I’ve seen this movie at least a dozen times and I’m still not burned out on it yet. Imo, it’s definitely John Carpenter’s best film. Great cast, great cinematography and great music. Plus a very bleak ending that perfectly caps things off. In Space, no one can hear you scream. But in Antarctica, no one will come to your aid.

Watched it in an empty cinema and stayed in to watch it three times over (one could do that in the uk at the time).
Day after I convinced two of my school mates to wag school to sneak in the fire exit and we also watched it three times.
They were as blown away as I was.
A perfect film, up there with the very best of e'm.
    In my opinion of course.
    👊

I was 16 when this came out and one of my buddies saw it Friday night, told us all about it and took us Saturday night. We watched it twice that night and came back the next night, etc. All told we must have seen it at least a couple dozen times that summer, at drive ins and regular theaters. Still the film that I've seen the most times in a theater and in my top 5 most-watched all time. Also one of only 2 movies that ever made me nauseous, during the autopsy of the 2-headed thing. Other movie is Natural Born Killers, due to some of the editing. Not a knock on NBK at all though.

Dude, that's crazy ironic! Me and my school buddy used to cut school and sneak in through a fire exit at the Lowes Theater in New Orleans. We would sneak into all three theater rooms and watch Alien, The Thing, and Prophecy in one day. we were the only ones in the matinee times with 4 other people. We snuck in and saw Alien and the Thing like 5x throughout the week!

    We need a sequel....
A truly great sequel where The Thing escapes the Antarctic and makes it to a populated military base in the mainland. There is no escape. No hope of stopping it as The Thing multiplies across the face of the earth and absorbs every biological lifeform.
A true dystopian ending of the end of mankind.

    • @allsortofmovies
      @allsortofmovies  Місяць тому +5

Yes, although it could be difficult, as the final film is cut differently than the original story and script was intended. Some events have been completely changed into the film, some scenes have been filmed to replace the missing scenes, etc.
It would be interesting to see what the workprint of the film is, I think it will be different in content and plot compared to the final film.
At some point, a video or video series will be released on the All Sort of Movies channel, where the story and background of the movie Thing (1982) will be broken down. It will be interesting!
A similar video series is from the film Alien (1979).(ua-cam.com/video/niG7RQiacS4/v-deo.html)

There is a single player video game that continues the where this story left off and if you liked the movie the video game is worth the play. I actually jumped many times while playing it as it is dark and spooky. You play a character from yet another expedition that discovers the destroyed camp and go through similar scenarios that these characters do as the plot unfolds learning what happened to the camp.

  • @Darhan62

The effects were impressive at the time, but looking back on it now, you can tell they were just effects, not actually some alien that could transform its cells and organs and sprout teeth or tentacles in an instant. The 2011 prequel, of course, used a bit too much CGI, which ages even less convincingly than the old practical effects, given that CGI on a budget looks noticeably like CGI, particularly given the limitations of the technology at the time. All that said, the acting in the 1982 film was really good, imho. The characters were believable and consistent, and that sold the situation they were in, making you suspend your disbelief. Also, the dog was a great actor. You could just imagine some alien intelligence behind it, merely using the form of the dog as it plotted to take over the American camp.

The uncredited actor..., the Dog-Thing! Really was a surprise when it transformed into the "Thing"! (Remember "Alien" had just come out 3 years ago), people were subject to a whole radical change in sci-fi movie effects..., from hokey rubber monsters to the horrifying gruesomeness of these other-worldly terrors!

Look at Assault on P13 and its two sequels. Closely modelled on Hawks’ Rio Bravo trilogy. Apart from Big Trouble in Little China, a catalogue of great films.
