Close-up of Owl Chick and Intruder Flyby | 3.5.24

- We got a nice close-up of our little owlet. We can see the closed eyes (the chicks are blind at birth), and we could also make out the tiny egg tooth on the tip of its beak - they use this to break free of the egg. We think we see a tiny hole in the remaining egg. Also, an intruder flew by the nest and spooked the female. We tried to ID the bird, but we're not sure what it was. The female gave a great open-wing display as you see in the video.

Is the female bigger than the male?
Yes, female Great Horned Owls are bigger
Do you have barn owls in the vicinity?
I could be completely wrong, but when I zoomed in and slowed the play speed, it looked like the same coloring and shape of a barn owl.
Not really - our refuge manager speculated it could be a Cooper's hawk
the wing flapping sounded like some type of duck.
