These fomies never cease to amaze me. You'll sometimes crash them hard and get little or no damage and other times just the opposite happens. She'll fly again no doubt.
speed is the secret to flying this plane well. I had stalls (full flap on) at the end of the landing and before the touch down, just like you. I tried to land with half flap on and it seems to work better. Greetings from Italy.
Hey Grampa, i use gorrila white glue for mine. It gets in those crefaces really well but you have to sit by it and wipe off the surface cause as it swells it trys to ooz out the sides but long as you get it before it starts to get tacky you cant even tell there was any glue in the first place. And that type glue is so light weight
Great job Gary. Say, I got a buddy that has 2 airplanes and a S2 cub, he was wondering what a safe bet would be to fly next after the beginner cub. He has the yellow Eflight Trojan 1.1 meter, and he also has an FMS 800 mm 550extra. Of the 2 birds what would you recommend for a next plane for a beginner to fly? Good luck on your viper.🤠
Nice flight ✈️, sorry for the wreck. I feel ya though, I laugh it off when I crash and I know I did it, but when I wreck and it was out of my control I get my feelings hurt lol. Can't wait it back in the air.
Love the channel buddy. As an avid fan of the viper and with a few hundred flights on mine let me say that it appeared to drop a wing which they’re notorious for at slow speeds. With your flaps fully down and at that speed I think it just stalled on ya.
That was not the wind, that was a classic tip stall, done it dozens of times myself, what you need to do is apply throttle as soon as it starts to roll and go around. Look at the flag at the end of the strip, it’s barely moving, for the wind to pick up that left wing it would have had to come from directly below. As for fixing, 30 min epoxy does the job for me every time. I’ve broke the wing on my Habu right in half and used epoxy and it’s strong as ever. I also reinforced across the break with several carbon fibre strips but that was only because the break was from leading edge to trailing edge and actually broke the fibreglass spar right in half.
Remember, don’t lament about crashing. If you’re not crashing you’re not learning. I’ve had over 1500 flights on my Habu STS and I’m still doing a lot of learning. Also, have alcohol wipes handy for wiping off excess epoxy on any repairs.
That was one of the best looking flights I've seen you do. It was perfectly in control. There's always a chance of the landing going wrong particularly if there is any gusting wind. Anyway that isn't bad damage. I usually end up with confetti!
Sorry, but flying the viper now for 2 seasons with more than 100 flights. But the landing speed was to low and plane stalled. Better land it without using the flaps, and keep the speed higher, it’s a jet and not a propeller plane 😊. Nevertheless the flight looks great, but keep the corner speed higher, to reduce the risk for a stall. Wish you many happy flights and landings!
When you have a cross wind, or even a gusty headwind, always use a little extra speed on final approach. On high performance aircraft, you fly the aircraft down to touch-down point. On aircraft like a Cessna, you do a flair as you touch-down, but not on a high performance aircraft. (I'm just getting into RC aircraft, but have over 1000 hours as PIC in real airplanes.)
Love the video! What do you use to video yourself without anyone to help? I have a very old gopro hero 3 and it's showing its age. The video results are not as good looking since it has limited recording modes. Thanks for sharing this! It could have been a combo of the air taking it and a slight wing tip stall. The damage doesn't look severe. You're lucky this time. I've been flying without incident for several weeks. I feel my time may be coming and I'm not looking forward to it!! Thanks Gary.
Don't feel bad GG. I had my cirrus out for it's 3rd flight. I was stoked because I upgraded my tx from the dx6e to the nx8. Had a beautiful flight. Was coming in bleeding off speed and full landing flaps. Cought the gear on the bean field that I have to fly over to land. Good thing was it hit the bean plants. Broke my prop and stripped out the nose gear/ rudder servo. So I was like ok no big deal. Got home to order my replacement parts from horizon hobby and low and behold on back order till December. I found them elsewhere but for 3 times the price. So that bird is in the hanger until.spring! All in the hobby lol.
dude! That’s a good one. Buy a new nose cone and your good to go! I bought a new nose cone and 2 fins. cheap fix and looks like new. i’m still flying the old nose cone and using the old fins I glued on but those are the kinda “crashes” I’ll take all day long. I left a plane on the ground in my basement and my wife left the 90lb german shepard down there. she crushed the tail on the night timber but it was only the hinges that pulled out so it was a easy fix but at first I was like Noooooooo!
Hey GPG, you mentioned earlier that there was almost no wind, and whatever wind there was, it was coming from the east. That type of weather pattern spooks me just for that reason alone. Not from the direction it comes from, but the fact that if you do not remeber to land from the opposite direction, those surprise gusts will bite you when you least expect it. It sucks that you crashed and I'm sure she will be in the air again soon. Great channel, I like that you keep it simple direct and to the point.
At 2:34 you came delta close to a wingtip stall... I notice you like "tight turns" with this EDF, it will bite you. There's a good reason why it's called the VIPER! EDIT: Back in repair mode once again, with you! This will be my 2nd fuselage for my Viper 90mm in 2 years. I just keep making the same rookie mistake of underpowering during tuns, the airspeed under the lower wing in bank falls too quickly to recover and by then I'm in a spiral looking at the ground. Anyhow, love the hobby! Off to my Avanti 80 V2 for a spell...
Good for you, I like your channel. That should be an easy fix. Hope you show that too. As my friend that R/C flying brought into my life and my original flying instructor often told me “they fly better that way“
the plane actually ballooned on you a little bit, stalled and started to spin. This is caused by this CG being back too far and I found with mine if I move the battery all the way forward, this just doesn't happen. Give that a try when you get it repaired and I think it will be a lot more stable for you.
Tough breaks, unfortunately crashes are part of the hobby and I don’t let them discourage me like they used to anymore as I’m sure you don’t either. I consider my pilot skills to be on par with where you are at, however, I have never flown an EDF. In your opinion will I need to go through the ranks with a Habu and so on and so forth or do you think I could jump straight into a viper 90-F16 80 with a cautious learning curve? My ego says that since I am confident on prop planes I should be fine with an EDF but I have no experience to base that decision on. I value your opinion but Am I being naïve?
The Viper handles the best and will be easier, maybe even more so than the Habu's. I'm not confident with the F16 yet. Just remember that EDF'S and any jet likes speed. Landings always require throttle up. My prop landings tend to be throttle off, so that is why I say that. 👍
So you think it’s doable but you’d recommend the Viper over the F16? I appreciate the response and the advice. I have a Flightline P38 lightning (great plane BTW) that requires some speed to land but I imagine the F16 would require even more than that, the Viper really seems as if it is a normal flying plane that just happens to be an EDF. Thanks again Gary!
@Matt Miller I think you have it figured out. Go with smaller 5000mah batteries. I know the longer flight times are desirable but you want the nose light for turns and the landing. 👍
Sorry to see that GG. it was a great flight and very nice landing approach . They're so susceptible at that last second before touchdown , No power and not enough airflow to make the surfaces work . And then the Grass . It's a blessing and a curse because you never know if it's going to roll or not . Not much you could have done IMO . Hope it's not to0 bad and back in the air soon for you .
Thanks Philip! When I watched the video back I noticed that the plane was trying to roll the same way on take off. I'll have to check the flaps and make sure the are hitting the same angle.
That's not a crash.............that's a rough landing. Every time I think I want an EDF.........I see videos likes this and say................yeah no.
Hey friend, dont let these types of things put you off. As much as it sucks, crashing is a part of the hobby. I dislike that praise very much, but it's a fact. Start of with a Habu or the HH F15. Both are beginner friendly.
First video I have been able to watch for the last couple of weeks and low and behold the Famous Inverted Loop just for me; Cartwheeled ending (at least the Gorilla Glue will put it back together) Great flight though

So sorry Grandpa Gary- approach looked perfect, then there was a slight roll to the left and maybe the crosswind hit you just as you corrected for that. Glad the damage was not too bad.
my viper 90 dropped a wing just like that when I got the nose too high on landing. I solved it by moving my 5000 back using the back two straps and now when I come into land I keep that nose down and don't over flare like you did and the wings don't drop like that on landing anymore...just my 2 cents! great jet once I figured that all I had to do was move that CG back and keep the nose lower on landing! good luck..PS I just noticed after I watched your entire video at the end...your battery way too far forward.
Just an observation - you mentioned roughly at 7:39 minute mark “Zero Throttle’” and you had not touched down yet - rule of thumb with jets in many tutorials ( I’m sorry I cant speak from personal experience yet - but soon I hope ) is that you don’t zero throttle until wheels have touched down completely … this could have contributed to the crash at the end. Just an observation . Cheers 😊
Thanks 👍 I believe so too. I was trying to get it on the ground as it was starting to travel to far away. But you are right, the stall occurred because of lack of thrust.
That’s impossible. I’ve had mine a year, tried everything stupid I normally do and this edf is like, “I got this Jeff. Why don’t you go sit your butt in shade.” It just recovers from anything in a quick and timely manner. Had FMS not come out with Futura v3 the Viper90 would be my favorite jet.

Thanks Greg! I love to fly my Eflite 80mm F16 but it absolutely won't be flown from grass so it has to wait until I travel somewhere with a paved runway. 😀🛩👍
flying over a crowd of kids playing cricket or soccer....bad move and unsafe, hate to see what the AMA would say in the event of a claim, but I doubt that you are an AMA member are you?
I had to rewatch the video. I can see why you thought I was flying over the guys playing Cricket. I'm very aware to not fly over others. There was two ball diamonds between me and the Cricket field. I was making very tight turns and never went that far over. I appreciate the concern and I will do better. 👍

On super hot days they bring their prop driven warbirds to the field, no EDFs.
BTW, the FreeWing F-4 is one beautiful plane and flys well.
Thanks Greg! I love to fly my Eflite 80mm F16 but it absolutely won't be flown from grass so it has to wait until I travel somewhere with a paved runway. 😀🛩👍
Do you not belong to a club that has a real field for flying?
I belong to a club several miles away but the grass field is actually way worse then this park.
yes you broke your nose cone but I wouldn't even classify that as a crash bro. I cant see it being your fault. I refuse to call it a crash.
I hear you. I just want sure since the wheels never touched. 😪
Wait a minute. The wind picked up and blew it over. Are you blaming the wind for you thumbing it in?
I think wind changed directions. I was landing with the wind and it stalled.
flying over a crowd of kids playing cricket or soccer....bad move and unsafe, hate to see what the AMA would say in the event of a claim, but I doubt that you are an AMA member are you?
I had to rewatch the video. I can see why you thought I was flying over the guys playing Cricket. I'm very aware to not fly over others. There was two ball diamonds between me and the Cricket field. I was making very tight turns and never went that far over. I appreciate the concern and I will do better. 👍
