I think Eriksson was the reason. He lived off that famous 5-1 victory against Germany. If you look at the way they exited two World Cups when he was manager, it was limp. He was a little star struck by the players.
On paper that team was the best England side for decades- but somehow they just didn't reach their potential in the World cup- thinking of that freakish Ronaldhino goal that did for them in 2002.
Paul Robinson was just epic in this match. The hunger in Argentinas eyes was so evident. But alas, they got smashed up by the Golden generation. Hoorah
its such a shame about michael owen. we never truly got to see him at his prime. He was only 23 when he got that career ending injury against sweden, he was not the same player after that, he couldn't run in behind defenders, he lost his pace and simply wasn;t the same. He could have been one of the greatest strikers to ever live if he hadnt landed so badly in that game. He was a true great who never got to show the world what he had.
