he was so talented... but after that crash.... he was messed up. physically and mentally. I was 13 when this concert took place... I never got to see them. My Uncle got me a tee shirt from one of there last concerts.... I was at a party and someone stole it out of my bag.

Please don't forget the guitar contributions from bassist Leon Wilkeson. That 30-second passage near the end of this song he's practically breaking his fingers on those cables (heavier bass strings) during the speed-up of the tempo.

There is a reason why this band has remained popular all these years. The music they made is absolutely fantastic. It has been said "they didn't write hit songs, they wrote hit ALBUMS" every song on every album is good.
This is THE rock anthem.
The reason there was so many women is because PETER. FRAMPTON was the headliner, he came out after Skynyrd and played a killer 2 + hour set . I was there July 2, 1977 .
We left on Framptons 2nd song... We had a bit of a drive, we were blown away by Skynyrd, and Frampton was playing stuff from "I'm in you". Probably right about the women though.

True, Peter Frampton, as awesome as he was got blown off the stage by Lynyrd Skynyrd. They blew away every single app they opened up for, including the Rolling Stones.

I was there...about 40 feet from the stage. I always look for me, my brother and his friend in the fan shots - but we are buried in the crowd. What a show. Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton....all for less than $20!

The guy in all white who jumps around a lot is Alan Collins. He wrote the solo when he was 16 years old. His story of survival/death is the most amazing tragedy of the whole group.
he had it so rough after the crash....not just physically but mentally too... I was 13 around this time but a couple months later I turned 14... I remember getting the soul survivor album for Christmas
I still say the 1976 performance of Free Bird at Knebworth is the GOAT of their live performances! They were opening for the Rolling Stones who was promoting a new album called Hot Licks. Mick had a tongue shaped catwalk added to the front of the stage and he ordered all the other bands to stay off it! Well, that didn't go over well with lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and for the Free Bird solo, he pulled his guitar army out onto the tongue. It ticked Mick off big time, plus LS had the crowd in such a frenzy, that the Stones refused to come out for hours till the crowd settled down. I would hope this particular performance was one of their worst. I would hope they could at least blame the quality of this performance on them being too drunk or too many drugs to play decently. Watch some live Allman Brothers if you want to see what really good blues rock musicians sound like.
@@rossjoseph3844 TLSB was not a blues rock band and the Allman brothers are great I saw them in concert. But bad mouthing them to promote your choice is childish . LS was one of the tightest playing bands ever
@Mark Hopkins , mostly, I was speaking about this particular performance, which was not good. I know Skynerd has done better performances than this, but this one was out of sync and sloppy. Because Skynerd is considered "Southern Rock" and the ABB are considered to be the band that started the genre, it's a fair comparison. The comparison I was making was that I have never seen the Allmans play a live show and perform this sloppily. And yes, the Allmans are more blues based, but the point is Skynerd did not do a very good job of performing what is a quality song.

I saw ac/dc and UFO for $6.50 . You could go to concerts they were cheap and plentiful. Now you have to plan if you want to go. The eagles started the $100 plus tickets.
@@guystephens2881 even getting into local shows at small bars for no named bands is 10-20 dollars when my band and I played a show at a small bar with 3 others bands with maybe 100 people max it was 15 to get in.
And to be in my teens again through all that!

Go into any Bar or Club in the South after the plane crash that had a Live Band and before the night was through, there would always be somebody standing on a chair or table yelling at the band, ------- *" Hey ! Play Free Bird ".*
The slide guitarist featured in the first half of the song is Gary Rossington who she lost earlier this month and represented the lat remaining OG band member. Gary not only survived the plane crash but also survived the car crash a year earlier that gave birth to the hit "That Smell"... RIP to them all. They are reunited giving a hell of a concert in heaven right now.
As a southern kid raised on a North Florida beach, I graduated from high school in 1977 so we of course chose Freebird to be our senior class song. My oldest son graduated in 2002 and his senior class also chose Freebird for their class song, Pretty Cool!!

Ronnie Van Zant is considered one of the greatest frontmen of all time. He controlled the crowd like you said the group everything most of the time. We hardly even moved arounduran but he had a presence that drew everybody in
On a lighter note guys .. these we're the good ol' days. Carefree, relaxed. No cell phones. No internet. People actually had to get out {and enjoyed it too!} and physically interact with each other. That also included communicating with one another.
I don't know if because more women then men bought the albums back in the day is the true explanation why there seems to be more girls in the crowd .. but we had tons of concerts all year long. The guys we're the ones buying the concert tickets to get the date with that certain girl who wouldn't go unless her best friend and cousin got to go too. Before {some} women we're convinced that it was improper and morally wrong, most actually enjoyed the attention men gave them like holding the door open, complimenting their shoes, telling them how beautiful they we're .. they didn't mind a whistle or two either. No shrinking violets or curling up into the fetal position back than.

In all fairness, this concert was called A Day On The Green and there were several acts that day. Skynyrd was the 2nd to last act that day. Many of the women were there to see a rising heart throb named Peter Frampton. Now I will say I would of gone just for Skynyrd.
The plane crash 3 months later took Ronnie Van Zant who was the bands leader and heart and soul, and Steve Gaines in the red pants and his sister Cassie who sang back up vocals. They were the only 3 stage performers who passed in the crash.
If you want more live Skynyrd there is a whole set from Asbury Park NJ just 10 days or so after this and there are some other live recordings as well from the Knebworth show in England where they opened for the Rollling Stones in 1976.
There are several documentaries on this band, not sure which one you have seen, but the documentary called "If I Leave Here Tomorrow" is the best of them in my humble opinion. If you have not seen it, it is well worth the watch.
Freebird was always the encore as I far as I know. Another song I'm sure you will know is "Sweet Home Alabama" and it was actually the song they played before Free Bird that day. It is excellent as well with several good solos.
Of course you guys are just scratching the surface with Skynyrd and i truly appreciate you both helping to keep their music alive. Looking forward to your next reaction and thank you both for this one.

My babysitter was there on the front row clapping her hands. Now her and I are grandparents. While I didn’t see this live they did show parts of this on tv later that night and this song and performance caused me to fall in love with music and just flat out jamming guitar solos.
I’m 62 years old and have been to more than my share of concerts. This is what stadium concerts were like back in the 70s 🔥🔥🔥. I also love how you spotted the one brother in the front row 😂

After the plane crash, brother Johny took over for Ronnie. For a while he could not bring himself to sing this song- so it was played only instrumentally. WAS too heart breaking too soon after losing his brother, but he eventually was able to sing it in Honor of his Bro. Great band- this song is an anthem for MANY FREEBIRDS!!!

I was there. They called it Day on the Green concerts. On the grass yes, infield no. No cameras, sunscreen or cell phones. We came, we listened, we partied, enjoyed ourselves and made memories that have lasted my entire life...and then the plane crash. We were lucky to have had the band!

Great reaction. I saw them in August 1976 at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium. I was 15 years old. The bill included The J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts & Great Southern (Allman Bros. guitarist), Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton was the headliner. I was about 30 feet from the stage. I will never forget that day.

This was probably a 'Day On The Green" Bill Graham put on 4 or 5 Day On The Green's every summer back in the day. There would be 4 or 5 bands. I went to a few back from 78-81 when I was in The Air Force at Travis AFB.
Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer) Gary Rossington(lead and slide the guy making bird sounds) Allen Collins (Lead and slide in all white center stage) Steve Gains( Lead and slide left side of the stage as you watch it) Leon Wilkeson(Bass) Billy Powell( Piano) Artimus Pyle( Drums) Cassie Gaines,JoJo Billingsley,Leslie Hawkins back up singers called the Honkettes,Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gains, Cassie Gains (brother and sister)and manger Ron Kilpatrick and both pilots died in the crash

A walk back to a time when being a true musician was a prerequisite to be part of bands of the likes of Leonard Skynard, no posers wanna be allowed. One's genuine skillset was the most valued requirement. They will be missed but never forgotten.

I was there with my brother...it was incredible! One of the famous "Day On The Green" concerts at the Oakland Coliseum. This day had the Outlaws, Carlos Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. Sadly the plane crash was just about 3 months later that killed Ronnie, Stephen Gaines and his sister Cassie, one of the backup singers. Very tragic. Was also licky enough to see The Who and the Greateful Dead there as well. Fun times!
RIP- Lynyrd Skynyrd all the band members. The music lives on.
Billy Powell was a classically trained pianist, working as a roadie for the band. One night after a concert he was fooling around, playing the opening riff of Freebird and the rest is history.
Those are all Rock-n-Roll chicks from the 70's...they were INTO it just as much as guys.
The slide guitar player was the last surviving original member, Gary Rossington. He just died two months ago. The drummer in this performance wasn't an original member, he's still out playing. Three members of the band were killed in the plane crash. The singer Ronnie Van Zandt. The guy playing the black Les paul Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines one of the Back up singers. Legend has it that when they wrote this song Allen Collins playing the Gibson Explorer ( triangular shaped guitar) came up with that amazing lead on the first take, right off the top of his head!
His brother took over as lead singer. His brother had the band 38 Special
Donnie was 38 Special, Johnny had The Johnny Van Zant Band.
At the very beginning of the clip, the guitarist making the 'bird' sounds with the sliding guitar .. that is Gary Rossington. He was the last remaining survivor of the OG Skynard lineup before passing away on 3/6/2023. Gary was 71.
Rossington, along with band members Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle survived that terrible plane crash {Senseless really. Plane ran out of fuel. Pilot didn't gas up!} that took the lives of 3 other Skynard band mates .. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Chris Gaines and Gaine's sister plus backup vocals, Cassie Gaines on October 20, 1977.

They had three guitarists who could all solo and all play rhythm. And in this song in particular, they often had two guitars soloing together at the same time, with the third one either playing rhythm or another line that was counterpoint to the main top-level solo, much like a Bach fugue.
Gary Rossington was playing the slide guitar at the beginning, Allen Collins is the one with the Explorer in the white suit and long hair, and then Steven Gaines (an absolutely virtuoso guitar player whom they had recently picked up and who was on their final album and the last couple of tours, and who also was the brother of Cassie Gaines, one of the three women backing vocalists that sang iconic parts with Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Honkettes) was the one on the left. Leon Wilkeson just kills it on the bass guitar; that man had so much stamina it's unbelievable. He was on the far right with the inevitable funny headpiece that he always wore.
I noticed that Billy Powell was playing his black grand piano at this show, and he also has a white one that he used a lot. They would fly these pianos around and of course they would have to be completely tuned again before every concert. And I absolutely love Artimus Pyle on the drums.
If you want to hear a jaw-dropping display of their virtuosity in really good fidelity, check out their song Honky Tonk Night Time Man on their final album before the plane crash, Street Survivors. It will blow your mind.
The plane crash effectively ended Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1977. Ronnie Van Zant, Steven Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines, and some of the crew were killed. The others were injured badly. I was in 9th grade and it totally decimated me and my friends.
This was 3 months before the crash. It happened not far from my hometown. The memorial is a beautiful sight to see.
I will take that good ol Southern Rock and Roll all day everyday and twice on Sunday... Ohhh and the Southern blues mixed in is always good .. lol Great Reaction... RIP to One if not the Great Southern band ever
Watch the documentary....you wont be dissatisfied! What was left of the band after the crash did eventually get back together and Ronnies little brother Johnny Van Zant sang.....and is singing for the band today after all the original members passed. I saw them along with ZZ Top woth my Daddy (rest in peace old man!) back in 1998 and it was the best concert of my life!

Last time I saw them was August 1977 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Hearing about the plane crash in October 1977 hit me hard. I knew the band personally. They played at venues I worked at in NYC. Artimus Pyle the drummer is the only member of the band still alive and touring as The Artimus Pyle Band and doing LS songs. Now that Gary Rossington has passed away I now consider the group using the name a tribute band.

So much tragedy in this band, it's bittersweet watching and listening to them as they are one of my favorite bands of all time. Still, they are beloved by so many of us for a reason. They did make it to the top, they did become one of the best bands of all time. To this day, LS gains more fans because they were true musicians. They worked their asses off to get to this brilliance. Pure talent, pure musicianship. RIP to all LS members that have passed on and a shoutout to Artimus who is still with us!

Unfortunately only Artimus is the only member still alive. Ronnie & Steve were killed in the crash along with Steve’s sister Casie and others. Allen was very messed up from it and never really recovered Leon & Billy had health issues and Gary just recently passed. Fantastic band that was just reaching the top
