Yes, it was, tangentially. The Beatles were superstars, Tolkien was still living & refused to sell the Beatles the rights. As much as I would have liked to see Beatles as LOTR, I can't say i blame Tolkien.
Okay, here is your Lord of the Ring Question that will determine your true level of Tolkienry! Here it comes! Ready? "Which Lord of the Rings character from the movies is Snooki's favourite?"
Utterly guessing, eh Stephen? That is literally the only way to play that game on the later questions. The utter randomness is sometimes completely astounding...
Second part? Meaning Valaquenta? Of course I had to look it up, but still wanted to post it. "Therefore Ilúvatar gave to their vision Being, and set it amid the Void, and the Secret Fire was sent to burn at the heart of the World; and it was called Eä."
One very simple response: Jack-in-the-box. The quiz game on Twitch. I would love, and I mean LOVE, Stephen Colbert to have his own , entirely based on LoTRs trivia.
If you all are expecting a really die-hard Silmarillion question like ‘Name all of the Valar’. Really bad example (sorry). Then no, Scott just asks Stephen about The Lord of the Rings being casted with the stars as the Beatles.
"Of old they were called in song Firinno, Olórin, and Aiwendil, but in the lore of the Eldar that is lost these names were changed, and they were called Mithrandir, Wisest of the Maiar; Olórin, who was a lover of the Eldar that remained, and Irmo in Valinor, Este in the land of Aman, and many other names; Aiwendil, the bird-lover, who was also a friend of the birds." "Valaquenta" of "The Silmarillion" by J.R.R. Tolkien
wow I can't believe HQ is that big. Pretty fascinating to see Scott on the show. And yeah, I've never won once. Only got to the last question once too. god damn american trivia
Yeah I thought so too, and he said something about how more people join but the prize stays the same but the prize used to be 250 dollars and moves up all the time sooo....
That was a garbage question. I was really hoping someone would ask a real difficult Lord of the Rings question that involved the lore of Middle Earth. A question like, "How was the Middle Earth Universe created?" or "Who was the only person in Middle Earth History to ever steal back a Silmaril from Morgoth?" or "How many recorded marriages have there been between Men and Elves?" or "Why do Elves and Dwarves hate each other?" These kinds of questions are GOOD questions to ask Stephen Colbert.
But those aren't hard! 1) The song of Iluvatar, followed by the wars of the creation of Arda to actually fulfill the vision once the Ainur descended. 2) Beren 3) 3. Beren x Luthien, Earendil x Elwing, Arwen x Aragorn, 4) a fairly petty dispute over a piece of jewelry according to the Hobbit, which was augmented according to the Silmarillion by confirming that jewel was a Silmaril.

I feel kind of bad because the tech is pretty awesome. You can have multiple people in a room playing it and they’ll all be synced up. The live answers, all of that is pretty impressive.
I clicked on this because of the LOTR trivia, right away, not even knowing who the guest was and originally not caring. But hey, that's the guy from HQ Trivia, that was a nice surprise (I've played only a few times so the name didn't really stick but I always liked him).
The first section of The Silmarillion (not counting the foreward) is Ainulindale (the Music of the Ainur), so the second must be Valaquenta (the Powers of the World).
03:24 love the reference to the '95 movie Hackers... in case anyone was wondering when he said, "I saw the greatest minds of my generation destroyed..." is a quote from the poem, Howl by Allen Ginsberg. Though in Hackers I think they started with "angelheaded hipsters"... either way, its a cool thing to quote Ginsberg on the Late Show.
It's more about the Beatles than anything else. It's like asking - "Which Chinese outlet sells LOTR knock-offs on 34th street?" ... just because the words LOTR were thrown in doesn't make it about LOTR.
He is right that live broadcasting over the internet -- especially to mobile devices -- is pretty new, and it's actually impressive that they can do that.
