- Natasha Kline's 'Primos' was set to be like any other standard kids' show until Twitter got its hands on it. What was so wrong with the show, and why was its reception online so explosive? Was it just clumsy, in the wrong place at the wrong time, accidentally racist or worse?

There is something deeply ironic about the voice actress harping on spanish for being a colonizer language while speaking english. Who brought english to the Native Americans? It's genuinely unbelievable she put that statement out without anyone telling her it was in bad taste.

It's stupid on multiple levels, if it's that bad then why put it in show in the first place?
The character “Cha Cha” and her design is the one design that rubs be the wrong way, the gap in her teeth, bugged out eyes, unibrow, outie bellybutton showing, and overall being a chaotic and destructive child, it bothers me a LOT. As an artist and character designer, it feels like they were intentionally making her seem “ugly” through racial stereotypes, along with her name being an insult in Mexican culture.
Both concept art and storyboards had a better design with a different name, so why did they downgrade so fast???

also, "latino" only makes sense north of the border, "latino" as an identity makes no sense in any latinamerican country
Right? I have a feeling that maybe their reason for this would be that its OUR fault for thinking ugly characters shouldn't be represented. But ugly designs can still be well-made, such as Hunchback of Notre Dame and Helga from Hey Arnold. I personally wouldn't go as far to say its racist, just Big Mouth levels of ugly.

After the VA's comments, this show really feels like a 3rd or 4th generation descendant of migrants who doesnt have a full grasp on the culture. A lot of what I saw is painfully stereotypical.

Personally I'd offer people like Kline the same advice as I would to people completely outside whatever culture they're considering basing a show on: get someone -fully- rooted in that culture to help you!
@@Truffs_Stuff Or at the very least, do your research. Some brilliant works have been made from outside its home culture. Many even have the blessing of the culture, such as the Ghosts of Tsushima developers being made honorary ambassadors of the real island of Tsushima.
Can confirm. There are many mixed kids who grow up ostracized from bith halves of their heritage and then take it out om everyone.
Of course they usually only get this way when they REFUSE to embrace either culture or are general assholes.
As for the names. Nacho and Nachito would make sense if Nacho was Nachito's father and Nachito was Ignacio Jr.

@Matias Definitely. I'm mixed with multiple heritage and while I wouldn't say I'm ostracised from all but one, I wouldn't call myself a part of them either. Bums out certain relatives, sure, but they're mostly used to it. Part of growing up is finding and taking accountability for yourself. If you take that out on others, that's just on you. Lends the whole 'mixed people are confused' stereotype more ammo though when people do 😕

Remember The Wild Thornberrys. That well written cartoon from the 90's about a girl who could talk to animals. Every episode took place in a different part of the world, and she'd have to figure out how to resolve all the issues the local animals had with eachother and the humans around them. God I miss good writing
Oh yeah, The Thornberries crew always made a lot of research not only to accurately show the animals featured in each episode but also for the people in different parts of the world. There's even an episode where they visited my home country, Argentina and I think they did a great job at that, probably the first cartoon that I saw where my country was heavily featured and not just a small reference

What the heck I didn't know the show was that deep LOL I only remember the movie but Eliza Thornberry was such an icon! And I agree, it was Nickeldoeon as well (back then, both Nickelodeon and Disney cared about their audience)
This entire fiasco made me realize how hard it is for newer generations to understand the cultures they descend from or even get a basic grasp on theyre history. Hell even I a predominantly Mexican American barely understand where I come from it's all so warped and skewed over the years I might as well not even be descendant.
Can definitely relate. As mixed heritage/2nd gen+ families become more commonplace, I think more and more people will feel distant from the cultures of their grandparents. Not necessarily a bad thing of course - nothing wrong with being of a different culture - but in a world (particularly the US with its X-American nomenclature going on) of monocultures, multicultural people often feel obliged to lean into certain parts of their forebears' heritage.
I see what they are trying to portrait but at that point those ase not latín Kids but full blown Americans and they need to embrace that, maybe then they would not need to do this racist claims to justify their train of thought
I'm Argentinean but my grandparents from my mother side were immigrants from Italy, though I never tried to reconnect with some sort of past heritage, I mean I eat plenty of Italian food almost every day, but it never cross my mind the idea of visiting the country (though the main reason is that I couldn't even afford it). I tend to notice that in the U.S. plenty of people who are the children or grandchildren of immigrants tend to put a higher emphasis on their roots, don't know if that's because of cultural differences, like in the U.S. there's a greater importance in expressing oneself. But I think most people in the rest of the world tend to assimilate much quicker and perhaps forgetting they had roots in another culture. I don't know if my father knew if his parents came from another country

I have no connection to those roots and I honestly don't feel the need to "claim" them. Look as someone who is half white and half Costa Rican American, I think a storyline for those of us who love our culture but was never able to feel apart of it because of our struggles to speak Spanish is something a lot of us can relate to.
But to insult the language itself is something I find absolutely absurd. There is a profound difference between making a grammar mistake because you’re learning and just being an asshole. Why you would choose to be an asshole is beyond me.
The other thing that bugs me is that I use English incorrectly all the time despite being a native speaker; often it's on purpose as a joke or it's just because that's how people actually talk. Naturalistic grammar (in this case, using the singular "oye" instead of the correct plural) is honestly fine so long as the point gets across. Even misspelled words can better show characterization if that's the angle you're going for. But to sit back and say, "It's fine that we're getting it wrong because it's the language of colonizers," is completely asinine. That was hundreds of years ago; we can't undo the damage that was done, but we can't ignore how things have changed either. Thousands of people aren't just going to revert to the first language that showed up in their geographical area, or use what their ancestors did, that's just pure stupid.

El asunto es que este español se ve modificado en cada país por localismos y su idiosincrasia. Aún con esto, todos estos dialectos son mayormente comprensibles. Sólo basta con reemplazar la palabra y se entiende.

My fiancé is Mexican (born in the US, raised in Mexico until the 2nd grade). He doesn't care about the stereotype at all as he lived with his family, 4 cousins, aunt and uncle- It's everything else with it. When I showed him that voice actress video it made him so mad. He had lots of colorful words bout her, but in short he said she doesn't know diddly and obviously doesn't care. We both hate the designs and have no interest in watching it. We haven't supported Disney in a long while now; my fiancé coming to the point he despises what Disney has become. Soooo sucks for the creator, but it dug it's own grave.

@@Obi7Haki He's not mad over the Spanish language. He's mad about her smugness and how she acts like she knows everything while she very much doesn't. Also what a lot of people don't know is there's different types of Spanish. I'm Hispanic and the Spanish my parents speak is different than Mexican Spanish. My parents and my fiancé's parents can still speak to each other just fine, but words can have different meanings. There's quite a bit of differences in the language depending the area in South America too. So it's not the language itself people are mad about, it's what this voice actress is saying and how she is saying it. There's a lot of lack of research about what the show is portraying. I can see having a character not know Spanish well and mispronounce things. I've been around Spanish speakers all my life and while I can comprehend a decent amount, when it comes to speaking it.. I'm awful 😅 So I understand. But that should have been made clear before the voice actress decided to sink the ship on the get-go.

If we look at this compared to say -turning red.
Turning reds cast and creators had a blast putting in their own stuff and experiences. 'Lets give her your nose!' So Mei gets these underrepresented characteristics and it's all so positive and lovely and relatable for not just those reprisented by mei's culture, but by her being a funny relatable teenage girl. Her personality is what defines her.
In encanto, their personality carrys them. In soul they add the barbers scene (which is important rep but underrepresented.)
But the very small bit we've seen of primos is bordering the "laugh AT these characteristics" side. . . Like there's the vibe of "oh, wouldn't it be funny to name that kid nacho" . ...

@@hassledvania they are preteen girls, so that’s probably by design. Though there’s a big difference between having a character made to annoy the other characters and having a character made to annoy the audience, and sometimes writers mess up and accidentally do both.
But Nacho IS an actual nickname. It's not a funny haha name. I agree the voice actress said very stupid ignorant statements but so is pretending Nacho is somehow a negative stereotype.

I’m a second gen Mexican American here who was raised mostly by my ‘white family’ so I don’t have the best grasp on Mexican culture and how Spanish is spoken in Mexico, but from what I’ve seen Mexican nicknames often describe physical characteristics, and even if they would be seen as rude to English speakers (like ‘fatty/chubby’), it’s not to them (of course you only use those nicknames for people you’re actually close with, like friends or family.) My dad calls my little brother ‘gordo’ all the time, he did for me when I was little too. Same with my tío. I was under the impression that these are the characters’ actual NAMES though, and not just nicknames, and that might be the issue for some people.

A couple extra points why this show sucks;
1. Tigers are shown 3 times in this intro, even though tigers are not part of Latino culture or are native to Mexico.
2. The 'Ugly Girl' is named Cha-Cha, which in some communities is used as a slur.
3. The sky is yellow/hazy, which is a stereotype with Hollywood/American depictions of Mexico.
Finally, 4. This is already talked about a lot, but the town is called "Teremoto Heights", which specifically means a strong Earthquake (which often kills 1000s of people), which is why people are relating it to calling a US town "9/11 City".
Long story short, I hate this show and will never watch it. Disney cancelled The Owl house and released this instead...

I saw a person around twt saying "what if we made a show abt gringos calling their city "school shooting mountain" huh?" it was pretty funny, but that's because earthquakes are devastating to most parts of the world. As a Chilean myself, raised by earthquakes and with obligatory earthquake proof buildings, it's still pretty tasteless to name the city like that.

Like naming some place "tornado city", "death valley" or the "dead sea", I'd say it just sounds like the name informs people of a prominent quality the place has, Just as a sort of warning.

As a Brazilian, I can't speak much about the language issue, because... surprise, Brazilians don't speak Spanish.
But as a Latina, this show do look like a show made by gringos for gringos.
Let me explain-The creator is clear second-generation, so she doesn't have the lived experience of the people talking about her show, she probably doesn't even understand what she was doing was bad or not, because, wanting or not, she has the assimilation to fight against.
BUT she and her crew should contact actual Mexicans, or even Latinos, they would have pointed out many things that she could have be more willing about to know.
It's not that hard, we live in a globalized world, but she and the VA live in a bubble, where they thought they were doing a great job, and now being kind of immature with the reaction of the people they thought were going to “adore it“.
My equivalent for Primos is Rio, Rio is a movie made for a USA audience in mind, and not Brazilians, even thought it's a movie about Brazil with a Brazilian director to boost, but it has all the stereotypes you would expect from Brazil.

I feel like if Disney made a series based off of Encanto, it would have gone over very well. Heck they could have given the owl house the extra season it needed. They had so many options other than primos.

Even if primos is by some miracle pheonominal the VA has made it hard for people to reccomend the show without "However" after it. Like most of the stuff is minor enough where it might offend twitter but for the most part would probably be easy to overlook, but now the va wanted to act like a smug arm chair activist she has scared away people who might MIGHT have given the show a chance

The owl house is another extremely overrated show, amphibia on the other hand, that show can genuinely join up with the big boys like gravity falls, adventure time and even over the garden wall.
With the ratings it might get, I would highly doubt that.

As a white passing Native American I get this all the time. While I'm officially mixed race, my family is all darker than me with the exception of one of my cousins that's just as pale. We often get called white saviors for simply defending our culture because we don't look Native. Truth be told my grandmother is a full blooded Apache Native and I can literally trace my ancestry to Geronimo like, I don't look the part but my genetics say otherwise. I have to specify at doctor's offices that my ethnicity is Native American because it's a deciding factor for medical decisions because I inherited all parts of the Native American genes minus my pigmentation, including the thick oily hair.
Honestly people like this piss me off. There is far more people that don't look their ethnicity but are and they don't deserve this treatment. Like let us live our lives plz. We don't deserve this bs. I can never hope to understand the struggles of someone of my tribe that is darker than me and the racism faced, but watching how my mom is treated for her dark skin is more than enough to hate these kinds of people

I've seen way too many shows and movies get their reputation tanked in the matter of mere moments because the show staff and actors couldn't help themselves on the internet. Antagonizing the Audience will never go down well.

While Dora the explorer is a nice cartoon that will help to grow bilingual childs by teaching a little bit of the other language doesn't matter if you watch the version for USA of for the Hispanic market, and even help small bilingual child's in USA to feel proud of that. This people from Primos are just showing that they are proud of not learning the language that is the real base of the culture that they claim to be representing. As a Colombian parent, I will NEVER EVER allow my child to watch a TV show with a main character called cuquita.
Encanto was really a work made with love, appreciation, and respect (especially when they touch the topic of the violence in the history of the country), but this is very forgettable work.
As a Mexican American 1st generation, I was going to give this show a chance but after what that VA said about how the Spanish Conquistadors forced the language just rubbed me the wrong way. That just made me not even watch the show at all. It’s true that they did that but through the centuries, we made the language our own. We all have our different type of words for different stuff and slangs and even accents. Spain Spanish and Latin American Spanish are very different.
We can't undo what's been done, but we can't ignore what's changed in the meantime either.
And the English language has literally done the same, it’s been forced upon the native Americans and every other place that the US have colonized (hello!! Puerto Rico!!! The literal last colony of the US that is STILL A COLONY TO THIS DAY!!!) like what is wrong with that woman?! It's not true that they forced the language. Most of the natives continued to speak theirs and Spanish was adopted only on a large scale after independence. During the viceregal era the natives had the option to learn Spanish voluntarily

I feel like the reason nobody really has an issue with Casagrandes from what I've seen anyway is that it's the spin-off show to another show about a very large family. So I guess it comes off less like "this Hispanic family has a lot of people living in the same place isn't that WACKY???" and more like "the main character of the spin-off has similar struggles to her friend in the main show and that's why they relate so well"

as a first gen mexican american, i have a lot to say.
to begin, i want to clarify to anyone that doesn’t come from a mexican (or other latin) household: although “gordita” does mean “fatty” in english, in spanish it is usually used as an “endearing” nickname for daughters and wives. it’s common for us to “make fun” of each other in ways that are not meant to go deeper than a nickname or a small joke.
i haven’t watched this show, and i don’t plan on it. but their nicknames would probably fit better if they gave the audience and episode to explain the cultural significance of these nicknames and gave us the characters real names.
secondly, the voice actress has to be kidding me. she seems so full of herself and is making it extremely obvious how she is using her gig in this show to feel more secure in her identity and her beliefs. again, not to wave it around, but as a first gen mexican american, speaking spanish is one of the many things that makes me feel connected to my heritage. and i feel that it is important to value and respect a cultures language when you are portraying them. i could understand if they also want to represent the thousands (if not millions) of latinos who are not fluent in spanish or have trouble with both english and spanish, but if they were, i don’t think she would have acted so high and mighty about it. yes, there are generations which have trouble with their mother tongue and some who don’t even learn it, but you cannot act as if no one in the town/family is fluent.
again, i haven’t watched this show, so if you have and you have any corrections, feel free to let me know.
Latin American people tend to use the most "unique" feature as a nick name.... it can be your height, nose, too skinny, overweight, skin color.... Most of the times there is not malice.... Just a term of endearment.... the intent is related with the "tone" in which you say something.
The name "Chacha" is a degrading way to call a cleaning lady btw. Everything else you are well informed.

I've seen the pilot. Apparently, the main girl character doesn't speak Spanish fluently and makes mistakes while writing and speaking. It would've been fine if the creators explain that it's part of her character. And it isn't an educational show which teaches you Spanish. But the creator didn't say that.
What bugs me the most is the art style and the designs. Is it mandatory that every Western cartoon makes its characters as ugly as possible? Their heads are larger than their torsos! And where's the variety? Another Disney show where a hyperactive girl is the main character. Isn't there another type of personality for the MC? Where are the boys, monsters, animals, aliens, etc.?

I mean yeah, Anne and Luz are two examples of overexcitable protagonists who are from underrepresented groups of people. This just makes me ask if the VA hates those shows.
It’s just the new style of this decade. Look at how Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon toons in the 90s looked. They all (to their respective channels) shared a similar style. Enough so they looked like they belonged in the same “universe”, with occasional exceptions like Zim or Ed, Edd and Eddy.
Today look how Steven Universe came into the scene and suddenly everything took on that style in some manner. It slowly became this.
Artistically it’s kind of a low key lazy way to crank out product in a way- “simple and colorful to play to dumb kids”.
I’m just praying a new and more appealing style will come along soon. Because a lot of these just turn me away at a glance.
But then maybe I’m just old and miss Cartoon Cartoon Fridays and cartoons that were like old friends: respectful to a broad audience that didn’t talk down to us.
I'm uruguayan and over here gordita or gordito is like a cute pet-name parents call their kids, however, it is extremely weird when anybody except your parents (and maybe your grandparents) use it to refer to a kid, like its not a common nickname and is used to insult people

Also Uruguayan here! At least in my house hold, only parents and grandparents call their kid/grandkid gordito/a. And probably a very attached aunt/uncle. Never from siblings or cousins tho. Im still called gordita or "pochita" (similar to gordita) even tho im a little older than a kid lmao but, again, only by my parents and grandparents. I haven't heard of it as a name tho, that is what is kind of weird to me

As a Chilean I find the fact that they named it 'Earthquake heights' both absolutely horrible and hilarious.
I personally tired of this type of art style. And I personally DESPISE storyline where a kid can’t have fun because they need to babysit or entertain their siblings our cousins.
I know a lot of kids live like that but that’s just too depressing for me. Kids should not raise kids sacrificing their own childhood. Parents should raise younger kids and let older kids explore life in their free time.

I have no problem with Nacho and Nachita as names. Nacho and Nachita is just a nickname for Ignacio and Ignacia respectively and it is pretty common to hear kids being called that. The creator of nachos, the dish, was called Ignacio, so the name stuck for the dish as well.
Nacho is indeed a pretty stereotypical name for a Mexican kid and they could’ve been way more creative than that, but otherwise there’s nothing inherently wrong with it.
Also, Cuca is just a name in Mexico, it only means vagina in South America.
Also also, it is pretty common to nickname thin people “gordo/gorda” and fat people “flaco/flaca”, it’s normally used as a term of endearment rather than it being mean spirited. Mexican nicknames can be fucked up sometimes, but they’re culturally not seen as mean, but harmless teasing and terms of endearment.
The only real problems I have with this are the wonky grammar, the yellow skies, the shoes on the power line and the VA’s white savior complex, despite her not being white.

I mean even if it's an innocent name in Mexico, the creators needed to bear in mind that this show would air in the US. Which has a very large South American population. That includes children, whose parents probably won't want them watching a show where a recurring character is called "p*ssy" in their home dialect. You probably don't want to alienate a large portion of your audience like that off the bat

Here in Mexico, there was a museum expo about the trips Walt Disney and his team (Mary Blair, etc.) made to Latin America. They made a huge effort to get to know our cultures and create great content aimed at us. Now we have this inept woke creators who call us racist for pointing their racism, Disney company has fallen to the lowest point I've ever seen.
Funnily enough, the term "Latin America" comes from a colonial nation, specifically France. Napoleon III wanted to build a new French Empire because his grandpa was such a badass. Anyway, he saw Central and South America as the perfect fruit to pick, however attacking Mexico would probably provoke a response from the United States and the British Empire. As a result, he called the Spanish speaking regions of the Americas "Latin America" because Spanish is a Romance language, while English is a Germanic language. Therefore, Napoleon III avoided provoking the Americans and British, although Napoleon's new empire never came to fruition. Also, since French is a Romance language, Quebec is part of Latin America. More importantly, using Latin America to describe Central and South America means that you're using a term from the colonizers. Hell, "America" comes from Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer, and it was first used by a German cartographer. Both are Europeans, therefore colonizers, so we need a new term for the New World. Oh wait, that's also from colonizers. Now that I think about it, the name for Earth came from the Germans, who are European, therefore colonizers.

My dad has a Latino coworker/friend who goes by Taco as a nickname (his full name is Ricardo I think) but yeah, the names for these characters are still pretty bad, especially if those ARE their names and not just nicknames.

In latinamerican culture “gordo/a” and “gordito/a” are used as playful or affectionate terms for family members. Despite the meaning, its not considered offensive in those contexts. However its not something that translates well to other cultures.
It’s not inaccurate, but its also not something you want to put in a show that will likely be many non-latino children’s first introduction to Latin American culture.

The thing that surprised me the most is the grammatical error IN THE THEME SONG, how such a major detail went that far? If they said "yeah we now, they are like 3rd generation so they bearly speak Spanish" i would get it but no.

The fact that 2 characters are named Nacho, 1 character being named a slang for female genitalia, and 1 character being named a literal slur (Chacha is a slur in Mexico) somehow got past Disney astounds me.

Something I find interesting is how all of the cultural issues somehow managed to slip past the team and into the final product-like I'm an animation student, the crew for animated shows are HUGE with the amount of departments and eyes on the project, with how fast the internet pointed out the problems the show had someone on the team must've noticed them too, so either there was no one with the knowledge of Latino culture to notice them, or if they were brought up those concerns were ignored. (see Alex Hirsch's post on how many issues Disney's S&P department had with Gravity Falls, like with how throughouhly that show got scrubbed at times it's very odd this show got past the checks)
This show could have slipped by with a little hiccup and then nothing else, as you said a mid but not bad program.
But the voice actress had to literally strap a gas can to a box of C4 then detonate it by bringing up colonization and ethnic psychobabble, the topic was a slight grammatical error something that can be addressed, fixed, or tweaked to just be resolved but no no no "Fuck ze colonizer and fuck all of you I'm better" was the first thing the woman jumped to. Dios mio.

I agree it is mostly because of the PR. A lot of things in the content shown about the show itself can be brow rising but people were going overboard because, well, Disney has gathered a bit of an overall reputation and this show got caught at the current tail end of it. It was always gonna be on thin eyes. I think it could live with most of the content-related things pointed out, and despite the "no research was made" part, I think the author of the series has handled things not that badly.
The VA is the one that definitely dropped the ball. Here's where I do disagree with something: I think she by all accounts will have to be replaced. The amount of bad faith she caused is not accidental and is past mistakes excusable by just ignorance. Even if she left it'd still be a show with doubt about how many other staff members think like her, and it'd still look like a product by the numbers with a lot of things to nitpick that can add up.... Her hebavior is just unreal and I actually feel bad for the author's sake a bit because of the trainwreck this VA caused.

Clarence’s character designs have some charm to them, like it can tell off a characters personality just by their shape language, like you can tell Clarence is the kind kid because he has lots of circles in his design
