Protip for PS5 pro owners : if you find the 60fps of the pro mode strangely blurry, just put off the 120hz option in the console menu. For some reason the console wants to run 60 fps modes at 120 fps in some games (f1 24, Dying Light 2..) when the option is set on Automatic, so you might need to put that off until Sony fix this.
The 120hz option in the console menu only works with games with an actual in game 120fps mode...these modes usually lower resolution or use dynamic resolution scaling to hit or come close to that framerate target and even though the PS5 pro has PSSR it will still appear lower resolution than the 60fps mode which is at a higher resolution all the time. Neither F1 or Dying Light appear blurry , to me at least, but they are definitely running at a lower resolution than the 60fps mode most if the time. Turning off the 120hz mode at the console level will lock you out of the 120fps in game option in all games so I don't recommend turning it off at the console but if you want it off for those specific games then you should also see the 120fps option (usually a unlock framerate option) in the visuals menu of the game. Turning it off in game will lock that game to 60fps and give you the higher resolution all the time. Since 120hz is not a selling point for me for singleplayer games I usually turn it off with the only exceptions being with those games where the unlocked framerate option can be used on the fidelity mode to force the framerate closer towards 60fps (example Spiderman 2, or Ratchet and Clank where the unlocked framerate option allows you to play the game in fidelity Pro mode within the VRR window at 60fps). At any rate it's not a bug or something that Sony needs to fix.

At his point, consoles should just give us an option to run games at 1080p, 1440p or 4K with FSR/TSR/PSSR in Quality, Balanced or performance mode. Give the player more options. Some people have high refresh rate 1080p displays and others have 60hz 4K displays. I'm sure there are some people playing their console on a 1080p 144hz monitor that don't care about the resolution and would prefer 1080p with as much frames as possible... even turning on Quality upscaling to try and max out their monitor. Which I'm sure the CPU would be pegged before reaching those frames. But for people that play FPS games it would be ideal
100% If nothing else, simply unlocked frame rates with VRR should have been standard for every game this generation. Instead, it takes a pro model console and a select few studios (insomniac for example) to really push these basic features and give them any kind of exposure.
Exactly, since to me, as of now, the PS5 Pro is just able to do better, antialising be able to use PSSR, but I feel Sony can do that on the PS5 with probably having it at Perfomace or Balance mode. It would be better than FSR. Sure, it uses more graphic power, but at least give us that on the base console instead of paying $700 for better antialiasing.
Why would you let a thumbnail dictate anything is beyond me, even more so when digital foundry does great work when it comes to covering the games they are wanting to focus on. So by now, you should be fully aware that they will bring their findings and evidence which is the whole point of the video. Not "let me check the thumbnail to see if it's worth my time and or if I even see a difference". Go touch grass.
Yes. The shadow map flickering is the issue causing the instability, not image upscaling. It seems that PSSR also scales the shadow map not just the final image. As Sony filed patent for use of Pssr directly on compressed data structure, it seems that is already applied to the shadow maps. But to the shadow map it is causing problems. It seems that DLss and Pssr are doing different things here, so may not be apple to apple comparison.

I don't notice much difference at all in my testing. Most PS5 pro games look worse in fidelity mode. PSSR noise and shimmering is an issue for most games. Tested GT7 this past weekend and it looks better on the base PS5 than the Pro to me in Graphics / RT mode. PSSR softens the image too much for my liking. I'd rather not have ray traced reflections but have a sharper overall image. That's just me though.
I'm loving my Pro. It's not just about the graphics. The system runs so much smoother. I've noticed a difference in every game I play. I'm definitely not disappointed and the Pro will continue to get better as more games become Pro enhanced

You and everyone else who has left negative comments about TLoU coverage are perfect examples of that. You don't want this content but watched it anyway, adding to the view count and making it a more popular video. I would suggest in the future to try and not watch the content you do not want. I find the same issue on some shadows in stellar blade. I think Pssr is used to add details to textures and shadows maps. It got problems on low res shadow maps. But this is low level ML implementation in the games program which is quite impressive than just DL upscale the final image.
I think OG Sony titles are a suboptimal idea for "benchmark" since they are very, very optimized. Star Wars Outlaws, AC unity, the Witcher, Matrix Demo, Elden Ring or BG3 (Act3) are more likely to show the 12 - 30% boost. Which always leads to the question: is that enough for that price? Perhaps for like some of you Part 2 left a bad taste in my mouth however I still came back and played Part 1 again on the PS5 on launch day at full retail. I really adored this game but was a tad disappointed in the remake. That said it was also a fitting farewell to the past, a final toast to one of my favourite games. I've replayed it 3x and frankly that's enough... The fact I still see this game being brought up time and time again like a dried up lemon getting squeezed for every drop is mostly disappointing me in the developers of games who seem to all but have given up. I genuinely can’t care about TLOU improvements anymore. They’re going to re-release this game for every PlayStation console from now until the end of time
i have to laugh at the comment section about PS5 Pro price as there are people who buy Pro controllers at $200 and no one bats an eye yet a console is $200 more and everyone is suddenly broke.
watch the video on a 4K TV or at least a 32 HD ready (1366x768) one, and you'll see clearly how they look bad and worse than any similar 360p or 720p movie you play on them... the 144p and 240p for your Game Boy and CRT TV respectively are not good enough, you need a 25 years old good monitor or at least 15 years old LCD planel... that or a $3000 PC to see how even a $1500 PS5 Ultra will have problems vs PC native rendering at 4K.
Just the fact that FSR2 can hold its own against PSSR is already a disappointment for me. This means developers could have simply added FSR2 to their games on the base PS5, and get 95% of the benefits of PSSR. Making most of the upgrades that the PS5 Pro is getting redundant.
@@mandrews6282 and here I thought 1.0 was supposed to mean "complete" FSR wasn't released with new (and expensive) hardware. You can excuse a free feature taking a while to get to a good spot. I'm not so sure that should be the case for the PS5 Pro and PSSR
the reason fsr2 holds its own is because on PC they use FSR Quality mode and from 1440p native, the problem is that most console games use FSR2 ultra performance from 720p native, TLOU2 already had a great perf mode so you won't get huge diff with PSSR
@@Aid3nn33 oh yah my bad. I just checked and DF claims it runs at 1196p using a nearest neighbor method of cleaning up the image. I just assumed in 2024 they had to have used FSR for a UE4 game so this is even more baffling now. Lol.
One upscaler to rule them all. It's DLSS. Once again it cannot be emphasized enough how much this matters. You can play on performance setting and still get image quality at least as good as what PSSR is doing, and way better than FSR. That unlocks so much extra framerate on mid to lower end cards it's hard to really compare PS5 Pro to Nvidia GPUs. If a game has DLSS a pretty slow, lower end class of Nvidia GPU dishes out at least as good an end result. On Alan Wake 2 one of the most advanced hardest to run games pixel for pixel PS5 Pro is no way any better than a four year old RTX3070.
But we don't want one upscaler to rule them all, especially if it runs only on a specific hardware... DLSS is the best yes but I don't want it to "rule". AI based upscaling can become better over time, be it PSSR or XeSS and it will. DLSS was garbage in its 1.0 version and even 2.0 version had quite a lot of image quality issues. Nvidia spent a lot of years and time to refine DLSS to become what it is now. It was not a 1 step success.
@@ZratP It's not Nvidia's fault everyone is múltiple generations behind them. The Best You can hope is what AMD Will do with FSR 4 next year. No thank you I don't want to support the biggest price gouger in hardware in the world as of the time of writing this. But it's a free gamers Republic, you can buy Nvidia all day, and I support you.
It's interesting how the TLOU games have especially clear foliage when using PSSR when that's an area that other PSSR titles are showing the most issues with (Jedi Survivor, Star Wars Outlaws and more). Curious. I wonder why that is.
PSSR is used to upscale from 1440p in TLOU. That is a very solid baseline resolution that most upscalers would turn into a 4k-like image... but in Jedi Survivor and Star Wars Outlaws, it's from an internal resolution below 1080p (at least in the performance modes). It seems like PSSR attempts to maintain a lot of sharpness in the image and that will cause flickering when it fails to fill in the gaps of pixels. DLSS has a slightly softer resolve which will grant blurrier images at 4k but also a lot more stable images at 1080p or below. For most people, I think image stability is preferable to additional sharpening.
@ Yeah, I guess, maybe? But then you have games like Alan Wake 2 or Dragon Age Veilguard which have similarly low internal resolutions (around 900p) and they don’t suffer from foliage shimmering like Survivor or Outlaws. (They have some other issues, admittedly.) So I don’t even know if that’s what causing it or if we can even blame it on that.
Cool another version of the last of us to play… There’s like a dozen ways to play this game now but only 2 games in the franchise, completely ridiculous.
But PSSR gives noticeably sharper yet cleaner image vs DLSS with less ghosting albeit with slightly less stability like at 9:20 and 9:54. How come DF ignored all of these and straightaway called DLSS flawless?
sorry to break you fantasy, but PS5 Pro is on track to sell more than PS4 Pro at the same time, it's selling more than Sony's estimation, it sold more in 1st week in Japan than PS4Pro 1st week and also is the nr1 selling console on multiple amazon county pages, keep the hate flowing
Holy shit the oversharpening is bad at times here, should be an option to turn down sharpening so it doesn't look like a showroom TV lol. Also, GOW Ragnarok showed PSSR costing 2ms compared to the TAAu, 3.5ms is Alot pricer. How much does 4k TSR/FSR2 cost on these console millisecond wise?

Neither F1 or Dying Light appear blurry , to me at least, but they are definitely running at a lower resolution than the 60fps mode most if the time.
The Last of Us was the first game i played on the ps4 when i got it back in 2014. Such a good/emotional game. Comparing how it looks now on the Pro to when i played it is crazy. The graphics have come so far. Definitely on of PlayStations best ip's imo.

These stability issues on PSSR are really concerning. It's one thing to get them on third party games like SH2 where probably they didn't have any instructions on implementation etc, but it showing up on first party games is massively worrying.
I just hope that when they do update PSSR and launch like PSSR 2.0, 2.1, etc that they go back and update all the old games too, like we can do on PC with DLSS dlls.
That is actually a good question... will the new PSSR iteration be automatically added without devs input ? I would be surprised byt it but it would be pretty cool !

Stellar blade
FF rebirth

You have to remember that Digital Foundry is a business. Their business relies on people watching their content. The more eyes on their videos, the better.
So while it's perfectly okay to want less coverage on TLoU and more coverage on other games, more people are going to tune in for this. You and everyone else who has left negative comments about TLoU coverage are perfect examples of that. You don't want this content but watched it anyway, adding to the view count and making it a more popular video.
I would suggest in the future to try and not watch the content you do not want. Rather than making the video more likely to motivate more TLoU content.

Is it just me or DLSS seems to absolute trash for this game (TLOU part 1), making PSSR looks really good in comparison? because many of the artifact we saw were things that I saw in DLSS 2.0 like that awful ghosting on the goose 9:14.
Exactly 💯 true I noticed the ghosting too and when I played this on pc and now on pro I really don't know how did he come up with dlss being better on this title
if you use preset E it will be miles better than what you see here
DLSS is just pure shit. All upscaling techniques are pure shit. Native only. With better AA than TAA obviously.
3:35 I noticed the same issue on the backside of the Ration Distribution Center in Seattle Day 1. It did look really bad and couldn’t be ignored. I hope they can fix this bug with the shadows in the Pro mode. Because besides this bug the Pro mode looks und plays incredible.
Especially when a PC version does excist.

Just the fact that FSR2 can hold its own against PSSR is already a disappointment for me. This means developers could have simply added FSR2 to their games on the base PS5, and get 95% of the benefits of PSSR. Making most of the upgrades that the PS5 Pro is getting redundant.

FSR wasn't released with new (and expensive) hardware.

Yeah, what Nvidia did with that technology feels like black magic...truly insane
But we don't want one upscaler to rule them all, especially if it runs only on a specific hardware...
DLSS is the best yes but I don't want it to "rule".
AI based upscaling can become better over time, be it PSSR or XeSS and it will.

Yeah PS5 pro is really struggling to plead its case
So what is the best setting to play the game on PS5 pro ?
