  • A thickener is what makes a grease, a grease. It’s the main difference between a lubricants or oil, and a grease. In common parlance you may have heard of thickeners being referred to as metal soaps - the underlying chemistry is the same as that of regular hand soap, so here we explain what that means and the basics chemistry of how a thickener is made.
    Here at Lubrication Expert we take a first-principles approach to lubricants and greases; helping industry understand lubrication technology and pushing the limits of what is possible.

    I got here trying to understand differences in lubrication, just to buy a cheaper grease for a hobby.
    Now I'll never look at lubrication the same and I'll be going into manufacturing engineering....
    Thank you for being an amazing resource.

    Some my question what product would you recommend using for a regular grease like ( lucas Lithium grease) to change it from nlgi #2 to say a #3 or #4?

      Hi! I try not to recommend products because there’s too many variables. I’d probably need to know way more information and actually see the application. Sorry I can’t help!

    I buy red lithium complex grease couple weeks ago. After 3 weeks,grease color change to dark in the place. Do you think this bad quality grease? I always keep closing before saving.

    • @LubricationExplained
      @LubricationExplained  3 роки тому +1

      Good question - sometimes that is an indication of rapid oxidation, sometimes it's perfectly normal. The first check would be - spread the grease thinly on a white piece of paper. In some instances grease that looks black is actually a very very dark shade of red. We covered this in the following video: ua-cam.com/video/rjLjnKYnwLA/v-deo.html

    • @LubricationExplained
      @LubricationExplained  2 роки тому +1

      Are you asking if you can switch a soap-based grease for a polyurea grease in an application? Or are you wanting to make grease but change the thickener when keeping the base oil and additive pack the same?

    Nice video.
    Please add what B means in the compatibility matrix.
    And F, P, VG in the properties matrix.
    I would enjoy a video which explains, how carbon-chains provide lubrication on a molecular level.
    And how some greases are extreme pressure resistant on a molecular level.

    • @LubricationExplained
      @LubricationExplained  3 роки тому +2

      Hi! “B” is borderline, “F” is fair, “P” is poor and “VG” is very good.
      As for the other video ideas, sounds great! We’ve got a bunch of videos in the works but I think they should address what you’re looking for.

      Good question - do you mean for wheel bearings? I know that the Formula One Teams use the off-the-shelf Lithium Complex, Synthetic Base oil 220cSt greases. I guess if it's good enough for them it should be good enough for everyone?

    • @shanepipkin4041
      @shanepipkin4041 2 роки тому +1

      yes high temp bearing what is 220cst? I just need good high quality hard to find one not alot info or tests out

    • @LubricationExplained
      @LubricationExplained  2 роки тому +2

      220cSt is the base oil viscosity. Most wheel bearing greases will be this viscosity grade.

    I mixed lithium with polyuerea can I go back

    • @LubricationExplained
      @LubricationExplained  2 роки тому +2

      If you've already mixed them and there's been no negative effects, then it's probably safe to mix them in reverse. There's no good answer on whether two greases will be compatible or not without physical testing.
