Jackie and Shadow are letting go and continue their incubation withdrawal process. Jackie stopped incubating on 4/8 while Shadow still sits on the eggs during the day occasionally and takes night shifts. They have been leaving the nest seemingly unattended for longer and longer periods of time.

It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
When eggs don’t hatch, Jackie and Shadow may start withdrawing from incubation eventually (they usually over incubate for several weeks, details can be found in our Activity Log). Withdrawal is always a process and it happens gradually with longer and longer breaks. Shadow may be a little bit more stubborn than Jackie (this is something we have observed in the past). Left unattended, the eggs may eventually be scavenged by ravens or other animals. The nest cameras are live 24/7/366 weather and maintenance permitting.

I ugly cry every time I see how committed they are and what could've been. They've both taught me so much over these last several weeks. The only solace I find in this is that I know Shadow and Jackie are both still alive, healthy and thriving...together...and that their story is sooo very far from over 🥰

I know what you mean. I am heartbroken and it has been heartbreaking to see when Jackie came to the realization….and then her trying to get Shadow to realize. It was super heartbreaking to see her “bury” her eggs she so fiercely protected and incubated and then see her leave and then ugly cry also when Shadow still came back and stayed with their eggs. 🥺😭😖

This is what I tell myself too, when feeling a little down.. Jackie and Shagow are healthy and thriving and doing good.. 🙏
Shadow is particular about what stick he picks, he always seems to get a stick with a curve to it that will wrap around their nest. I love Jackie and Shadow and this channel ❤

Love them with the sticks 😂 Shadow the decorator & Jackie likes to bring a tree lol seriously some of those twigs / sticks look sore to snap with beaks but obviously it isn't! Just in awe & ma wee pal Shadow I'd like to know his hairdresser I swear his Fluffy head is different from the rest of the eagles 😂 Bless the Dynamic Duo 🦅 🦅☘️👌
If I had one word to describe Jackie, it would be Resilient - able to take things in stride.
Shadow, on the other hand - Bringer of sticks, Nest Fixer and Branch Manager, Provider of Feesh , Egg-Sitter Supreme, King of Dad Duty, where would I end? 🤷♂ 🦅
Jackie has done at least 80% of the egg sitting and 100% of the egg laying, 😅. I consider her the reigning queen of the eggs. 😊

Oh! So that's how he gets sticks. ~ Jackie is something else, trying to get Shadow off the nest. Guess she's trying to help him let go. ~ My teachers are going to be excited to see me back studying. ~ I'll be sad, not see "our eagles" every day. I'll be checking in though. Thanks to all the MODS, Cam Op people, FOBBV and all those involved in this fantastic adventure of Eagle Watching. In the meantime, I'll be praying for a better outcome next year.
Magnificent birds! Jackie and Shadow may not have had success this year, but there is always next year. There is a nest I see in my travels, it is high and at the crossroads of two freeways. Last year, they didn’t seem to be successful. But this year? Perhaps they are, I saw them today on the nest and in the tree nearby, both tending. So hopefully this is a good year for them. Everything in nature is about balance, as it should be in our lives as well.

My heart aches and breaks for them both. And especially now for sweet Shadow. It’s still SO very hard for him to give up on his babies. Jackie keeps trying but it’s just harder for Shadow to come to the realization. I have cried so much just the month and a half I got involved in watching these two amazing and majestic eagles. How I wish so VERY hard that those eggs would hatch by some huge miracle. It was such a brutal winter for all of them. And even more for those eaglet’s that didn’t even get the chance to be born. 😖🙏🏻💔💔💔💔💔

Oh, I have memories of Jackie doing the same thing last year. She is so gentle with him but always persistent as well. We will all hope for a better outcome next year. Thanks for all of the times that you have been so faithful to capture and share moments with us, Cali, both the sad and the happy. We greatly appreciate you and FOBBV.

Shadow is indeed a Stickmaster 🏆 amazing how he was climbing and flying around their tree 🌲 Poor Jackie and Shadow 😢 I wish they could have had their dream family 🥚🐣🐥 this year! Jackie is so gentle 💝 to Shadow and I hope for both of their sakes that he can let go ❤🩹

I can’t believe what I just witnessed. Told myself not to look at the nest cam but of course I did …and there was shadow and a few seconds later Jackie arrived and actually put her wing around him. I’m praying she’ll remain patient with him. So sad. 😢

I agree. Nobody can ever convince me that they don't have feelings. THEY DO! ❤
Has anybody noticed or is it my imagination... How they're flying in and out of the nest is a little bit different lately? They used to land on the front porch and then hop in from there and lately they've just been flying straight from the edge of the nest out into the wide open? Also they seem to be coming in the back door a lot more too?
Their approach to take offs and landings depends a lot on the wind. They use it to their advantage and they are masters of the wind. I remember Jackie at times in past seasons was crash landing almost in the nest from the back porch and the right side of the nest. Haven't really seen her coming in hot this year at all, but the sticks are built up so much higher than last year! The back and front porch are totally different now. The nest is always a work in progress.

To me, we ve all enjoyed the awesome clips of JACKIE N SHADOW doing what they do day and nite. WOULDA been sooo exciting to see little ones, but not this yr. Hopefully they'll be okay after they realize it's time to leave the nest... they're getting closer. I certainly know lm gonna be back next season like many of you!
