These are all logical points, I can't disagree with any, however, I think for me a foot-shaped shoe with a little extra room is essential for avoiding foot problems on the rim to rim (to rim). I think it is crazy that many young people wear black, but I guess they think they look fashionable! I hope to see you out on the trail someday!

Yeah my normal shoe size is a UK 9, but my hiking shoes, at least for harder hikes, are a UK 10, as your feet swell up. Never have blisters but on hard hikes I use gurney goo on my feet, and hiking wool.

@@chrisj8764 Sounds like a good strategy. I had to look up gurney goo (anti-chafing cream). 🙂

Great advice! I’m currently training for my first rim to rim and have a healthy respect for it. Looking forward to a beautiful and challenging hike.

I hope you have a great adventure! I run the Rim2Rim a couple times a year, and am headed back in 3 weeks to run another Rim2River. Love being in the Canyon.

As a long distance backpacker it’s common knowledge to always wear shoes at least one size bigger than your actual shoe size. I did not do this on my first thru hike and I needed to purchase new shoes in less than a 100 miles. I purchased the exact same shoes one size larger and I never had any issues since. Your feet will swell. I don’t actually know anyone using actual boots anymore, mostly trail runners or light hiking shoes. I have never needed to break any of these in. Back in the day I always used leather boots and they certainly needed to be broken in. Take care

I would say that the swelling really peaks when you're out for multiple days straight, but at least ½ size for something like this, unless it's really pushing your limits, then 1 may be a good idea. So loose you're sliding around is also bad, but you can add sock layers whereas if your shoe is too tight, you're SOL. Agreed, boots are exclusively for crampons these days. "Support" is a marketing lie.

Sage advice Dr. Bill! The people wearing black, especially in tank tops with a ball cap, just kill me. The sun at high altitude just microwaves them.
A great shirt in the Canyon is the Nike "Pro Combat" long sleeve, with perforated back, side, and underarm panels. They're inexpensive used, like on Mercari/Poshmark/ebay. Combined with a full brim hat to keep the sun off the face, ears, and neck, and it's a great combo.
