    We used an Audio-Technica AT899 wired lav mic. Lavs tend to work a bit better for interviews than shotguns since you can put the mic closer to the person's mouth which gives you less ambient sound.

    During the brief demo using the VideoMic Pro, we set the level control on the microphone to +20dB to increase the input level to the camera. We were then able to lower the input levels on the camera to reduce noise from the camera's preamps. Keep in mind also that I'm in a fairly quiet studio and I'm standing fairly close to the camera. If your subject is further away, the sound may be thinner. There is no additional processing on the audio in post production.

    @Turti Produkcija RESPONSE:
    The shock mount and shoe mount are integrated and not removable. They are designed to work expressly with this RODE VideoMic Pro. Other after market mounts are not recommended and may void the manufacturer's 10 year warranty, as well as damage the microphone and/or your camera.

    The Rode VideoMic will connect to your camera via the external microphone jack. To mount it on camera you will need a Pearstone SSA-III AIS Shoe Adapter as SONY uses a dedicated hot shoe (AIS). The B&H model number for the adapter is: PESSAIII. Alternatively you can use a bracket to mount the mic: Bescor VB-50 Universal Shoe Mount Adapter Bracket - B&H # BEVB50.

    Most of the video is recorded using an Audio-Technica AT899 lav mic. There is a brief demo section from 3:13 to 3:32 where we compare the camera's built in mic to the VideoMic Pro so you can hear the difference.

    I believe the camera you mean is the HDR-550V, in which case yes, the Rode VideoMic Pro will work well with that camera. The camera has a mic mini input.

    I just got the videomic pro and it's really good for its size. Plugged into my M-Audio microtrack ii recorder, it just sounds amazing. A very simple way to record high quality sound. I have never tried the Rode straight into my cam though. I prefer to have both soundtracks to mess with.

    RESPONSE:
    I suggest some experimentation and testing since no two live venues or recording situations are identical. For interviews - the 80Hz filter setting may be best. For the music, you should try the -10db pad setting to minimize distortion due to overmodulation.

    @RecklessPranksters There is a microphone input on the camera so the mic will work on it but there is no shoe on the camera to mount the mic itself.
    There are some accessories available to add a shoe off the camera that can help in this case.
    On the B&H site search for B&H # BEVB50 for example

    The SONY HDR-CX550V has an external microphone input that will allow the Rode VideoMic to be connected. We recommend using a shoe adapter to mount the mic to the camera: Bescor - SA-1 Universal Swivel Shoe Adapter B&H# BESA1 Mfr# SA-1.

    Great video! I've bought items from B&H and you guys have been amazing!
    Is there a battery meter or do you have to estimate the remaining power from the 70hr battery life?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  10 років тому +2

      The power indicator LED flashes RED briefly when the microphone
      is first turned on. This changes to GREEN indicating the battery has adequate charge.
      When the battery runs low the LED will remain RED and you should replace the battery. The microphone will work for over ten hours once the RED indicator is lit, however with reduced performance.
      RØDE recommends changing the battery as soon as possible after the LED has turned red.

    Just getting into trying to make my audio more professional for my videos. Been doing research but still confused on the topic. I've been told that balanced XLR is best and to avoid 3.5 but almost everything I've heard about the Rode VideoMic Pro has been good. Do I need to get a pre amp and get XLR for on camera (using Canon T2i) and booming audio or is the Rode VideoMic Pro set-up a good way to go. Thank you for your help.

    Great video. I'd really appreciate some advice. I was looking for a microphone to use with my Sony PJ540. I do vlogging and interviews and future documentaries. I'm still in school and I really cannot afford either of these microphones (I would if I could). Anyhoo, I have a Zoom H2n. Please tell me if I can use this for the time being to accomplish the same or similar results as the two mics discussed here? I purchased the mount you told another reader about (Vello). Thank you in advance.

  • @BandH
    @BandH  11 років тому

    There is no disputing that balanced audio is the best choice overall. But convenience and price are to be considered as well. The Rode VideoMic Pro is a convenient, value priced, "plug and play" solution that delivers astounding results that often compare well with far costlier XLR shotgun mics.
