    Here is a good deal for the Rode Videomic Pro including windshield: www.bhphotovid...
    And here is the Rode SmartLav +: www.bhphotovid...
    The Rode videomic Pro costs $229 and is perfect for both amateurs as well as professionals. This microphone is an upgraded version of the Rode videomic. This time, it’s smaller, more robust and has a nice gain function that will improve you sound quality when filming with DSLR’s.
    I do recommend that you film with manual settings within the camera when you are shooting in a quiet environment. Then you will get less audio noise.
    The Rode smartLav+ is also a nice microphone. It's a lapel/lavalier microphone which you can easily attach to your subject. Use either a sound recorder, or your cellphone to record your subject even if he/her is standing far away from the camera. Download a sound recorder app, like "Audio Recorder Pro" (I have only tested it on windows phone), to capture uncompressed audio in .wav for example in 44000khz or 48000khz.

    Thanks to Thomas Leypoldt for the great music, and Jørn Nyseth Ranum for the nice 200mm shot in the beginning and in the end ;)

      +Andyax To be clear, at the start of the video are you using the Rode smartlav mic? That's nearly crystal clear audio. Yet wireless mics are about $400-600 each. Really?

    I've watched so many videos on sound recording, stayed up hours looking for the best alternative for the short film I'll be shooting. Then Yesterday I had the Idea to check if Andyax has a video on sound, since the other videos are really helpful. Sound was the one thing I've been trying to figure out, I am so lucky you had a video on sound. All my research made me learn a lot about sound, but this is THE ONLY video that actually helped me realize what to buy. This was really useful.
    And the way Eskild talks is so perfect, he sounds like his in a commercial :).

    Thank you for saving me ~$200 and introducing me to the smartLav+ had no idea it was even around.
    This video couldn't have come at a better time, I literally had the Rode Videomic Pro in my cart for the past 24 hours and was hesitant to pull the trigger on it considering the price tag and what I wanted to do with it.

    Hello, I'm a big fan of you. You gave me a confidence to start with filmmaking. I wanted to know about filmmaking, how it is done on the sets and all its aspects, and I got to see on your channel :)
    I'm now confident to start, but still I'm confused about the equipment. Which DSLR would be good for video. I have seen your tutorial on Sony and Canon DSLR, but I want to ask you that should I get a DSLR with APS-C sensor to start with or should I get a 35mm DSLR. I hope both the DSLR are same to operate.

    An other very nice video from you.
    I own and use regularly the smartLav+. Very good lavalier microphone. I use it most of the time with my TASCAM DR-60D. But worth mentioning that mic is equipped with a TRRS jack usable only on smartphone. Not on computer or audio recorder. For those applications, you will need a TRRS to TRS adapter.
    Now, a question about the Videomic Pro. This is a shotgun mic (hypercadioid?), and it is designed to be mounted on the extension shoe of the DSLR. But did you try to mount it on a boom pole ? I'm pretty sure this could be a very interesting combination. I wonder how this could compare to a NTG-2/NTG-3 based audio setting...

  • @talk2rony
    @talk2rony 9 років тому

    Very useful review. Background music was excellent.

  • @Speeder84XL
    @Speeder84XL 10 років тому

    That shotgun microphone is really useful for things stealth recordings from a distance or when you really need to hear what someone says in a noisy environment (I got impressed of the directional effect and you probably will hear better what someone says on the recording than if you're standing at camera position in real life) - but the frequency response is not very good (especially "off axis" - since the background noise is never 100% put out and will get "colored") if you intend to do a real high quality recording
    And those small ones have a horrible frequency responce - the microphones by them selves can be perfectly good, but it's the placement that do it. The body acts like a large screen for sounds coming from behind and partially from the sides. Even if that may be useful for things like interviews (less background noise), the "screen effect" is very different at different frequencies
    - wich "colors" the sound in an unpleasant way. Also - the high frequencies is attenuated, because most of the high frequencies when speaking goes forward, not downward . That further "colors" the sound.
    Just remember that a microphone picks up exactly the sound where it's placed - as long as you dont place the camera also on someones chest, it will not sound natural on the recording. Take any good omnidirectional microphone and place like 50 cm in front of you and talk into it - then put it on the chest and you will hear the difference.
    I just use 2 omnidirectional microphones on my camera (home built using Panasonic WM61 capsules) with 30 cm distance between (to get stereo, without have to deal with tha "proximity effect" of directional microphones that attenuates the bass if not close to the sound source in a large open space) and that works well in 99% of the cases. Except for standing at a distance and use a lot of zoom of cource - in that case that shotgun could do well (for sounds that's mostly midrange). But it's always preferrable to not use to much zoom on scenes where the audio is important (if you don't have the possibility to place a free standing separate microphone close to the souce) - the zoom will make it look closer and there is no ways to make the sound natural if the difference in percieved camera position and microphone position differs too much.
    The microphones shud be as "free hanging" as possible - all objects near the microphones disturb the sound field unless you're into "binaural recording" whith a specially shaped object like a dummy head that "forms" the audio in a disired way. Although the camera house is not a problem - just make shure the microphones is free (for example mounted on a metal stick) and at least 10 cm from it.
    In fact - if it's a good recording and you don't have a crap speakers for playback - it's not harder to hear what someone says on the recording than it is in real life when standing at the cameras position.
    Good to mention the bad audio circuitry in most cameras - I would say that an external recorder is almost always nessesary if you want to have good audio. I use to syncronise the audio by making a "click sound" just before stop recording. The cameras built in audio can then be used as a guide (the time scale is moved so that the click on the camera audio and the good recording accors at the same time) - it saves a lot of time for that work. I have no experience how well mobile phones work for recording, but I can think that they are much better than cameras anyway since they are widely used as high quality play back devices.
    Another thing (except for the auto gain) that's often really bad with the built in circuitry in most cameras, is the "noise floor" with minimum gain - it may be worse than -70 dB in some cases (a good recorder have more than -90 dB). If recording sounds with extreme dynamics like fire works, that can make a huge difference - on a good recording you will hear everything while with bad SNR all the echoes and weaker enviromnent sounds almost "drowns out" in a loud hiss.
