I'm from hyderabad, we have been celebrating it for few years. Even TRS and MIM ended up taking flag march. Anyway credit goes to BJP because they raised this issue and started celebrating it on 17th Sep, other parties ended up joining so they won't end up portraying themselves as anti national.

You should do a piece on the integration of Travancore to Indian Union. It was in the southern tip of India. The interesting part was, the Dewan of Travancore had similar delusions like the Prime Minister of Nizam. He wanted an independent Travancore. More interesting, the Dewan of Travancore was a Tamil Brahmin called Sir. C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer.
Nizam was made governor of Hyderabad whereas Maharaja Hari Singh was called to Delhi and asked to be in exile for six months but he was never allowed to come back to J&K till his death on 26.4.1961. His son brought his ashes back.

The point is that while the Congress Party portrayed a picture that India got Independence with nonviolence and civil disobedience the BJP on the other hand brought out that it was not correct and for freedom many Indians sacrificed their lives and many women lost their honour( due to raping, killing and dismembering of bodies etc). That is why this sort remembrance day etc. Sardar called the action against Nizam as police action simply because he never recognised as a separate state from the Union and there was no provision that the princely states declare their Independence, as they have option to choose join either India or Pakistan. Sardar did not want another Pakistan in the middle of India and called union's action as police action so that the Indian Army is not looked upon as agressor agsinst an Independent state led by Nizam and the forces were sent to control the riots etc. But one thing is clear that Sardar had some sort of influence in the Army which he utilised bring control of Nizam and throw Pakistani intruders in Kashmir.

Lot of village goondas used the context for doing horrible things here and there. Government lack of capacity to manage these misbehaving goonda peoples will be openly acknowledged through these celebrations. Most politicians of that time recognised that Hyderabad integration to India can have been done more peacefully, like Nehru originally conceived. Outside the Pakistan backed Razakars who virtually took the power in the kingdom, Nizam themselves haven't been negative towards India, and in fact despised Pakistan and the Muslim League.
