

I don’t see how the @usta can post this match knowing the cheating that went on. Do better and not by celebrating the cheater umpire and the cheater Capriati !

What cheating? She didn't make bad line calls. The umpires did. She may not have seen the mistakes.

because jennifer won the match because of her good playing and defending. why dont you check out the match they played at roland garros months prior and watch match point. jennifer hit a ball clearly on the line and won the point, the linesperson called it out and serena kept saying it was out and didnt even try to point to the mark to show it was out. thats on clay where you can see the mark. usually you point to a mark, serena didnt do that. normally you point to the out mark but serena knew it hit the line and there was no mark instead they had to play the point again and jennifer moved on didnt make a big deal, she didnt expect serena to give her the point and that was on match point! this match was on a hard court, no mark to show, impossible to see the mark, no way any player should be expected to overrule a call on a hard court when they dont know a hundred percent. the players were not able to see the points be played in slow motion over and over like the public is being showed. the battle is between you and the umpire and thats it. thats tennis. in jennifers entire career she has never cheated once. she got robbed just like every player gets robbed. jennifer never pulled any bullshit games, never tried to stall her opponents, never took medical timeouts to disrupt her opponents rythme. players including serena pulled that stuff with her all the time, stalling her serve when supposed to play to the servers pace. jennifer didnt need to cheat to win. she never took away from her opponents victories, never made excuses that she was injured or whatever. never complained about henin who was notorious for doing this. how many times had she beaten serena already? she beat her 2 times already that year. they played like 17 times. how many calls did serena think jennifers balls were out but were in? this happened over and over in tennis matches before hawk eye and it was bullshit and unfair for all the players. jennifer should of never been put on the spot like she is the only one who is supposed to call her own lines and give points away left and right and its only jennifer expected to do that when no one else does? they would of expected her to do it all the time. and when was asked she meant at least the questionable call didnt come on match point like at their roland garros match, which is true. jennifer could of easily lost the match after having to replay that match point the way their matches went. this was the first game of the third set. this is on the umpire not on jennifer. jennifer had to deal with atrocious calls over the span of 15 years and she didnt look to her opponent to do anything, because thts not how it works. when you saw hawkeye finally be implemented so many players made horrific challenges, roger federer got so many wrong. so when the ball is coming so fast especially on hard court the players eyes see it differently especially from certain angles they cant see the full 3d of the ball. anything close to the line you cant be a hundred percent unless you see a mark or have it played back which jennifer had asked for many times. this is like in a football game, expecting a player to call holding on himself, or say yes i pass intereferred, or in basketball a player calling a foul on himself when that might very well be the case. but no one expects them to do it, hello no, its up to the referee in all sports. tennis is no different and its tough shit, it happened to everyone before electric line calling.

Man I don’t like Serena, but she was done so dirty in this match. Absolutely awful and unacceptable line judging, the worst I’ve ever seen in such a high level event. It happened at some critical moments as well. I’m fairly certain she would have beaten Dementieva and Kuznetsova in the following two rounds had she not been cheated out of this match too.

The match that led to the challenge system. I love how they cut out all the parts where Serena was cheated. Then wonder why she was always on edge at the US Open.
