    If I'm still using my GH5S from 2018 to 2024 then trust me BM 6K is totally great. Cinematography isn't about switching gears every time, it's about learning the balance between the technical and the creative.

      @@SidKillz-zf2du BMD does this from time to time. They offer steep discounts on gear for short periods, presumably to clear retail and warehouse space for new stock. The most famous discount was probably the OG Pocket Cinema Camera (50% off). The sale lasted a few days, then it was gone - the camera never retailed for that price again. The BMD website says the BMCC6k offer is limited. 🙂

    This channel is criminally underrated. I’ve been going back and forth with this camera and the S5 II, and I think I’m starting to lean BM. This would be my first ever camera, and I’d like it to graduate with me from personal narrative shooting, and more commercial like shooting in the future. Thanks so much for all your hard work that goes into making these videos. Obviously Subbed!

    No open gate? Why? Almost everything I shoot uses OG even though I will crop to DCI or 16:9 afterwards. In my mind it’s about having reframing options. If the talent moves in an unexpected way you have room above and below to adjust in post. And sometimes you get into the edit and the shot that looked perfect on set, doesn’t feel right in post. Again, you can shift the framing in the vertical to fix for instance eye line issues that weren’t figured properly on the day. OG provides so much more flexibility for essentially zero cost. Highly recommended.

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  8 місяців тому +9

      Well I was doing the OG and thinking the same with reframing post. But maybe it's just me but shooting OG makes me frame different, even down to the little things like they might be a light on a roof that's never guna to be in edit, yet av exposed with it in mind. I just find framing 16:9 for 16:9 works better.

    Regarding the OG, it was the main reason i switched from the 6k pro to the 6k ff and from every shoot that i did since i got it last year (around 15 or so), just one of them was not at OG and just 3 of them were using anamorphic. Being able to reframe in post, or even better, being able to deliver ar OG 3:2 (or even 4:3) is such an awesome and different look because you get a lot of different feeling as well as characteristics from your lenses, especially if you are shooting with vintage glass.
    I was tempted to get the pyxis as well which does solve the biggest problem that i have with the 6k ff which is powering it with the weipu cable, which i absolutely hate where this connection is. In the pyxis you will have a much cleaner and safer option for sure. But other than that, i think the side monitor is not as versatile as the one on the 6k ff as well as having only one sdi out is kinda of a bummer, if they used a sdi for the evf this would make more sense for my use.
    I'll wait for a pyxis mk2 with better framerates and even internal nd, than i might switch my 6k for it !

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  8 місяців тому

      If I could deliver in opengate, I'd deffo capture in open gate but that's such a small amount of project. I find exposing items such as lights on the roof/celling on a wide opener, and then You frame the roof out later in the post just don't make sense, when the lights will never be in the edited timeline. Also no matter how much I try I also frame for OG if my monitor shows OG, if it shows 16:9, I frame for 16:9.

    with open gate i think its more like, a flexibility IF needed, and a preference of looks, i personally like the look of open gate. And with the Pyxis release i do think there are perks to both this and the pyxis.
    The BMCC is affordable and easy to use for most people as it has a DSLR style body, and had a really familiar and simple layout.
    The Pyxis is for more rigging, higher end productions that still want to save some bucks. It is made to fill the spot that an FX6 could fill, but at a cheaper price and with different options

    Peace! The 6K Full Frame release was BMD’s attempt to get to market quickly with a full-frame sensor.
    This was shared by a BMD Rep at NAB, which can be found online either by Cined or Newsshooter. I don't remember.
    My assumption is BMD was developing the Pyxis when they released the 6K Full Frame. However, the Pyxis wasn't ready.

    I am primarily an audio production guy, I do lots of recordings of recitals and concerts with the focus being on audio capture, those are often in recital halls with an illuminated yet still slightly dark stage with a dark hall or outside at night, I got a Canon r8 and have found that it is working well and I'm looking to add a second camera that I can put stationary in place while I do other shots with a the R8. So 2 questions if you or anyone is willing to answer. First, would those situations not be appropriate as you mentioned this camera is not very low light friendly? Also I shoot outdoors during sunset into night with the temperature getting as high as 95 degrees, will it overheat? The canon r8 suffers terribly from overheating unless I mount a fan to it. Great video I am definitely subscribing!

    Personally we think that the Blackmagic 6K Pro or any of the pocket cinema camera range is perfectly suited for run and gun style doc shooting, not outfitting with huge cages and other video production paraphernalia. This is not where it shines for these cameras. These cameras are very ergonomic for hand held shots (using a pro camera) and once they are outfitted with all of this "stuff' they loose this key feature of a camera which is fast to use while on the go. With the the 6K Pro you can shoot from the blazing sun of the Sahara to the night markets within (as but one example but not limited to -of course) any South Eastern Asian country without any problem and deliver 6K quality. They are simply not great at studio work and Box type cameras have always had the upper hand here. We use the 4K G2 for shooting wildlife and "scientific stuff" and by way of comparison (you can't LOL) talk about the pros of the 6K Pro Vs an example "box style" camera. Where these cameras shine is of course lowlight to no light LOL. We shoot in mostly low light

    As the S5II/X and the Blackmagic Cinema Camera (and the Pyxis) all use the same Sony sensor you can get a extremely similar image if you record RAW on the Lumix cameras with the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. So yeah, you can get a extremely similar image in BRAW that takes almost no effort at all to match but with great AF, you do ofc lose a lot I/O and also form factor compared to the Pyxis for example though. Different tools for different jobs ofc but good to keep this in mind when deciding between these.

      @@RafalGendarz No, that is not att all how RAW video works. MOV, MP4 etc are containers and H.264, ProRes 4:2:2 etc are codecs. RAW is RAW sensor data that is later encoded into different type of RAW formats and as it's RAW sensor data you can change the color space and gamma from Panasonic V-Gamut and Panasonic V-Log into Blackmagic Design and Blackmagic Design Film inside the Camera RAW control in DaVinci Resolve Studio for example which would end you up in the same place more or less. Takes no time at all to match the two cameras :)

Originally, was going for the Broadcast G2, but kind of tired of dealing with crop factor and I've been shooting more handheld lately and carrying an Ursa just seems to be a bit much. 6K open gate for vfx shots is great since I can have more points for camera tracking instead of being limited to wide lenses. Regarding the Pyxis, we need to keep an eye out for how camera monitor makers respond to the USB-C connection. In theory you could buy a USB companion monitor from Amazon (tough to rig of course) and have a huge camera monitor for under $100.00 US. And even with higher fidelity panels and a rigable frame, the cost of camera monitors is going to come way down. Plus, you won’t need additional power no monitor batteries or power cables. I will probably get a pix for my kit, but honestly, I’m more curious about the next generation Ursas. Certainly, they will build a single screen variant with only CFExpress.

    Form factor has been my biggest gripe with Blackmagic since the first Cinema camera. They never seem to get the Design 100% right. And with the PYXIS they are still not quite 100% there yet. It's a step in the right direction. Looking at the Komodo, ZCam and Lumix. They're so much smaller. It seems like BM sacrificed the box shape just to be able to put their touch screen on the side. The shape makes it so much harder to put on a gimbal. It's more like a slimmed down version of the Ursa mini in my opinion, than a boxed shaped 6k FF Cinema camera. I would rather have no screen to be honest. A 6k version of the Micro Studio camera. That's why I will wait for the PYXIS G2. That hopefully fixes a lot of my issues. They have proven now that they're actually trying to make a camera that addresses the publics feedback. I own a pocket 4k, Pocket 6k pro and an Ursa mini 4.6k.

Pyxis seems kinda dead on arrival. You’re probably looking at the price of an fx3 or r5c once you rig it out and those cameras not only don’t need rigging but have ibis and af with usuable low light and don’t lock you into shooting braw.

    Also, BlackMagic's "raw" is NOT raw. They admit this in their own whitepaper. ProRes Raw is a true raw codec. I'm not saying BMD's isn't a good codec, but calling it raw is unfortunate bullshit that harms their credibility.
