- Calling old school gamers! Have you cranked that nostalgia dial up to 11 yet and checked out Colossal Cave? This reimagining of the 1975 text based adventure by Hall of Famer Roberta Williams brings the treasure hunting of a vast and expansive cave to a 3D experience. Best of all, this game is available for PS5, Xbox Series S, Meta Quest 2, Steam, and as we look at here, the Nintendo Switch.
We were provided a key for the game, but the opinions of this video are solely our own based on our gameplay experience. Huge thank you for the chance to not only review, but to experience such a gaming classic renewed for a modern audience!

I can't say I have played it before, really cool to see a video about it!
It's such an interesting way to revisit a text-based adventure; really hope to see more of these legacy games reintroduced like this.
That looks very cool. It's an interesting game for a remake.
They did great with it--and it's fun, so long as you know what you're in for; no modern day hand holding here!
I really like the idea of bringing back legacy games like these, text based adventures otherwise lost to history, and introducing them to a new generation of gamers.
Nice video with a great honest review. As someone with ADHD the sound of getting lost etc is something I won't be able to cope with lol , I would get frustrated very fast and just quit , especially getting lost in a 'cave'. I understand the throw back to older games for that, but maybe it should have been an option to turn on navigation help if you need it . Then you could just play for the puzzles and whatnot and still enjoy it . That's just my take .
Honestly, that's not a bad idea; with how much gaming has changed, something more to experience the story may be nice because as you said, frustration could come along very easily.
It's got its pros, but certainly some cons--though in any event, I really enjoy the idea of remaking games like these (text based adventures) versus something that came out only a decade ago (looking at you Last of Us ha ha)
@@DoYouNerd oh yeah I love the idea of remaking these games, I grew up with pc games especially early point and click games. Not gonna lie at first I was so against the last of us remake but now I love it , not really for the graphics but the cool accessibility options
@@loco_Fox To be fair--we have no place to speak because we picked up TLOU Part 1 as well. lol It's too good of a game to not revisit anytime they re-release it. ha ha
This game is on Limited Run right now!
That's right--it might be a great physical addition to the collection too. #PhysicalForever !
That's what brought me here!
@@svartedauden3566 YES! So happy to see more physical games for future preservation!!
Really appreciate the honesty on this one guys. I'd rather go into a game knowing what some of the gripes could be and working past it. Haven't played either this or the original. I'm wondering if it would be something I enjoy....hmmm
I think for you guys it would make for a potentially fun, drunken group experience. I'd definitely like to see more text-based adventures get this sort of treatment though, to continue and introduce their legacy as many of them are what made gaming what it is now.
@@DoYouNerd I mean, we're pretty good at turning any game into a drinking game 😁
I used to play Zork on the Commodore 64 lol. This game looks interesting. I want a Zork game!
I think it'd be great to see some of the classic text adventures get a new lease on life like this. Also:
"Only Santa Claus goes down chimneys." lol
I super like the graphics on this
What about YOU? How back in the day was your gaming, did you ever play any text based adventures?
@@DoYouNerd Tunnels of Doom on the Texas Instrument w the cassett tape for the cartridge. Now what you got? lol
@@backinthedaygamer Dude, that's awesome! Sadly mine mostly came from *whispers* emulation. BUT, I always check cassettes in thrifts and flea markets; for good music, but also games, just in case!
Nice review I just subscribed 😊
Thank you and thanks for joining us! It was a lot of fun getting lost in the cave on this one; might be time for a return!
Being a half centennial, I played my fair share of Text Adventures on the Speccy back in the day, so I love this idea ❤
Now YOU were somebody we thought would fully appreciate this, not only the history, but the bringing it back to a new audience! We'd love to see more text adventures get this sort of treatment.
Looks like fun!
It's pretty interesting, especially with a few extra people in the room helping figure things out.
Awesome review guys!
Thanks--out of our comfort zone, but fun to help bring this game to light.
Zork is #1
"This space intentionally left blank."
LOL
One thing that is interesting about text based games was the comebacks that were programmed in when you would put in a command incorrectly, did you notice this game having any quirky charm like that? Or is it a straight forward adventure game at this point?
While not on the complete same level, there certainly is some quirky charm like that; certain interactions only happening with or without specific items in your inventory. Or snide comments like finding a huge gold nugget at the bottom of some stairs only for it to mock how you won't be able to get it out. They really layered in some great charm that took the place of the lack of full-on text command play, so it's nice the merit of the original still has a hold here.
This really looks like a game to sit back and get lost in!
Ha ha--literally! For real though, I would easily get turned around, but more and more I got the hang of certain nuances that really helped (dropped items as map markers, for example).
MetalJesus work with the creators of this game at Sierra online.
Hey, that's right! I think he even checked this game out; bet it was like stepping back in time for him!
