  • Thank you to Mark Condon for letting me use his very interesting illustrations of both f-stops and depth of field seen in the links below.

    Hi Everyone,
Welcome back to my UA-cam channel. I hope everyone is well.
Ok, so this is a project I’ve been meaning to upload for a while now, but I’ve been so busy with everything else I haven’t had the time to cover it. The project is something I started when I was 27 years old, 10 years ago. Because of the effort involved throughout the design, the numerous iterations along with several prototypes, I have decided to cover the project in three videos, part 1 (this one), part 2 and a final part 3 to bring better clarity and a better understanding of what it is I am doing. Part 2 will focus on 3D modelling, animations from both the older prototypes to the final prototype, where part 3 will be my unique creation/my piece, the world’s largest aperture.
Ok, so this first video/intro was vital before I started jumping into anything technical. Here, I discuss the aperture from a camera/photography perspective (as the aperture is widely used across the world in this area), but also comparing similarities to the human eye. Moreover, the human eye and a camera use similar optical principles to capture and process visual information, where I demonstrate the differences in the mechanisms they use. The human eye is an incredibly complex and versatile biological system that has evolved over millions of years, while a camera is a technological device designed to mimic some of the eye's functions, where the aperture was of interest for this project. I am seen holding a realistic drawing I sketched of a human eye, without the iris, but instead with a twist to benefit this discussion process. Consequently, the sketch visualises my aperture/diaphragm within an iris of an eye to represent the similar function the iris and the diaphragm have on both the pupil and the aperture, where the pupil is the aperture.
Ok, so I am not a photographer but there’s something about a miniature camera aperture that caught my eye, to the extent I had this weird dream of building one, ‘let’s build a massive mirror finished working aperture’. I then proceeded to build a large aperture/louvre for a ducting system in my garage. The only thing is when I made it, I never put it to any use, and you will see why come part 3. The project involved vast amounts of design, mechanical engineering, high end fabrication with a bit of electrical/electronic engineering incorporated into it. I have created my aperture to be the largest working aperture in the world and the only of its kind on UA-cam, whilst also taking it to higher levels with its high-grade hand finished parts. Hence, you won’t see it anywhere else, or anything close to it.
I also look at important f- stop (aka f-number) measures within photography, where the f-number is a measurement of the ability of any optical device, such as a camera lens or even the human eye, to gather light. It is calculated by dividing the focal length of the system by the diameter of the entering pupil.
In photography aperture is expressed in f-numbers also known as f-ratio or f-stops and it is crucial in defining a photograph's depth of field, rate of light scattering, and exposure. F-stops are a way of describing how open or closed the aperture is. The smaller the f-stop means a larger aperture, while a larger f-stop means a smaller aperture. Thus, a lower f-number indicates a larger relative aperture and more light entering the system, whereas a higher f-number indicates a smaller relative aperture and less light entering the system.
With my aperture, due to its large size, a small f-number means the aperture in fully opened position requires somewhere for the aperture’s diaphragm (blades) to fall back into (housing or surround). With a camera aperture, they are much smaller and can fall back into the designed lens casing. I will discuss my design in part 2 and with the unique piece/project in part 3.
To close out the video, I briefly discuss depth of field, diaphragm structures, and shutter speed. The next video (Part 2 - Prototypes) will examine the early designs/initial prototypes, to the final prototype while quickly advancing into constructing such a unique piece/project. I hope you enjoyed this video, please hit the thumbs up if you did. It’s a project I’ve been meaning to cover for years. If you want to see this project evolve, please subscribe, and hit the post notifications bell to see the latest from my channel.
    Enjoy the video 😊
Peace out and much love! Jeffrey
