Great update, sorry to hear that you had to get off the trail but you did the best thing at the time and that was to take care of the issue at hand. Good to hear the knee is healing back back.
Darwin, I really enjoy the vids. Bummer to hear you've had issues with your knee. I know this video is over a year old but I know these issues have a way of coming back and I just wanted to check in to see how it's going. I have done some awesome bike tours on my Surly but have also been bit by the torn lateral meniscus a few times. I just recently re-injured it by walking uphill in a little snow (gotta watch that toe slip as I step forward). The pain usually goes away within a few days but the damage is done. I've read that they never heal 100 percent because cartilage doesn't get the same blood flow that other parts of our body do. How's yours holding up. You've been busy since this vid and I wanted to ask you about the preventative measures you take. I'm attempting a hike of the AZT in late Feb. or early March and I'm happy I still have plenty of time to recover before then. I'm interested to hear what precautions you take if any. I think I might try using a knee brace as a preventative measure and not just for healing after injury. Any thoughts? Thanks. Be well.
Great info as usual. I tore both meniscus powerlifting and had arthroscopic surgery. There was a 3-4 week recovery and PT and in the 10 years since I have not had any issues either working out or hiking with my SAR team or anything. I would recommend it before you do any further damage to it since the pieces can float around and irritate the rest of the knee. Looking forward to more excellent information and ideas.
50 miles per day bikepacking? That sounds amazing! I would struggle to do 50 miles for 2 days running on my road bike! Well done! Yeah the knee thing was a shame but glad to hear it appears to be healing
Sorry to hear about your knee issues. I'm currently going through the same, just had an MRI (the letter from my doc summed it up with the statement, "test results are significantly abnormal"). I have an orthopedic consult soon. But anyhoo... I'm researching an AZT trip for this Spring '17 and have a question, how did you get your bike shuttled around the Big Ditch? Every shuttle company I've talked to required a person be there to pick up the bike. How did you work around this? And where was the bike stored while you hiked? Thanks,
I'm not too familiar with the AZT, is it a trail that can be walked? Or is it a road/dirt road that's best for biking? Also when you say you hiked rim to rim, did you go down into the canyon and back up?
All of the Above Tara! It is an 800 mile National Scenic Trail stretching for Utah to Mexico that cuts straight through Arizona. It's comprised of Dirt Roads, Single Track Trail, Gravel Roads, and all of the above. As far as the Grand Canyon, the AZT follows the Rim to Rim trail leading from the North rim, to the bottom & back up to the South Rim.... Thanks for Watching! Hike On, Darwin
What was the outcome of having a doctor look at your knee? And, what if anything, do you where as a knee brace for support to help protect the knee from further problems?
Thanks Chase'n Trail!.... I hiked the North Kaibab Trail to the bottom and up the Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim. 24 miles, all in 1 day.... I took the Bright Angel Trail up VS the South Kaibab. The South Kaibab is shorter, but there is no water for almost 9 miles. Bright Angel is a bit longer, but has a ton of options for water! Check out the new video I posted on the Full Hike & Thanks for Watching! Hike On, Darwin
As of now it looks like I will be pushing the PCT back for a little bit. #1 I feel like my body needs a break from "long distance" trips. I'm super competitive and when I get out there I push it to hard. #2 Snuggles and I are working to accomplish what we set out to do when we left our "normal" lives in 2014, which is to live and work from the road and work seasonally at National Parks. with this being done I will also be able to put out a lot more content and focus on more "smaller trips". Thanks for Watching! Hike On, Darwin
Darwin Onthetrail thats cool. you know you planted a seed with this bikepacking thing haha. thinking San Diego to Patagonia now. good luck healing and thx for what you do man
Sorry to hear about the meniscus tear? Did you get a MRI on the knee. I work in radiology Doing X-rays CT and MRI. We see a ton of knee injuries, best thing to do is RICE: Rest Ice Compression And Elevation. I know it's hard to rest trust me I have a knee injury as well. Good luck on the injury. On the bright side looked like the rim to rim hike was a very spiritual hike for you. Good on you for doing that man. Hopefully we can collaborate again... I didn't end up going down to NM, stayed in CO for some snowboarding. Andy
It's all good Andy! Things happen & you just gotta roll with it. I've been doing a ton of RICE & strengthening everything around my knee. I'm really Quad dominant & I think I just overloaded them with a muscle imbalance when hiking "down" the canyon. I live to ride another day good sir! Ride On, Darwin
Right on! Looking forward to more.
Can't wait to give you more Steve! Thanks for Watching!

was the knee flare-up because of a mishap or accident while on the rim, or did it happen during regular motion?

Darwin,
Glad you're on the mend. On your rim to rim: what route/trails did you take? Would you recommend? Did you overnight? Thanks!

Bummer about your knee on the AZT. Are you planning to finish it sometime?
no PCT then?
