17 years old and beating Clijsters, Seles, Martinez, Davenport and Hingis on her way to lifting her first Slam. Serena is/was such a special athlete. 👑
I don’t know anyone currently who has had to play even a quarter of the caliber of those players to win a slam.

It was amazing. Although Clijsters was younger than Serena and wasn’t a big player yet. But obviously already very good.

And tennis was never the same after this! What an incredible start to an incredible career!
Tennis wasn't the same either after Schiavone won the FO 2010.

@@carrerau7138 yes why not? Game has changed. Mavartilova was facing fat housewives. Swiatek topspin is deadly against one handers. Like nadals was against Roger. She would eat that backhand. And rybakina sabalenka will outpower Graf. Graf lost to slow Davenport in slam final. Lmao

Serena's serve at 17 was already massive.
She was also all woman at 17
Extremely rare talent she is. The fact that for every era of tennis she was in, she adapted her game style to that era. It’s going to be a long time till we see a female player like her on the wta.
This is why I don’t like people dying because if people die everyday that means no good athletes

People talk about these girls and only power tennis. These girls were ahead of the new game. Their readiness to hit the ball, the incredible angle shots drop shots. Volleys they had it all. They redefined the game. As Graf Said, they have no weaknesses.

To see the look each players face after she beat them is priceless, they knew they had to get to the gym and work harder, that's why there was so much aminosity between the top players and venus and serena, absolute queen's of the tennis courts ❤

Serena 😮 ! She was soo small, just like Venus. By the time I was old enough to know her , she was beast! She bulked up , got so much more power !
I remember watching this match on tv and marveling at Serena's court coverage, extraordinary fitness, and will to win. From day one she was hellbent on scorching record books like Graf before her. I was also hoping that her victory would spur Venus on which it did. Both improved after this US Open.
And yet Serena had no important record at the end of her career...
@@carrerau7138 You're kidding right? For starters, she remains the only player male or female to have won a singles title on tour in 4 different decades. Serena's had her detractors in the sport. But that doesn't diminish her accomplishments on or off the court.

Serena 1999 us open can be most legendary run ever. Defeated five players who won 22 slams combined.
Steffi's 1989 was by far more legendary, boy.
She defeated four players who won 49 slams combined.

@@carrerau7138 Steffi won't have ,22 slams without stabbing as she has won only two slams from 1990 french open to 1993 aus open as she needed her rival to get stabbed. Her 22 will always be counted along with seles stabbing. Serena won without any of rivals getting stabbed

Anyway, do you have any statistical evidence for a female player winning 7-9 slams within about 3 years (like Seles in 1990-93) also winning close to that number in the next 3 years?

Late in her career, her net play wasn't the best. It cost her a lot in the 2016 Australian open final. But looking at her matches at this event and some of the matches in 1999 and early in her career, her net play was amazing. I really can't figure out what happened
In 1999, she was still playing both singles & doubles w/ Venus in Gand Slams consistently as she won both titles at the US Open that year where as in 2016 she rarely played doubles other than at Wimbledon/Olympics which is why her net play declined over the latter years of her career.
I noticed that her net play started to go awry after she came back from the foot injury in 2011 and became very dependent on if she was playing doubles.
Like she didn't play doubles at 2007 Australian Open and played some fabulous points at the net coming off very few tournaments in 2006 so her instincts there were very much in tact.
They could've also gone astray in the late 00s but she was playing doubles at the slams regularly so it's tough to say.
Patrick only wanted her at the net to hit smashes and only focused on the net after the 2016 AO debacle where she looked clueless against Angie lol but she wasn't good at volleying any longer when they started working together, again unless she was playing doubles at the same tournament.
Also, I think it's because overall game has changed. Other female players have gotten more powerful and nowadays, it's more baseline hitting than serve and volley.
Weaker shots coming at her here than later in her career.
Plus...it wasn't really that good here either...Serena got away with half ass net play her whole career. Look at most of the double matches...Venus carried her ass and she was the first to admit it.
