This really is a unique find tho, most ww2 bring backs are crappy military blades that were pumped out to be last resort sidearms, very rare for a high level fuedal era blade, likely comissioned privatly by a noble family. Something tells me allot of men died in the process of that sword sitting in some suburban nevada home.

The Hizen Yukihiro that made this sword is listed on Wazamono which shows the grade of authoritative cutting ability. The Wazamono is the lowest of the four classes, but it is better than a general sword. By the way, the most excellent grade is Saijo Owazamono, and Kotetsu, a swordsmith, is famous as a swordsmith who corresponds to the highest grade. The valuable sword owned by the feudal lord was not on the Wazamono list because it was not tested for cutting ability. For example, Masamune and Go Yoshihiro are not on the list.
It has a history of being used for executions, which in those times, there's a high chance the people executed were innocent too. And that's just from the signature on the blade. Who knows what the original owner did with it afterwards too. Samurai were not very nice people, especially to the classes below them. 😂

I love that most of the older swords taken in are properly stored in a shirasaya. They are used for lomg term storage as opposed to the traditional tsuki(handle) and saya(scabbard). They also remove the Tsuba (handgaurd). The shirasaya casing is made to control the humidity since the swords are subject to rust. In a shirasaya the sword will still need maintenance but much less maintenance as opposed to a sword stored in a lacquered saya. :) love how they were cared for before they ended up here

The scripture that was shown in the video said it was tested by the executioner by the way of cutting through 2 stacked human bodies on the date of July 21, 1660 (Japanese calendar, probably in August, not July). So it’s as real as it gets, and typically passed down from father to son. I don’t think it would appear randomly in some American’s home. My guess is that her grandpa must have saved someone important back in WWII for him to give this to grandpa.

After WW2 occupation forces in Japan confiscated swords. Which must have brought in to the US by the officers who served there.

Interesting enough the sword was missing the habaki, the gold piece that sits just above the Tsuba, they help seal the blade in the saya
a tsuki is a thrusting motion you do with the sword, the handle is called tsuka
