It definitely would have been nice to have to support small peripherals like a wireless mouse/keyboard/headphones. Bluetooth has to much latency for some of those things so a wireless option would have been nice. Instead, I have several wireless dongles sticking out of my computer. For a wireless mouse for a laptop, you have to keep up with the dongle and if you lose the dongle, you have to get a new mouse. Definitely inconvenient.

All I see when I hear about USB standards are missed opportunities... it's an incredible feat of standardization wasted on bad nomenclature, lack of transparency towards costumers, and some baffling decisions I just cannot.
Guess it's the problem with leaving too much into the implementers side of things, and how badly informed consumers are about it.
We end up in a situation where a whole ton of tech gets limited by the lowest common denominator when it comes to adoption of parts of the specification.
Then again, not specific to USB. Seems all standards in computers and electronics falls in some grey area like that.

    • @walkinmn

    • @MartinFinnerup
      @MartinFinnerup 2 роки тому

That is more of a property of backwards compatibility.
Wanting to keep everything compatible, means you have to conform to the lowest common denominator, even if you can selectively use newer features as supported.
Just look at Windows. Their doctrine of making everything compatible (up until Win11) means that there is a ton of bloat slowing everything down.
This is however necessary, as you can't expect everything to always have the latest capabilities, especially when it comes to hardware.

I recently had the fortune of taking apart a $300 Laptop to replace the WiFi card. I found out that there was not only the space and molding in the case for a 2,5" harddrive but also that there was room on the PCB spared for another USB-Port. Like there was the hole and the traces. Just no hole in the chassie and therefore also no port. But one could just drill the hole and sorter the port on to that motherboard. Impressive where corners get cut.

    • @VitalVampyr

Sound is pressure waves. Wifi is electromagnetic waves, so hearing it would be impossible.
If you meant "could I hear a Wifi signal if it were converted to sound?" then that would also be "no". Humans can hear frequencies up to about 20 kHz. Consumer Wifi broadcasts around 2.4 GHz and the lowest (rarely used) Wifi channels are still over 700 MHz.
Infrasound has frequencies less than 20 Hz.

Another consideration, please permit me to observe, is that wired USB frequently was also used to power whatever peripheral was attached, rather than requiring the peripheral to have batteries or be energized via its own wired power supply. To make the USB sans power vitiates many of the usual USB use cases. It might still be nice to have an explicitly donglefied way of doing it, where it is acceptable to have one dongle of a pair (or perhaps, peripheral dongles to a hub) to contain a power supply, and the dongles having a reasonably secure way of identifying one another, but I've never actually seen it. Wireless printers with WiFi or even Bluetooth can be a pain in themselves due to other built in identification protocol requirements, whereas a USB wireless dongle system might be able to made to work simply by setting up a security code with switches or a built in TV-remote-style keypad on each side.

ah I was told that it was originally only intended for smaller devices to receive updates that didn't need a full Internet connection. however because the mass produced WiFi chips and antennas were becoming cheaper it just made sense to have said devices(door bells ,baby monitors to have a WiFi chip, also it could have been used for phones but then push updates became good.) if we had better wireless charging it would maybe have taken off but forcing a wire also ment that there was less risk that devices powered off during updates. and ofc back then during an update most devices were unusable. so it made sense to just force ppl to plus and wait. so potentially cause more issues that it solved.

I think it would have been quite a cool feature. To this date, there still isn't a good and easy way to transfer e.g photos from your phone to your pc without using a cloud service or cable.
You either use a cable, a cloud or additional software for wifi transfer. Would be cool if you could just connect to the PC on your phone with one press, select all photos and click send.
The only halfway usable solution using wifi currently is the link from android to your windows pc. On samsung phones, it is even integrated into the system. It allows to access your entire phone on your pc but the big downside is that microsoft somehow decided it would be a great idea to downscale and compress all photos transfered like this. A 12000x8000 20MB photo gets turned into a 2000x1600ish 2MB photo.

hehe, I remember once I bought a USB stick that didn't have any built in storage, you had to put in a microSD card, but the USB stick itself generated its own WiFi connection, had a little battery in it and everything. Funny enough it did have a standard USB plug at the end of it. Bad part was, if you could ever get it connected at all (was a pain in the ass to get it reliably connected) the transfer speeds were SO DAMN SLOW. Like the idea of it was solid, if you like had files saved to the USB drive, you could just connect to it with a phone to file transfer. But again, the connection and the transfer was so slow, I stopped using it after only a few weeks of trying. Well, I still used it as a standard USB stick, but I stopped trying to connect it wirelessly.
