  • In this video I will be going over what I think Sonic Team needs to do to make Sonic Rangers successfully. Since we've learned that Sonic Rangers will be an open world styled game, there is a lot the team needs to overhaul to make Sonic work in a free 3D environment.

      Keep in mind that probably half of that time was dedicated to work on an "engine" for Sonic's physics since if it's gonna be an open world, it can't control like in a boost game, it's gotta work perfectly in every direction and be able to build momentum. And I put quotes on "engine" because the engine itself is probably gonna be Havok like it has been since Sonic 06 but I don't know how else to call it. I'm sure you get my point tho
      Edit: I did some research and it turns out that Havok is just a collision engine, so maybe I was right about them having to make an actual engine to make Sonic work as it should. Sorry, my thing is more the artistic part rather than the technical stuff

      @@Kaplykos I do, but I doubt they would go as far as developing hedgehog engine 3 (let’s just say) because developing a new engine screwed them twice now.

      @@weaponx7779 Hedgehog Engine is a graphics engine, I'm talking about them making an engine to make Sonic's physics work in a fully 3D environment to explore and play around

      @@quillquail yeah but what I'm saying is that all these years didn't go into crafting the story and creating the world, levels and mechanics as many people may think.
      Also, I believe that they spent so much time creating a new HE because they lost the code of the original, just like what happened with the boost

    Story is definitely important. The main Classic games, Adventure games, Heroes, the Storybook series, GBA games, Unleashed, Shadow the Hedgehog and 06 (to an extent) all had some serious stories that are similar to shonen anime that has the Chaos Emeralds involved with story and Super Sonic being used for the final boss.
    Lately, with the exception of Generations and Colors (DS), Sonic Team seems to have forgotten about the Chaos Emeralds and not have them involve with the story since they have Saturday morning cartoon vibes.
    Now after seeing the teaser for Rangers, I can see from it and through the leaks that they might be going for a more serious story that has a perfect balance. After all, it has been a while since we've seen a realistic forest with normal trees in a Sonic game

      The Shonen element needs to be leaned into when it comes to story telling because fans have always related Sonic with Shonen tropes look at every action based Sonic thing on Newgrounds.

      @Welp In the Japanese story of Sonic 1, Eggman invaded South Island for the Chaos Emeralds and Sonic had to get them before he did and save the Animals. The Advance Trilogy involved Eggman gathering the Emeralds in each of their story, Sonic Battle had the Chaos Emeralds help Emerl evolve mentally. Even though it wasn't mentioned in the story manual, Heroes still told us that we had collect the emeralds to unlock the final story and in Shadow, he believed that the Chaos Emeralds would help him learn more of his past with the Black Arms needing them to bring their home to earth (all those other endings in the game he either used them for good or evil)
      All in all, certain Sonic games, including the spin-offs (not counting Storybook series mind you) had the Chaos Emeralds become central objects of the story

    If Infinite returns, I would love for him to have a redemption arc. The last time we had a new permanent member of the main cast was Silver in '06, and I think it would be neat to have a villain be redeemed and become a main character.

      I didn't even think about that. I always felt he went underused for how cool he looks (with or without the mask). I want him to be used again in general, but having him actually join the main crew would be pretty sick.

      Do you really think we need more characters? They have like more than a dozen of them but only use Sonic. I'd prefer to keep him as a villain for a while and give the spotlight to other characters before expanding the cast even more. Like, we still have to see a good incarnation of Silver and the Chaotix are a great group with great synergy and very fun interactions but their appearance (if they even appear as a team) is more anecdotic than anything.
      Idk, this is just how I see it

      I don't agree, unfortunately. Infinite is heavily tied to the phantom ruby, and if people have been frustrated with what exactly the chaos emeralds DO in the games, the phantom ruby is so much worse. Honestly, the ruby has terrible writing, and ruins the story for me. Because Infinite is kinda just a regular guy with the phantom ruby, which apparently almost anyone can use, I personally dont want to see him come back

    from what ive heard seems like the name "SONIC TEAM" is now just a brand name for the sake of keeping things concistent the real name behind the games is now at the US called Sonic Studios it was mentioned in the famitsu interview that izuka did

      @@TheDylan0602 its good to bring that up because even if in the teaser and in the game is shown as sonic team we can't be for sure that 100% of that original team is still there because with massive changes such as that comes with a lot of new hires and and role changes inside that development team so im sceptical about this game until more info and footage comes out

      @OS we dont know for sure but all things indicate that is being developed in japan (thats probably bacause they started development during this changes of names staff and all)but under the supervision of the US staff as well
      some leakers said similar things and the recent interview and some other things have pointing to this being the case

    Dude, since Sonic colors, all the stories, except Forces, have been written first in English and then translated into Japanese. Pontac and Graff are the ones who have written the stories for these games and then Japan adapts them to their country when they do the localization.
    To be honest I miss dark age stories, I would like good Japanese writers like Shiro maekawa who really understood the characters to come back and then Ian Flynn would do the localization in English as he also has a good knowledge of Sonic and the others, I feel like that would be the perfect match

    They talk just like Parents talking to their son who has been failing tests, over and over and over.

    Its interesting with hindsight just how much of this aged well and what aged poorly, Frontiers mostly hit the mark but there were fumbles in a few area, but its just a promising first step and I'll more than happily take that because the trajectory only seems to go up for the franchise nowadays

    We need for the game to not be a rushed mess, we need the game to have replay value, a good story that isnt stupid, not just play as Sonic. If it's open world make it huge, actually incorporate physics like rolling down hill you go faster.(Take notes from Mario Odyssey) No more nostalgia, Green Hill Zone is in this game I swear to god. If you are going to do it make it some Sonic Adventure nostalgia. Cause the people who played Sonic 1 are 30. And please don't make Sonic stiff as hell like he is in the boost games. When I turn with Sonic at high speeds I want it to feel nice and smooth so that running fast is fun.

      @@mattbelcher7135 Yeah, replay value for me is mostly in Sonic’s stages. Which is ironic since one of my biggest gripes with modern games is that only Sonic is playable. Tbf, if all the games where sonic was the only playable character played like his levels in SA2, I probably wouldn’t complain *as* much.

      @@SgtSega we are a very divided fanbase my friend. Some people prefer this, some people prefer that, and in some instances we can all agree on something.
      But in most causes its usually sega, or stupid critics to blame. Blame sega for making dumb decisions and critics for misleading sega all these years.

      @@SgtSega Because they describe SR as an open world game. Open World games can be great, but only if:
      1)Open world games are especially easy to screw up. Full 3D is always more complex to work with than 2D. So the people making it need to know what they're doing.(As in what to do and not do,how to pace it,etc.)
      2) If they have the resources and a large amount of people to do it. For one, Sonic Team isn't known for working on any open world games prior, so they might not have any experience in the genre. Sonic Team is not that big and the Sonic games before this have been budget titles since Unleashed.
      3) Sonic Team/Sega has, for the longest time, been struggling to translate Sonics momentum-based movement from 2D to 3D,never being able to settle on a single gameplay style. And fun movement options are especially important in a open world game, considering traversing the place is what you'll be doing most of time.
      So knowing this, can you blame people for being skeptical that Sonic Team(and by extension,Sega) can pull this off give their track record? The only way I'd have a little more faith in them is they went out of their way to hire people to help in development that have experience in open world games. I don't trust that Sega/Sonic Team have the tools needed to make what sounds like a good idea on paper actually work in practice.

    Things a good Sonic game needs
    1. Good gameplay (Lots of jumping, dodging, fighting, and problems solving. Not just running in a straight line.)
    2. Good story (Eggman can't be the only one to take over the world all the time.)
    3. Use of all the characters and their abilities (Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Shadow, Silver, Blaze, etc.)
    4. Multiple levels, secret levels, and open world activities (with plenty of Chaos Emeralds to collect)
    5. Make sure it's fun (if you can beat the game in under an hour something's wrong)

    The only thing I want is for the game to be great. Even if this game is a huge disappointment, I’ll always support this series. We ALL should be supporting this series. We can’t just give up on Sonic just because they made a few missteps in the past. Sure 06 nearby killed the series, but SEGA and Sonic Team have proven that they can keep the franchise going with Unleashed, Colors, and Generations. If there’s a time that we should be fully supporting the development team, it’s now.

      A very important advice indeed (although while Sonic Next-Gen and Sonic Genesis were games so problematic that they were just about to murder the franchise, what makes it even worse is that they are anniversary titles,, the former is a guilty pleasure because of some of the things it did greatly which showed Sonic Team tried and there are even worse Sonic games like yes, Sonic Genesis which like Sonic Free Riders and Sonic Forces, SEGA didn’t even try despite that they are actually perfectly capable of making awesome games if they could make Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 for the Dreamcast, Sonic Advance 3, SEGA Superstars, the Super Smash Bros. Melee sequels, Sonic Unleashed HD, the 2013 versions of Sonic 1 & 2, the Sonic Dash series and Sonic Mania)

      @@derrickhaggard Although to be fair, the 2D Sonic games (especially Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic 1 & 2 for the iOS/Android) are pretty damn fun with their retro appeal (though yeah, they can also have their weaknesses like Sonic 2 for the Genesis and 8-bit consoles also by Sega can be frustrating to play a lot of the time along with Sonic Advance 2).

      @@derrickhaggard Exactly, there are good 3D Sonic games like Sega Superstars (the most underrated one to start my list off), the Sonic Adventure Dreamcast series, Sonic Unleashed (yeah, I said it, Sonic Forces fanboys!), Sonic Heroes (for the most part… m.ua-cam.com/video/85aOGNW-XYc/v-deo.html), Sonic Riders & Zero Gravity, Sonic Generations, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing series, Sonic Colours, Team Sonic Racing, Sonic Jam (Saturn), Mario & Sonic at the (Beijing 2008 Summer) Olympic Games (Wii/DS), its sequel Mario & Sonic at the (Vancouver 2010) Winter Olympic Games and the Super Smash Bros. series.

      It isn't gonna be an absurdly huge game with too much stuff and environment details as CP2077 so it'll be worth it, DMC5 is a good example of a game like this because it doesn't have glitches and while Open, it isn't the size of CP2077 because with a game like that, there's too much included and going on so it has bugs, they're not game breaking or severe but bugs nonetheless, you can literally still play the game even with these bugs but Sonic Rangers wont be this big and there wont be too much in it, the map will be big but not the the extent of that, it will probably be the size of GTA Vice City and that means it'll perform better than if it was the size of GTAIV or GTAV.

    I don't think there's anything wrong with japan writing the stories , i quite liked the 2000s game's stories which were often more complex and larger than life than your average cookie cuter western script which is what we've been getting whenever the scripts are written in english

      To be fair Metroid Prime 4 had only started development at that point... and that's before it was restarted.
      Sonic Rangers is expected next year.

    While I am scared like you Sam for this next Sonic game, I wanna be optimistic and just see how room of improvements this team can do. Like remove their usual thinking and just be bold, big and ambition for Sonic Rangers.
    I hope and pray that it'll not be one of those concepts that in the end didn't work at all. Hope they can pull this off

    Knowing Sonic Team, I’m kinda expecting the next game to be one huge, bland map with boring puzzles and combat sections scattered everywhere without that much momentum.
    Hopefully, Sonic Team surprises us and exceeds our expectations. It really worries me that the leakers called the game boring...

      They didn't call the game boring, they called a test demo boring. In test demos, that's as high of a score as it goes. It wasn't horrible, unplayable mess. Therefore, great success!

      It was a very early access. No one should take those comments seriously because the game was obviously in a very early state, so they will obviously improve upon it.

    I honestly hope the movie also made Sega realize Sonic could be more than a one dimensional character. The movie not only reintroduced me to the series, but made me give a damn about Sonic with what he was going through. The movie wasn’t afraid to have Sonic express emotion, where as Sonic in Forces is the same joker start to finish.
    The game can be open world or be as confined as Forces, but if they don’t make us give a frick about Sonic and give him more range in Rangers, there’s going to be a problem.

    An open world Sonic game would best work with the Adventure formula, to be quite frankly honest.

    I always felt like this would be a good idea but I HIGHLY doubt they would but If this is open world then there might be thick forests which would be a big obstacle to Sonic so What if: When Sonic hits a thinner tree at high speeds, he starts swinging around it like a pole and when you press the junp button, he shoots out at super speeds. But if you hit another tree, Sonic clings onto the side of the tree and if you jump again he speeds towards another tree. So he basically triangle jumps from tree to tree at high speeds and you use the control stick to decide whether to jump backwards or forwards making Thicker forests easier to navigate. When Sonic hit a larger and thicker tree at high speeds, Sonic would run up the tree and you can swirl around the tree to dodge incoming branches and when Sonic reaches the tip of the tree, He perches himself by spreading his legs outwards and using one hand to balance on the tip and the other hand he places right over his eyes, kinda like in the Sonic CD intro, which would then allow you to see the land from above. But if you jump as soon as Sonic touches the peak of the tree, he would bend the tip and launch himself forwards at high speeds, then you would be able to dropdash which would give you faster vertical momentum and keep all your forward momentum or make you even faster.

    I like this though I gotta say I think this teaser actually showed much less than Forces'.
    As for the "Final boss" leak, why would they make a final boss already? It was probably the final boss of the stage.

      Agreed there is no way they the tease the final boss/true final boss of the whole game this early they probably meant the first major boss that comes at the end of one the early stages.

    For Sonic Team though we don’t know if the people who worked on forces are still present. Especially with the news about the whole restructuring that happened after forces

    Are we just forgetting that they could change the physics for Boost Sonic, to fit an open world? Just because the team from Forces is a part of developing Rangers, doesn't mean it's gonna control identically. You gotta keep in mind, that Forces controls were designed for automation. Of course Sonic is gonna control like ass in open areas. So, I think it's pointless to assume he'll control the same in Rangers.

      @ actually it would work well, if you pair it with a good physics engine. Essentially make it:
      Using boost = max speed instantly, but will make it hard to control
      Don’t use boost = take a little bit to get to max speed, but can still be controlled
      Again, that’s possible WITH a good physics engine

    Honestly, what I want from rangers is a good combat system. Just by coincidence I was watching an indie open world survival game where a golem threw a rock at the guy and he dodged it, which reminded me (for some reason) of sonic rangers.
    I want a system where it requires a lot of dodging and agility/reflexes to fight enemies, or at least large enemies. Something like, a monster throws a rock at sonic so you can quickstep roll out of the way and then do a quick spin dash into his face and jump up and start button mashing on him, until he’s about to attack you and you have to quick step backwards out of the way and dodge their special attacks in unique ways.
    But I’m scared they’re just gonna make it another sonic unleashed where you mash attack to win

    Honestly, I will agree with you about Sonic needing much much better control than Forces, but I will argue that Generations generally controls very nicely in 3D. Both for speed and platforming. That said, I do want more Adventure-like control for Rangers, obviously, I wouldn’t be super upset if the control was at least as good as Generations. Maybe make it a little tighter, and add some rolling physics, and boom. I’d say that would be good enough. If the game controls anything like Forces, I will probably cry.
    Other than that, I just really want the open world to be filled with NPCs to talk to and get quests from, villages/cites with their own unique NPCs (like have an Echidna Tribe in one city, and maybe some fox animals in their own city, and stuff like that), “Zones” (so areas of the map that have different aesthetic, like areas in BOTW), natural platforming challenges to make exploration fun, and lots of mystical and mysterious things that sort of give additional subtext to the story of the world. I also want a wide variety of outfits and combat/movement abilities to unlock for Sonic (think like the recent Insomniac Spider-Man games). For the cyberspace levels, and just the game in general, I do hope they bring the challenge. And I REALLY want a good brand new story, with a sense of mystery, suspense, stakes, and some levity here and there.
    Oh and I do really want this game to last a loooooooong time. Like I want at least 10 hours to just beat the story and lots of post game content. And maybe some DLC campaigns.
    It feels like I’m asking a lot, cuz of the very small kinda games we’ve been getting since Colors, but this is the kind of stuff an interesting and good open world game kinda needs. And I want Sonic Team to go big with this game and make it one of best Sonic games ever. I think they can pull it off, but they’ve just gotta put their best foot forward and really push for that goal.

    What I need. No more damn wisps. They should have been done with in color's but Sonic Team said otherwise and just needlessly milked these things for what little they were worth to me in the first place. Sorry. I just never liked the wisps besides in Colors. If the next game has them... The quote that will immediately spring to mind. Im not mad. Im just disappointed.

    A point: Green Hill Paradise - Act II does not feature a "boost." Not sure if that is what was implied, as you switched to GHP footage when discussing it, but GHP's Mach State mechanic is much closer in concept to Advance 2, 3 and Rush's after-image state. You cannot enter Mach State from only running on flat terrain. You must surpass your base ground speed using slopes to enter the state and you will fall out of it if you slow down below the threshold.
    Overall, though, you are absolutely right about everything, Sam! An open-world Sonic game NEEDS to have varied terrain and a movement system that takes advantage of said terrain.
    If Sonic doesn't go faster when he goes down a hill, then there effectively IS NO HILL. Plain 'n simple.

    Things I Want in Sonic Rangers
    1. Adventure/Open World.
    2. Multiple characters.
    3. Better 3D grasphic as the last Nintendo 3D games.
    4. Multiple playable characters sharing one story from each perspective of it.
    5. There are similarities and referances just to my best favorite Sonic game Sonic Adventure.
    6. Anime-esque.
    7. Darker and Edgier.
    8. Anime-esque or semi-realistic humans.
    9. Interesting great plot.
    10. New anthropomorphic animal character.
    11. Less harder boost stages.
    12. Soundtrack that sounds great for me.

Think about it: a move that makes you go incredibly fast- logically this is a good idea for a Sonic game, a game abut the fastest thing alive. So it's just so curious that for some reason a maneuver made for a speed-type character does not fit said speed-type character.

    111 comments as of now (well not anymore) and I don't care about what sonic does now or what rangers is gonna do but I will say this: I disagree actually with the story being written in English first. I mean... technically I guess this is a good idea to go with dubbing and all but hypothetically I (and no disrepect I'm sure these guys are really good writers) wouldn't really have used Ian Flynn and such to actually WRITE the story. I would rather some one else (or it could even have been Ian Flynn who knows) along with translators to TRANSLATE and fix up the story for the Western version of the game for that audience.
    What we had such a hard time understanding is Sonic is honestly best written like an anime. I'm not saying IDW and all that is bad on the contrary even the movie was good. I'm not saying Sonic Mania Adventures or the recent shows like Team SOnic Racing Overdrive or Chao in Space were bad. I honestly think they were very good. But Sonic is best written like something like Lupin or Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Sonic is not really a Western character like Bugs Bunny (even though I do think he can have hints of that). Sonic is actually a lot closer to someone like Dante or Yu Yusuke or Goku.
    Think of it this way: Omochao would be closer to Teddie from Persona 4. Amy is more like Card Captor Sakura. Tails is more like a cute little boy like Shinji Akari. This is the idea. So using this logic that is how I would have written the story. Because honestly this very idea is what they used for the original Sonic games from the get-go. It's a story about Sonic discovering islands, lost civilizations, stopping Eggman from taking and using natural resources, conflict with person vs. self, environment, others, robots, autonomy, the meaning of life. Sonic 3 is about outrunning the Sun, beating the clock, seizing the day. Sonic CD is life-force and the will to do anything. Sonic 2 is about facing your fears and making your dreams come true. Sonic 1 is the one that started it all. This is the idea. It's a beautiful succession.
    But if I had to be honest I can imagine the writing being like that new colors animation and that's not a bad thing at all.

      Also if I have to be honest with I do not think the story of Sonic the Hedgehog is supposed to be a happy one. What is mean is even though Sonic gives good life lessons and things and they're all pretty cheerful well... I personally think the world they live in a pretty horrible one.

    So when it comes down to Sonic games, Sonic Team is not the best team to make Sonic games. I'm pretty sure this game is going to be alright, but not fantastic. Sonic team needs to remember that Sonic was designed with "roller coaster" physics in mind. Roller Coasters rely on built up momentum, not boost!

    There's an Open World Game that utilizes a Boost mechanic and does it right, inFAMOUS First Light because Fitch moves at a normal and somewhat slow pace normally but when activating the Neon Dash, she turns into Neon gas and moves as a trail of Neon light as afterimages appear behind and she moves fast on the ground but can ascend into the air and move as well because she is Neon gas, she glides and when coming up to walls of buildings, she can scale up them and keeps moving, you dont have to input a different button to go up, just stay in that Dash.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention Sonic GT with Utopia and Project Hero. Its so underrated. IMO so far GT is the best example of open sonic levels using momentum and physics with great level design. Project hero might be better when it’s out but it’s not done yet.

    I, personally, think that the lost world gameplay style would be really good for an open world game. Also, I think that it's dumb that people take the people who said the open world wasn't fun seriously. The game isn't going to be released until next year, so they obviously will improve it.

    We need a good story, playable characters which I dont care who returns as long as someone else gets the spotlight, originality and fresh ideas, good music even though it will be good as I love SFR and Forces soundtrack (not Classic Sonic's in Forces, it's really bad) and old moves to make another appearance such as Sonic's Sonic Wind from SA2Battle because he's capable of much more than Drift, Boost, Homing Attack, Stomp, Slide and Crouch.

    Have to admit. I would be SUPER bummed out if they don't let you play as multiple characters in a game like this. I know it's extra work for them. But so many characters have so many different move sets and abilities that an open world is the perfect place to put them to use. Sort of like I wish they let you play as Revali in Breath of The Wild purely because a flight based character would have been an awesome change in perspective.

    I couldn’t have said this better myself. I hope the open world has tons of memorable landmarks and is fun to explore and just lose yourself in. I want this open world to have replay value that lasts for years to come like in previous games. I’m just going to mention how the marketing is kind of scaring me. Sonic Forces had a teaser without a name, and that game was a major disappointment, so Sega was probably nervous (not a bad game, but it’s not great either.) Sonic Rangers/2022 has a teaser without a name, so I hope Sega is not nervous again. I hope Sega has something to show, and I hope they make this good. I don’t want Sega to play it safe, I want them to go big even if they fail (that’s why Sonic 06 is at least respectable because of the ambition). This is all going on the assumption that the leaks are true. I just hope the level design and controls are fixed, and I hope there’s actually a reason to go back to this game even after I beat it. -Also the final boss being a robotic tree just sounds ridiculous. I hope they go with something more intimidating.- I just hope this game is good and it doesn’t flop.

    If the boost is coming back, I think it would be interesting to implement it along side momentum gameplay in such a way that the boost is used intelligently. What do I mean by this?
    In Sonic Colors, the use of the boost was limited by the fact that it was charged by White Wisps, a resource much more limited than rings, and were only found in Wisp Capsules and a select few enemies. As such, the player had to use the boost sparingly, or risk not having it in sections where it would be helpful. The speed Sonic could reach when using the boost was also noticeably greater than what he could manage without it, and as such Sonic would land at different locations after running off ramps depending on whether or not he was boosting.
    I think Sonic Rangers could benefit from having mechanic similar to this. Sonic could reach high speeds with momentum alone, but could only reach his maximum speed if he used the boost, whose energy reserves are extremely limited. This would require players to be smart with how often they use the boost.
    For example, say there is an island Sonic wants to get to. If you want to hydroplane over the surface and f the water to get goodies along the way, you need the higher speed granted by the boost. However, the water is still shallow enough to run along the sea floor, making it so the island is not inaccessible without the boost.
    Another example. Say there is a ramp with two potential landing zones depending on if you boost off it or not, with both having goodies. Depending on which landing zone you wanted to hit, you’d need to choose whether or not you boosted, or risk overshooting your target.
    With this design, the boost can also act as a crutch for new players while they learn to gain momentum naturally by allowing them to reach top momentum speed with a boost pulse. However, over relying on the boost to hit max speed punishes the player by depleting the boost meter, potentially leaving them without the boost when they really need it.

    If this is a sequel to Forces I would love to see the CaC come back or at the least and this my idea for the CaC allow us to transfer our CaCs over to Rangers basically have our main CaC aka the one seen in cutscenes that we played as throughout Forces be the sole playable one but have any other CaCs created post-Forces Main Game show up as friendly NPCS who would act as mission givers or point out locations to the Secret Stages which means have Sonic Rangers come out for PS4, along with Switch, and PS5, and Xbox Series X/S along with due to the fact most of us can't get a PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
    Now concerning the CaC's gameplay given that the CaC seemingly gained powers similar to Infinite via the Phantom Ruby Prototype let's say for the plot the the CaC still has them along with the shards of the Prototype found at the end of Aqua Road, and has spent the time after Forces self-teaching himself/herself how to wield them giving the CaC a Phantom Ruby enhanced Spin Dash if Male/Dash Pirouette if female also this means the CaC will no longer wield the Wispons but will instead use the grappling hook in combination with the Phantom Ruby powers, and as for base stats let's keep the Sonic Wiki CaC stats that being the CaC is equal to Blaze in speed, better in agility then Sonic but not as good as Blaze, and equal to Knuckles in terms of physical strength.
    Now plot, and secret stages along with having Zero/Infinite return as the main villain let's also make his redemption a key factor in the plot now we'll have 5 main characters we'll play as for most of the game those being Sonic, Shadow, Silver, Blaze the Cat, and finally the CaC with smaller side-stages that allow us to play as characters like Tails, Rouge, Omega, Cream, and Marine giving them time to shine and get more development and completing a certain number of main stages and a certain number of side-stages will result in a friendly NPC pointing out the location of a Secret Stage, and like in Forces these stages will be platforming levels with upon completing them the first time around will result in either Sonic, Shadow, or Silver getting a Chaos Emerald, Blaze getting a Sol Emerald, or the CaC getting a Phantom Ruby, yes as part of the plot Zero under the possession of the Phantom Ruby that he has and still under the guise of Infinite is messing with reality resulting in danger to the main dimension and various other dimensions including the Sol Dimension and resulting in other Phantom Rubies showing up and if you complete all 3 of Sonic's Secret Stages, all 2 of Shadow's Secret Stages, all 2 of Silver's Secret Stages, all 7 of Blaze's Secret Stages, and all 6 of the CaC's Secret Stages you'll unlock the true final boss fight where we get to play as Super Sonic, Super Shadow, Super Silver, Burning Blaze, and the CaC who gets a Phantom Ruby powered Super Form in order to beat Infinite/Phantom Ruby Entity in order to save all the dimensions, and Zero.

    I just hope this game has a good story like adventure 2 or unleashed and more characters. Not even playable, although that would be great, but just there at all. They don't even have to have that big a role in the overall story. Like, if it's going to be open world, why not have side missions across the map as an excuse to include other characters. Have a side mission where you race the Babylon rogues or something. Gameplay is important, obviously, especially for an open world title. But l'm more concerned about a proper story.
    (And other playable characters since we haven't had those since like 06. Let me play as Silver and Tails)

    Just a clarification, as some other people have said in comments: The name "Sonic Team" doesn't mean anything anymore. The initial Forces' trailer said something along the lines of "brought to you by the people who made Generations and Colors," and a lot of that staff was different. The same applies for this recent teaser, a lot of the Sonic Team staff have changed since Forces, so the game could turn out either way.

    Multiple playable chatacters needs to comeback. As excluding Black Knight its been 15 years - I'll say that again, FIFTEEN YEARS! - since we mainline Sonic Team game to feature other characters that wasn't just Sonic and... well Sonic. Bring back Amy, Knux and Miles, because if Boom despite all its problems could have them playable, then Rangers really has no excuse for their absence. Otherwise what's even the point of having them around?
    In terms of story, Sonic and Tails R is what they should be aiming for, where the characters actually act the way they're supposed to, and actually care to treat things seriously. Because if they see everything to be one big joke, like how its been since Colours onward, then why should we care what happens? Also go and look up Sonic and Tails R if you've not already seen it! Its like a love letter to how things used to be, and probably one of the truest representations of Shadow we've gotten since 06, voiced by the one and only Jason Griffith.

      ​@@immasword Generations had two Sonics. And considering Modern Sonic has 2D sections of his own, doesn't that not make Classic kinda redundant when we could have had Tails, Amy and Rouge playable instead? After all it is a celebration of the franchise, isn't it?
      Mania, like Boom, was not made by Sonic Team, being an independent team of fans, and it was 2D. I'm talking 3D, given that its Rangers.
      And Forces again had two Sonics, and Shadow who was basically a Modern Sonic reskin to the point where he too didn't have an idle animation either (so 3 Sonics?) and I suppose there was OC, but it largely played like Sonic without the boost, given it did have a homing attack of its own.
      I would like see something more like the Adventure games were everyone had their own unique moves that set them apart from each other.

      @@mechashadow He's the only one who isn't characterized correctly. They turned him into a whiny little "tech only" guy. For one, I'm pretty sure Pontaff and Graff are gone. For two, none of Sonic's lines under Pontaff's writing was cringey.
      He was characterized just fine under them, and while a couple lines were cheesy and not funny, they were never bad. None of Sonic's jokes are really funny under anyone's writing, there just meant to be cocky little remarks.

      @@chrange9714 For me, Sonic stopped feeling believably cocky and dorky after Generations. Afterwards, its unnecessary forced drama, non charming charming moments that just felt like they weren't really trying to *be* charming, and off-kilter characterisation.

      Chrange Feel Like some people got so hyper focused on that Tails scene they completely miss everything else around that franchise.
      Most if not all the characters, if not all has been reduced to tropes just toys on a drawstring to repeat those personalities.
      Cream is just a kid, Shadow has to be grumpy and so on. They used to have backstories and Character Arcs which made them feel real.
      Speaking of which because Shirō Maekawa wrote stories with real stakes and real personalities there were genuine humour thrown in particularly in the banter between Caliburn and Sonic and even Unleashed did humour well in those Show don’t tell humorous extra scene.
      Humour has been done well in Sonic games when it comes from heart and not trying to be trending with every line.

    The way I see it is they have an engine made which is what the production time for forces was used on majorly so going for a rumored open world even with a boost sounds promising if anything sadly they are going to fail but they will fail trying something new which is better than failing at something after 10 years of doing the same thing however I firmly believe that given enough time with creative new ideas for rangers it will be fun and hopefully good so good luck sega looking forward to the new sonic games and collections

    to be honest, 2022 seems like a fair release date. I've grown used to media coming out a year after it's announcement.
    Even then, I won't mind if they have to delay it.

    Agree with this video. Momentum and rolling physics are FOUNDATIONAL to Sonic's gameplay identity. I've been thinking about this since Utopia came out and it finally started to click with me why Sonic had felt so different to control, and recently, I've been thinking even more granularly about it. Yes, Momentum is key here, downward slopes speed you up, upward slopes slow you down, even ground retains your current speed. Rolling Multiplies these effects at the cost of control, you can't speed up or slow down without slopes like you can while running. All true, but something I feel needs to be a part of the discussion is the concept of the primary gameplay loop, the core repeatable set of actions you're doing the whole game, defined by gameplay verbs (running, jumping, rolling, spinning in Sonic's case).
    Gameplay loops are layers of interactivity for games. You can think of them in terms of time. What can the player do in 1 second? 5 seconds? 10? 30? a minute? 10 minutes? an hour?, and so on until the game is complete. that 1-10 second window? That's your primary gameplay loop. That's your controls. In 1 second, you can start running, you can jump, you can homing attack, and you can roll/spindash. I'm using 10 seconds but Sonic Adventure 1's core loop is more like 5 seconds (and that's still probably generous). SA1's run takes about 3 seconds to hit top speed on even ground, all the rest of his basic actions take about half a second to a second and a half to complete on the most basic level. I'm saying all this to give you a basic idea of what I mean by the primary gameplay loop, and why it's important. The timing on how each gameplay verb works plays into how they feel to use. The boost is instantaneous, you press and go, but imagine it took a couple seconds to kick in, it'd feel pretty different to use right?
    So what is ABSOLUTELY PARAMOUNT, is that Sonic's core loop be fun. There's that anecdote about how Shigeru Miyamoto spent a year just playing around with Mario 64's movement, until it felt good to use in an empty plane, before starting to build levels. Sonic needs the same approach, both because that's just good practice for games and because as a 3d platformer, the approach translates more directly. How many frames does Sonic take to get to his top speed while running? How long does it take for him to go from running forward to running more to the right or left? How many frames does the jump take to start and how many to finish? How much height does each jump gain on each jump and how long does it take him to fall on even ground? All basic game design stuff but the point here is that until the answer to each of these questions (and lots of other, similar questions) makes controlling Sonic fun and satisfying in an empty field for a good amount of time (to this day running around station square, a mostly flat plane, is still fun), focus on those. There were other questions pertaining to his physics and how they're calculated but you get the idea. Not focusing on (or being able to focus on) the primary loop being fun like this is how you get controls like Sonic 06, which literally feels like moving a cube around in a default blender game engine, super stiff and precise for what it is.
    Oh also, a fully functioning player controlled 3d camera (controlled with right analog stick or mouse) please. Ironically, 06 is the only one to have made a serious attempt at that and it makes me die inside.

    I hope we play as different characters. I hope Infinite returns and if SEGA gives him a redemption arc, also playable. For the story if the Phantom Ruby is back we need to know more about it and also Null Space.

    I just hope the Boost mechanic isn't the entire play-style. They need better control for Sonic for platforming sections, and I want it entirely 3D, no more 2D sections

    I 1000% agree with you. They need to really figure out how he controls, and I been clambering that forever ago. Tired of stuff, delays. It needs to be tight with great momentum! That cannot be stressed enough. I’m so glad there changing the gameplay up, but it’s important that it’s executed on accord. I’m also begging for different writers, or different tone altogether from what we we’ve had for 10 years. Just because we want to be engaged with a serious thoughtful story, doesn’t mean we’re asking for Shakespeare. The story can be what it wants, but make us care at least. At least try to put some effort for wider audience. Don’t have the characters be overly cheesy, and out of place. It seems like where getting there for what I want from Sonic next. New ambitious 3D explorational type gameplay, with hopefully successfully creative new ideas, and a different tone with less corny writing. I want a AAA feeling Sonic title again. Being budget frankly insults the franchise name, and take away fresh excitement potential. If Sonic is the only playable yet again, that will be super duper disappointing. Why not absolutely go all in anyway with more characters for variety? I hate that this has been tradition as long as it has, and replaced the potential of Sonic’s friends with annoying ideas.

    Boost needs to be dropped, its always going to overly restrict actual gameplay for glorified Temple Run phone game snake intestines shit.
    - You can't have actually interesting open level design (open world or otherwise)
    - You can't have tight controls
    - You can't have genuinely lengthy levels
    - You will almost always rely on gimmicks and 2D garbage for filler
    - The style takes the pointless automated segments from the Adventure games and turns them into the bulk of the "gameplay"
    - You will be focusing too much on window dressing for levels you barely see, thus wasting a shit ton of money on largely irrelevant non-interactive features.
    This gameplay style is not sustainable.

      There's actually a form of Boost from Sonic Advance 2 and 3 known by fans as Boost Mode and the mechanic in Sonic GT is that, it's not something you can activate with a button but it is still related to the Boost, it's basically a Proto-Boost and that is way more sustainable.

    Sonic Forces' controls were worse than the other Modern Sonic games anyway and Sonic Team also made Sonic Adventure which was pretty much open world in Hub Worlds. Open World Modern Sonic fan games even exist which control well so I'm not too worried.

    I do want this game to be completely 3D, I had a friend who owned Sonic Adventure 2 and he noticed that I haven't had too much experience with Sonic in 3D, I played Sonic Forces and Sonic Lost World on the 3DS, When I played Sonic Adventure 2, I was the explorer type for this game when I wasn't supposed to be that, I want a Sonic game that is like what is being talked about, it would be very cool for him, it would be to have kind of Botw kind of open world, I hope Sega makes Sonic's controls very fun.
