Interesting how polarizing Rio is. I personally LOVE it and might be one of my favorite bottles. I put it up there with my michters 10

Found both of these for under $80 in the DFW area. Both very different but great in their own ways and definitely a buy if you’re a Penelope fan. Still the 9yr 4 grain is my favorite. I’m hoping to get this years 15yr since I missed out on last year’s 15. Great review and those notes are spot on! Thanks bro

Definitely am pleased with this RIO. I actually stumbled upon this bottle and wasn’t truly looking for it.
I had a media sample of the tojaki batch 1 and really liked it haven’t found this new batch yet but older sounds even better. I remember the first batch could be found for like 70-75 though
I like the Amburana flavor a lot. The Rio is great. I like the Lucky 7 New Yorker as well. Great review. Thanks
Having missed out on Rio batch 1…and never being able to find any other amburana finish whisky (northern NJ) I finally got to try my first one a couple weeks ago and understood why it became so popular so quick. Bought a second bottle to have a backup, but I probably won’t buy any other bottles based off all the reviews of them all tasting similar.
Man, I have the batch 1 Tokaji and I loved it, but that was 6 yr and this is 8 yr? Damn, I will be on the lookout for this. The Rio, I won’t hold my breath trying to score a bottle. Cheers Jason, go Phillies
Penelope is doing great things! That Tokaji finished rye is a favorite! The Rio is decent, respectable.

I like this year's Rio, for me it does have an interesting funkiness to it with the sweetness that I don't get on other amburana finished whiskeys
One of the biggest complaints with bourbon is that most brands taste exactly the same with just slight differences in the “vanilla and caramel” notes. I love what Penelope is doing. Penelope is the scotch of the bourbon world. Experimenting and finishing is crucial. Standard bourbons will always be available.
My real best too had way more vanilla on the nose and pallet and the amberana seem to be tamped down a little bit
I was able to purchase the cask strength Binny’s pick from last year. Unable to get the batch 1 because I was late on the game. I hope it taste as good as the batch 2. The Rio first release was at $200 so I passed. Regardless, cheer!!

I got a Rio and the nose and flavor is very good but I can have more than one pour! Is way too sweet for my liking but I want to have it with fry banana vanilla ice cream and Rio on top… weird but that’s what came to my mind while tasting it.

I find that I get cinnamon toast crunch from Amburana finishes
I like finished ryes a whole lot more than finished bourbons.
Drop these go with the light whiskey 15yr. Incredible!! Better than Starlight’s, tho it is half the age.
I won a bottle of Rio and thought it was good, not $200 to $400 good though. It's definitely unique. It's a touch too sweet.

I have had batch 1 , 2 and 3 of the Rio and just can't stand amburana. Love Penelope but both these bottles are a pass for me. The Tojkaji is ok and if it was poured for me I would enjoy it but not worth buying for me. The Rio I just cannot even finish a small tasting of it.
Had a food and Penelope tasting this past week with Penelope's brand ambassador (Wendy is amazing). It was so much fun and the whiskey was fantastic (well not the Rio lol)
My tope 2 Penlopes are still the 9yr and the Toasted Four Grain Barrel Strength
9 year is still my favorite too. Wendy is awesome

Which one should you choose? Hahaha like we can find either one of them. Lol. Isnt rio on batch 3? Batch 2 release went under the radar, and batch 3 came out a month or so ago. At least thats what i read.
I think it was a 2nd release of batch 1. The tokaji finish is definitely available
@@TheMashandDrum i heard it was a separate batch because batch 1 was so limited. What does the batch number say on your bottle? The tokaji is super hard to find, around here anyways. Stores around here (MA) are only getting a fee bottles of the tokaji and putting them in raffles. Its pretty limited as well. They actually got more of the newest rio than the tokaji

@@TheMashandDrum im not big into amburana either. There are some i like, but overall not so much. I actually had like 3 chances to buy this release but passed on it. Just figured id let you know so the viewers knew which it was. Still havent seen their tokaji which im dying to try since i love tokaji finish whiskeys. Keep up the good work you do. Cheers bud

Love you Jason but that batch 3 Rio is easily one of the worst whiskeys I’ve had. Didn’t even taste like whiskey it ventured into a bad cocktail as one gentlemen mentioned above. Keep killing it though!
Im with ya...Amburana is not my thing. I can somewhat stomach this one because of the honey.
Tokaji finish better for me. Rio has too much honey influence. I like RD1 Amburano wood finish better than Rio. But both of them great with cigars.

My buddy at our local liquor store saved me a bottle of this Rio thinking I would like. Dude! This stuff is gross. It ain't whisky. It's a nightmare of a bad cocktail. I will be greatly surprised if anyone in the bourbon group will favor this bottle in our next whisky share. I'm going to clothe myself in waterproof apparel in preparation of direct tomatoe flinging.

Stay away. This is not a good bottle. It was shared with the whisky group today and across the board no one liked it. There were some who enjoyed the earlier bottles that said this latest bottle stinks. I think the new mashbill they used for this new bottle completely ruined the idea. It doesn't belong in the category of whisky. It's a flavored liquor that has no destination. I wouldn't know what to do with this bottle.

I think $90 is way too much for what is basically Cinnamon Toast Crunch flavored whiskey. I've had both batches and just not my jam for the price.
Tokaji is in Hungry, not Germany.
yes I said hungary. But it was German winemakers who used the fungus (noble rot) to make reisling.
2 flavored whiskeys, hard pass.
