Happy to be posting again, got lots of work done in the garden this spring! For the foreseeable future I am aiming to post once a month (unless we have a sponsor), in the hope of focussing on quality over quantity. Weekly posting is no longer sustainable for me, I’m sure you all understand ❤
My Grandmother had a small farm not too far North from you. 2 acres was the average back in the 70s. Some had larger plots of land but the average was 2 acres. One milk cow that was milked every morning. 2 pigs that ate ALL the scraps and in the Fall , filled the SALT BOX for the year. 2 lamb for Christmas and the holidays. And Chickens for eggs and meat. I remember working the fields with her and family. Vinyards draped the whole perimiter of the property , 1000 liters red wine every harvest.Wheat, Potatoes Tomatoes. Padron Peppers, green beans, faba beans ,carrots. Lettuce, Wheat For bread cabbage. Onions.watermelon, Garlic . Oh and CORN, CORN EVERYWHERE. CORN was the staple food for the animals , the tops were cut to feed the cows while they were growing. Water was kept in man made holdings and shared by everyone . HARVEST time everyone help their neighbor and family. Family usually lived next to you , aunts , uncles , cousins. At harvesting ,big baskets of food were eaten by all on the field with blankets and children playing . It was the best time of my life , no running water but we had buckets. After the Wheat was harvested the hay was then stacked onto a large POLE on a wood platform that kept it off the ground like a large FAT GOLD TREE. . My grandfather was killed in the SPANISH CIVIL WAR so my GRANDMOTHER was a one woman band withva little help from neighbors and family... Incredible time on this planet.. I wish you all the happiness and the fruits of your labor. ❤🍷
I am Linda from Australia and I have been watching your videos for a year now and love them. I love how you are so honest with everything and not scared to share your failures. We all have them. Also was so heartened when you revealed your struggle with depression. Thankyou !! Many of us have the same struggle. You are so beautiful inside and out. ❤
I’ve just discovered your channel. Need a lot of catching up. Thank goodness to see one till the land to plant a garden. I grew up in Virginia, USA and that’s how we did it. Been in Texas for 60 years and still plant that way. The children are precious and blessed to grow so free and outside.🎉
I am so happy to see you posting again. The kids have grown since we last saw them. And your husband looks so handsome with his new haircut. Handsome dude indeed. Lots of love from Florida.
Thank you for useing the american language as we have people here in the USA that refuses to speak our language . God bless you familey at my 82 years i watch alot of videos. Robin Frazier liberty texas usa
Wonderful to see you again! Seems that the period of rest has nourished you - nothing in nature can do without some rest, and we are part of nature after all, aren't we. Here's to a fruitful new growing season!
I agree the tilling that you do for your garden beds works well don't let the different opinions get you bombarded with get you down your progress is great to watch ✌️✌️👍
Thank you so much for this window into your daily life. In Oz we are going into winter and the depression that goes with it. It is the shut down season unlike spring when the warmth brings hope and new life. I love your blue chickens, I've never heard of or seen them before, I too was surprised at their indifference to the cabbage leaves, never mind they'll be perfect for the compost heap. Do you plough your old crops back into the soil? Its wonderful to see your children helping with the gardening, they'll grow up to be knowledgeable and self sufficient in a world where their future is an unknown. That sounds rather morbid but isn't that one of the reasons for your move to Portugal? Anyway thank you again for the vid and the shots of nature that surround you. Love and best wishes from Fran!!🥰💕👍💪👨👩👧👦🐕🐔🐔🐔🌱🌼🌿🥔🥔🥔🍇🍅🍆🫑🥒🥬🧄🧅🫖
I feel you on the dread of winter! I think the chickens have different names in different places, but I really like them so far :) Don't till much of the old crop back in, only roots of beans and such. Maybe a little morbid, but definitely realistic in my book. Indeed one of the reasons we left the Netherlands, being under sea level didn't feel right anymore ;)
English: It's nice to watch you live there and I admire your patience and perseverance. I have been following you for a few years now. It pleases me and it entertains me when I watch you. I myself live on a small farm in Sweden and know how much work such a business can be, especially if you have no previous experience in it. Best regards, Sven from Sweden.
Glad you are feeling refreshed after the winter break. The power of natures healing, listening to your own needs and doing what feels right for you will benefit all the family. Taking a step back and taking time out and away from the stress of utube was obviously necessary in your priorities so we welcome you back and wish you and all the family health and contentment with your wonderful life in beautiful Portugal.
Good morning from South Africa 🇿🇦. Our Forefather left Holand France for Africa 1665 I think and we still here 😀. It was not a easy journey for them. But God is with us we can't be stopped. God Bless you all you strong and Recilliet lot's off turmoil in ghe 🌎 my Sons lift Africa and live in USA more than 25 years and other one in NZ. Stay safe and enjoy your life
So wonderful to see your channel back on...we love to watch you and Martin build a life for you and the children....love you guys and don't listen to any negative feedback...Ron and Diane
Welcome back. Glad you took the time you needed. I can appreciate UA-cam and the hard work that goes along with it. And thanks for the short so we wouldn't worry
You have done so much work.. It's great to see you all again.. Honestly if you don't feel like posting as much we understand.. Just let us see you when you can.. We love your vlogs
Like the haircut covid has made barbers of a lot of us. I'm not sure, fortunately or otherwise, he's satisfied, and I'm now the barber. I always enjoy your choice of music. Good to see you back.
So wonderful to see you back and looking so refreshed. I wanted to tell you that allowing yourself the time to film and edit without the pressure has shown in the quality of this video. Great music choices and nicely put together. Although I will watch no matter what I wanted to recognize your efforts.
You make me jump everytime I see our NZ 'KINGS SEEDS" in your hands. GOOD WORK - Good food - Good children, growing fast - good hens fit so well with home growing. Many Thanks for sharing.
Glad you are feeling better..thought you got a new husband😂 Didn’t recognize Martin with short hair…agree, not all gardening methods work for everyone..though you have too many projects, here are a few things to consider: save old chicken bedding for compost- very high in nitrogen, gather dead leaves in late fall and bury in your garden trenches- will preserve moisture and provide some nutrients, plant tomatoes up to their necks, but strip all leaves up to their necks first, plant ornamental grasses sound perimeter of your garden- these can grow 10 feet and once dead and dry, use these for straw, and a GREAT plant for bees, if you can get it is African Blue Basil, bees love it, it is edible, grows and bloom til frost..plant in greenhouse to draw pollinators, easy to propagate, just cut off a branch, put in glass of water, wait 10 days, will have develop roots, replant….love the blue chickens😊
Wow Lea you are such great worker your green house is beautiful and the sprinkler system will help so much. I see Martin cut his hair. Congratulations on that. with your chickens, you should get some kind of water system in there. I know they have bottles that can drip real big bottles cause there’s not enough water for those poor chickens in the heat. Well you’re doing great great to see you and your family again love from the United States.

Lovely to see you again Leah. Missed your videos. I look forward to your posts once a month. You have a very busy household and have a lot to do. I can imagine it is difficult to balance gardening, housework, taking the children to school etc etc. You and Martin look more relaxed with the time you took off to charge your batteries and I am glad that you are taking it a bit easy. I wish you a very good harvest for 2023. What a beautiful sunset and what beautiful blue chickens. Martin I like your hair cut. Till the next video. Take care.
Happy to see you back with videos. Puck and Beau are fun to watch in the garden. They seem to like to help. You are teaching them good life skills. Great to see flowers all over.

I'm very happy to see that you are ok. Being a mum, a farmer, keeping sane through winter, making videos to publish etc etc etc. Is mentally and physically taxing. I'm so happy that you took a rest. Xx lovely garden!
Nice to see the whole family again and good to see you survived winter ❄️ now just how standard are blue chickens because I had never heard of them 😁 another reason to just come here to learn something new 🤓 no need for google 🌸 groetjes 🌸

I love that little tiller of yours! So useful... just imagining doing all of this work by hand...
Yes we love our little tiller. We don’t have to imagine doing all the work by hand, because that is what we did before haha.
It is so nice to see all of you again! I am glad everyone is doing well. Have a wonderful week! ❤💛💚💙
What a nice winter!

Great to see you guys back! The little ones have grown so much! One of the only "PT Farm UA-camrs" I still watch. No super fancy equipment, no huge piggy banks and million-euro incomes. Just simple people living simply, making do and living happily. I find it hilarious how "bigger" channels whine and moan about the smallest of little issues, especially when they have the means to acquire or otherwise have EVERYTHING they could possibly need or hope for. Or, conversely, the gatekeeping and dogmatic thinking from these new-age hippies who cling to regurgitated (often incorrect, or incorrectly applied) information as if it were some bible.
You guys seem like the real deal and I wholeheartedly welcome you and your beautiful family to this little corner of Portugal.
Wishing you guys a cool and pleasant summer, with bountiful harvests :)
Oh - and a quick tip - tomato plants HATE getting their leaves wet!
Thanks! Oef, I have lots to say about other channels but I'll keep it to myself for now 😂 Let's just say I think we agree on a few things .
Hello from Canada 🇨🇦 love your videos super interesting great job.
Looking good! Take care of yourself and family!
Good for you charting your own path with your gardening techniques. It looks like your crops are good!
What a beautifully cultivated life you are creating for your family ❤️
You are absolutely correct about gardening dogma. We are 71 and have gardened in a variety of areas. Every area and soil seems to need a different approach for success.
Very good video,my first time watching your family,it was good to watch the children helping you plant.Maybe you could give the children there own wee patch of garden to watch there plants growing.Just a thought.🌺🌺🌺❤️
Glad you liked it :) I think next season our oldest will be ready for her own garden
I didn't realize how much I have missed your videos until I watched this one. Glad you took time off though.
Thank you for sharing 💞✌️
Try to cultivate the Buffalo grass or other nomow grass around your garden patch. Overtime, slowly but sure you will see the great benefits. Buffalo grass is drought-resistant and also able to resist the cold. Great journey, wish you all the best!

Wonderful to see you sharing again. Children are getting big. Gardens are looking encouraging. You have done a tremendous amount of work on the garden prep. The new chickens are a great addition. Peace and blessings to all. ❤❤
Good to see you all back 😊
I love your videos, they always remind of what’s important in the world and the life I want to make for myself! Thank you!
Hope you do get rain! Love the word aubergine.
Nice to see you and family back!
Maarten cut his hair!!! Looks really good :)
Happy to see your family again, and thanks for sharing your journey with us. ❤👌👍
I'm very happy to see that you are ok. Being a mum, a farmer, keeping sane through winter, making videos to publish etc etc etc. Is mentally and physically taxing. I'm so happy that you took a rest. Xx lovely garden!
Glad to see you back and do not worry about how often you post. Take care of yourself and your beautiful family.
Amazing video! I will have learned so much as I am growing my own garden. Thank you both❤
Your best video, so far. Loved it. More of these thorough videos, please. Loved it
Thanks Vicky! I'm happy about the result and will try to go more in this direction :)
Nice to see the whole family again and good to see you survived winter ❄️ now just how standard are blue chickens because I had never heard of them 😁 another reason to just come here to learn something new 🤓 no need for google 🌸 groetjes 🌸
