Grew up with my Dad doing custom upholstery in his 1 man shop. So many memories. I wished Id learned more from him when he was alive. Thanks for the smiles when I watch you work.
Hello Mrmja, Memories... I love hearing these stories. Thank you so much for your kind words. Please keep liking and watching!
Absolutely awesome to watch a pro in action. Just starting my 1966 Charger seat rebuilds and just watching this one video was immensely valuable. Most people today don't recognize the skill... but I do. Thanks for posting.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words, I'm blushing! I am so happy if you can use this information. You can do it!
Thank-you! The hacksaw blade was great advice, made very straight cuts with it. It was also great for making long wedge & sloping cuts.
Great to hear! There is nothing like grabbing that hack saw blade and trying for yourself! Way to go!
I am subscribing! Old school can be the best as a service apprenticeship in a 2 man shop from a high school that didn’t even have a shop class or auto. But an ASE Master Tech since 1978 at a dealer with 8 tech’s and the service mgr couldn’t get anyone to take one test, much less 8.
Self taught in patterns to sewing after my wife took classes with her sister, I had to help with home work. Sewing is rewarding but one must pay attention to margins, measuring and just planning the panel. The rest is knowing you machine and execution of “Best Practices” for the stitch. You made reference to a jig-was blade but looks like a clean hack saw and never thought of trying one. Very cool. When the foam is not dead, I like glueing burlap on the seat frame channel, foam side first to add strength. Just a common sense move if new is not in a budget or not available. Enjoy the learning! Thanks for sharing!
What an awesome story! Thanks for sharing. It is so nice to share experiences!
Any man that says sewing is for woman just doesent have a clue!" Lol I never thought id ever be saying that " bahaha
@@blowme5150 I am sewing leather for the doors, console I made and the seats I cut & heavily modified from a 2003 Tahoe! Ever weld anything? If not, it is fun to watch! Bahahaha!
Like grandpa said; Their is an ass for every seat!
Oh, did you become an ASE master tech or did you pay someone to take all 8 test with 60 questions each. L1 is 100 questions: I missed one. It is advanced emissions control, or are those words too big!
Thank your for the video ,I've a 1966 mustang to do some seats ,this video is excellent reference...
Awesome! I hope this has been helpful to you!
You’re the most helpful I have found on UA-cam! 😉
Thank you for your kind words! Please keep watching!
You da man, Rudolph! Great video, thanks!
Wow! You are so welcome. Thanks for the kind words! Please keep watching!

Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words! Thank you for the subscription! Please keep watching!
Cool 👍 respect
Thank you very much!
I use an electric knife to cut the foam ... how long can you keep the glue in the spray gun? ... you have one of the better upholstery sites on youtube in my opinion ...
Hello Joe, Thank you for all your kind words! It will take a long time before the glue goes bad in the spray gun. Extreme heat and cold will speed it up though. Please keep watching!
1:35 they look to be alternating in a pattern, I don’t know if you address that later in the video… but it’s one larger pleat, two larger pleats and repeat. 🤙
Hello KKD, I don't think it was intentional for the person to make non-identical pleats. I see now that is obvious. Like I said, sometimes people just do the best that they can. Please keep liking and watching!
Hey there, great video! You've got some serious knowledge. I'm working on this project, fixing up a weight bench specifically for bench pressing/lifting weights, and I'm kind of lost when it comes to choosing the right foam. Any advice on what kind of foam I should be looking for? Your input would be a big help. Thanks a bunch!
Hello Jay, Thank you so much for all of your kind words! Low density and firmness are for comfort. High density and firmness are for support. I would think you would need a higher firmness for your project. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Sure thing! One more question: should I factor in foam density and compression? I came across an online source suggesting that 2.5 pounds density and 36 pounds compression should work. What are your thoughts on this?
@@jayabner8423 Hello Jay, sorry to say that I never get technical with foam numbers. I don't hurt my brain with the rocket science. I just go to my upholstery supplier and "Feel" the foam. That is how I get my answer. You see what I mean now? See this video ua-cam.com/video/-ylXt_hIgU8/v-deo.html Please keep liking and watching!
Damn! I just installed my new foam cutter blades in my Bosch and I’ll be damned if I didn’t snap the long plunger inside.
…lol… I just cost myself a hundred bucks. I can’t weld this thing. It’s too tiny. I fixed my steamer too. It’s still broke. …lol… omg 😂
Hello Alfred, Watch out, things happen in threes! Time to be Mr. Fix-it! Please keep liking and watching!
Any uploads on 240Z seats?
Hello Truth, Nope. I did those decades before UA-cam. Really there was a standard design for car seats in the 1960's and 1970's. They were all very similar. Please keep liking and watching!
I see in the back ground you like jets
Hello Fayton, In the mid 2000's, I was a manufacturer in China. You can learn more about that in my bio here: www.rudolphsupholstery.com/rudolph-s-virtual-museum Please keep liking and watching!
I was a journeyman trimmer for 10 years in the 79’s and 80’s. If I ever saw another hog ring it would be too soon. Lol. Are you still called “trimmers?”
Hello Fire, I used to be called a trimmer decades ago, Not sure if the name has changed like everything else. Thanks for watching!
Great video. So does the foam get attached with hog ring pliers or is it just glue ?????
Hi! Thanks a bunch! I use glue to attach the foam. Foam to the burlap. See you around!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Thank you

Can you remove one need on a double needle machine and just use one needle when you only need one? Thxs
Hello Dell, I have never used a double needle machine in 44 years. I am old school. I suppose that if you removed a needle, only one needle would sew. Please keep liking and watching!
Thank you
@@dellmack1 Hello Dell, You are so welcome! Please keep liking and watching!
Never done work like this, but I'm going to DIY reupholster the front bench seat on my 1964 Comet. Should I use high density foam for my fat butt? I weigh 250.
Hello Blister, I think you will do just fine on your project. I like 1964 Comets. High density is fine, but you may want to put a layer of cotton or Dacron over the top for more comfort. Please keep liking and watching!
What kind of foam is that ? Thanks
Hello Stream, I usually use a medium density foam for most things. Please keep liking and watching!
what kind of foam is the white foam? i’m just now learning upholstery, and i’m just curious what type of foam is used for this. also what are you using to cut it with? thanks
Hi! Basically, there are three densities for upholstery foam. High, medium, and low density. Most projects will use a medium density. Also, the way to measure is not by squeezing the foam between your fingers. The way to measure the density is to place your hands on each side of the foam like praying hands and push your hands together. Learning by doing! Go for it!
Nice video
I have a couple of questions
first what kind of tissu / textile you were using to rebuild under the foam
also what was the stampler / tool you were using from 3:07 to 3:40 for fixing the felt and the tissue to the frame ? what kind of glue you were using for the foam ? and finally to which supplier can I get the stampler ?
I'm repairing my own 1965 Baracuda as an amateur and wish to do a effective job
Thank you very much !
Hi! I think that would be Burlap, then Jute pad. The tool would be hog ring pliers. Use a good construction-grade contact adhesive that can be bought at Home depot. The other tools and materials can be bought at an upholstery supplier. That 65 Baracuda will be a nice car when you're done!
Can you share the specs of the foam you used?
Generally, you can ask your supplier for light, medium, and high-density foam. Older cars are most likely medium density. Newer cars have a high density for a stiffer seat to keep a better shape. Thanks for checking!

Did it to me again. Same as the comment from another video.
Finish the seat... where is part 2 to this video?!
This video is about re-foaming a seat. This was completed in this video. There is nothing more to re foam...
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Can a new seat cover just over over the top of this and it will give it shape? Or do you have to further shape the foam? Incredible work btw. Your channel is a wealth of knowledge.
