This entire album felt like a trip back to the late 90s era of IDM and Warp Records, like a fast acidic hug from an old friend. Definitely my personal AOTY!
Be Up a Hello felt like his return to form album, but this.. Dostrotime feels like his culmination album! Favourite track is Akkranen but I can see others from this LP growing on me with more listens over the years.

LMAO!!! And to think, I recently began diving into Squarepusher's discography (by recent I mean the last 2 WEEKS) only to now see that he dropped another album!!! Boy have I got a ways to go but I'm looking forward to the journey ahead.

This album really does reflect someone coping with “lockdown”.
I love Tom’s talent for earworm tracks, but I have yet to find one on this album that makes me want to hum or drum along.
Still, I am thrilled Tom is in love with break chopping madness.
I hope his next release blends in a healthy dose of his melodic prowess.

hey, he has a remix of GoGo Penguin that he did after "be up a hello" and before this new one--it is FANTASTIC, up there with one of my favorite "tracks" of his (even if it's only a remix--i guess for remixes, it ranks up there with his remix of dj food). check it out if you haven't already, it's awesome! ---i'd like to add that i think the sequencing of dostrotime is really well-thought out. it feels like it peaks with fury and noise and just all out madness with domelash before the last two tracks very gently let you back down and whisk you away in a quite lovely fashion. I've been a fan of TJ since his early work on spymania and it's great to see he's still making a racket--almost 30 (!) years later!
This review reminded me how diverse Squarepusher's style is.. I wouldn't reject a throwback or Be Up A Hello round 2 though

Vast improvement on Be Up A Hello. Ebounce, Duneray and Kronmec are the clear standouts for me on this new album.
Enbounce is defintly my all time favorite from squarepusher. Tom jenkinson's at his frikkin peak!!
Fair review - don't forget that all his livesets from 2019-23 show he has about 2 other albums in him... not inclduing the NTS mix which you should review too. Domelash is amazing though - when you hear it in a liveset - you will know
Love Squarepusher’s early work - those first two albums are incredible. Was an avid fan for the first 12yrs or so - up until Just a Souvenir. But since that time I feel his work has become less interesting, predictable and not (square)pushing the envelope like he used to. I picked up this one on pink vinyl though - mainly for sentimental reasons especially as I felt the cover art resembles the Big Loada ep artwork.

Let's get real... everyone loves to get nostalgic for the ole sheet but truth is the modern day electronic is where it's at. Not saying nostalgia is a bad thing or that the vets can't still crank out sweet tunes... more the modern day production is completely next level and evolved.. as it should be. Loving seeing the evolution of electronic music ❤
I like it...he's still developing his digital techniques...although it can't touch AE LIVE 2022😅...Sean and Rob still scaling new peaks.
I was aware of Squarepusher before, but Be Up A Hello made me a fan in the same way Random Access Memories made me a fan of Daft Punk. They are my favorite albums from them and everything else is at best not as good.

Best since hello everything for me - really loved hello everything. But yeah dostrotime is deffo his best in ages, such a good album.

well that list was supposed to be about which artists are the most well known and that get people outside of our bubble talking the most, imo Vibert's more in the Mike Paradinas tier of popularity where he's a legend to those who know who he is but doesn't get even close to as much attention & press as the 4 names I actually listed
by the way Damoghen as "Go plastic 2" is pure fucking pants man. absolute poles apart UTTTERLY different vibe, sound, mixing, production, style. Methinks you're hearing "noise" on both or something. Nah
worth mentioning that I called Damogen Furies "Go Plastic meets Ufabulum" in this video, not "Go Plastic 2", I completely agree that Damogen & Go Plastic do in fact have entirely different approaches to their production and sound palette.
even if I'd argue the way both albums' approach to composition on paper with a more tuneful intro track and nearly everything else being written around the crazy percussion breakdowns do make them more comparable than you make them out to be, the whole point I was making there was that even what I previously considered to be the closest Squarepusher came to repeating himself pre-BUAH could still stand as its own unique thing in his catalog

no, Syro was the last thing RDJ put out that I still care about and everything afterwards has been a letdown. hence my saying "nearly a full decade"
when you think about it, there is 10 years between syro and analords, and i'm not a fan of syro as I am with analords, drukqs and his 90s stuff

havent read your comments or watched your take yet, but after 4 tracks i've gone from optimistic to pretty turned off on my first listen. i'm really tired of this version of squarepusher, phoning in this rehashed toneless beat soup. venetian snares has released 10 albums since 2010 that are all (VASTLY) more interesting than this. for real man. now maybe that's harsh. i do think you'd get much more out of revisiting V-Snares that you haven't heard yet than you'll get out of this... exercise... in what exactly
wondering when vsnares is going to release something new tho, guy was dropping multiple albums within a year for a while and just hasn't put out anything at all since the pandemic hit
ya, i think i was far too hard on this album. that was just my first listen and on another listen i enjoyed it much more. just love these reviews though, really fun way of learning about music and bouncing thoughts around.@@TheWonkyAngle

Ceephax can use dated 00's romplers and some acid kit and just make fun tunes for days, regardless of them all being derivative
