    Episode 465 of Love At First Scent.
    This was a UA-cam Live broadcast streamed on Monday 13th May 2024. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
    In this episode, I interviewed one of the most revered perfume experts in the world, Michael Edwards, about the publication of his brand new book, American Legends. We talked about the growth and development of the American fragrance industry, why a certain Tom Ford doesn't feature in the book and why a relatively unknown figure called Ernest Shiftan is described by Edwards as the "father of American perfumery".

    What a lovely interview, thank you Mr. P! I must admit I had never heard of Michael Edwards much before, but I ordered Perfume Legends from his website straight away! Next June 11th I am giving a little workshop/presentation about (vintage) perfumery of my own in a local vintage and curiosa shop where I sometimes find vintage bottles. I think Michael's book might be very helpful as I am giving shape to that, so I hope it will arrive in time! :D

    How much money did the Lauder family contribute for the writing of this book? It’s patently obvious. As for Giorgio- people wearing it were banned from restaurants in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles for its noxious smell- yet Mr. Edwards talks about Giorgio as a great creation. Very disappointed in Michael Edwards.

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  3 місяці тому +5

      Thanks for watching.
      According to stories, people were ‘banned’ from wearing Dior Poison as well, but that’s another scent many people adore.

    • @greymomma
      @greymomma 3 місяці тому +1

      Giorgio was extremely popular, but also extremely bold and fragrant. I don’t know your age, so don’t know if you experienced the time it was popular. But I remember going into the office wearing it with fellow ladies wearing it. Yes, in small areas, multiple ladies wearing Giorgio, especially with some who had over sprayed, there were complaints. It wasn’t a noxious fragrance. But it was bolder than the fragrances before. This was the start of bold scents. But it was also the beginning of when barriers on perfumers were discussed because of all the bold perfumes. People’s allergies and discomfort were brought into play. The time was big, bold, beautiful fragrance!! But unfortunately it created, or at least opened the door, to cautions on future perfume ingredients and creations.

    • @greymomma
      @greymomma 3 місяці тому

      @@Persolaise you’re so right Mr. P. The whole time was bold fragrance. Unfortunately it also was the beginning of talks on ‘allergies’, and peoples’ discomfort in work places etc., and thus began the “perhaps we should consider banning some ingredients”. :(

      Not sure you have a right to be disappointed. He doesn’t owe you anything. I think Estee Lauder had one of the best reputations for quality in the 90s. I was young, and anything Estee Lauder was “super fancy,” a dream product.

  • @greymomma
    @greymomma 3 місяці тому +4

    I'm so upset I couldn't watch live! :( Estee Lauder brought wonderful perfumes to life! I think she doesn't get the attention she deserves. Youth Dew was one of my favorites when it came out. The bath oil was beautiful! Your bed sheets would pick up the scent and going to sleep would be extra special even when you didn't wear it. :) Antonia's Flowers! What a pretty scent that was! I also remember her 'Floret' which was a combination of florals including Sweet Pea, with Tuberose and a fruity note. I hope the new Flowers is a nice as the vintage! He's so right about the department stores. The counters were filled with beautiful perfumes! Gift sets came out for Christmas or when that new perfume came out. Wonderful time! :) Giorgio!! Yes! It's gone in my opinion. Not the bold, beautiful scent that it was! I'm thankful for my vintage bottle, though I admit I don't wear it often, and then only a quick spray. LOL What a wonderful show Mr. P.!! Would love to see a second interview with Mr. Edwards.
