So glad you were getting to experience what I grew up with. I’m a 69-year-old grandmother. I love seeing the reaction of young people rediscovering the music of my era. The reason why the songs were about three minutes long is because they were played on the radio at that time and there was a limit on time of songs being played. I believe they couldn’t be played over 3 1/2 minutes so that’s why songs were shorter back then For the time if you have any questions or need suggestions of music from that day, I will happily recommend some songs. I will give you a recommendation of Dionne Warwick and her few songs walk on by and I say a little prayer for you. Those are some really really cool songs to listen to. Also, the Everly Brothers are another group that are really good singers with great harmonies great great music in the 60s and 70s great emotion and tender love songs. The Righteous Brothers were one of the best in the 60s! You’re my soul and my heart’s inspiration is another great one!

Stats on You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling by The Righteous Brothers. It took 39 takes, in 8 hours over two days before Phil Spector was satisfied with the entire composition. Spector used 4 acoustic guitars, 3 pianos, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 3 saxophones, a drummer, with The Blossoms singing the background vocals. It cost $35,000 to record this song in 1964 and as of 2015 it has been played more than 15 million times making it the most played song in BMI history. Since the song was 3 minutes and 45 seconds long and songs over 3 minutes were disliked by DJ's on the AM radio stations (because that meant less time for commercials) Spector put 3:05 on the label so the DJ's would play it. I was a sophomore in high school in 1964. This song is my all time favorite song ever and yes my high school sweetheart lost that lovin feeling for me and she broke my heart.

And Billy Joel referred to this in his song "The Entertainer:"
"It was a beautiful song, but it ran too long
If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to 3:05"

My girlfriend went with her mother to see the Righteous Brothers in Vegas and Bill Medley came out into the audience, took her by the hand, and sang a love song to her up on stage. I forgot what song she told me it was but I'll guarantee she remembers.

Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley (deep voice). Sadly, Bobby passed away in 2003. Bill is still going strong, touring and doing concerts. Bill hit the top of the charts in 1987 with "Time of My Life", a duet with Jennifer Warnes from the movie "Dirty Dancing". (You should listen to that one.) In 1990 Bobby's "Unchained Melody" was the background music for a love scene in the movie "Ghost". Because of the public's reaction, the album was rereleased and, in a recentish interview, Bill said he got a large box full of platinum records. One for every COUNTRY where the album sold more than a million copies. Those two are timeless.

Honey, back in 1964 all TV programs were black & white. Color didn't take hold until 1968 or so and even then they were quite expensive for the average family. Also, 1964, since this is a Live appearance there is no auto tune being use - it was invented yet. no other type of computer gadgets either. What you hear is just pure talent. You have already reacted to The Righteous Brothers (solo by Bobby Hatfield - RIP) -same thing - no auto tune then either. This song is the most played/aired song of the 20th century. The deep voice singer is Bill Medley. Their harmonies are incredible!

Robert Todd Duncan (opera singer, actor, professor) was the first to record "Unchained Melody", a popular song with music by Alex North who wrote the music for Unchained Melody as the theme for the prison film Unchained (1955).
“Unchained Melody” is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack.

There is a treasure trove of songs by the Righteous Brothers and after you check them all out find the video combining some of their appearances on Shindig which, like this one, was in black & white. You will see their comedic side; so funny. Color TV was just coming into use so many shows and existing TVs were still in black & white. Until Unchained Melody was sung on the Andy Williams Show, in color, we didn't know just how beautiful Bobby Hatfield really was and we could finally see the men's blue eyes. So glad you young folk are discovering something so special and are keeping the music of my time alive.

Have you checked out when Bobby does Summertime yet? It truly shows not only just how talented he is, but why they called them Blue Eyed Soul. Also, I can't find where you have checked out Tom Jones yet. Elvis simply called him The Voice. Listen to his tune, I'll never Fall in Love Again, and the power of his voice will sit you back in your chair. He's 83 now and is a judge on The Voice UK, and often sings duets and solo's and still had the most powerful voice on the stage. He is now Sir Tom Jones as he was Knighted by the Queen of England in 2006. Give me a shout out if you check him out, I want to see your reaction.

Color tv's started to pop up in the early 60's but they were very expensive and not really very good yet. By the mid 60's less than half the programing was broadcast in color. I remember we bought our first color-tv in 1964, an RCA Bridgeport model and we were so proud of it..Every week, I would search thru the TV Guide searching for shows that were in color...ah,the good old days....we've come a long way from then to what we have now... and a whole lot cheaper.
The lead singer on that song is bass singer, Bill Medley.Tenor Bobby Hatfield (R.I.P) is the shorter blond hair singer....you just don't hear harmonies like that anymore...GOAT!

I am old now, but in the mid 60's I was a teen aged dancer on many shows filmed in LA. I met the Righteous Brothers on the Lloyd Thaxton show in 1967. Now Wendy and I do the nightclub two step to this.

Word of caution. Going down this rabbit hole of music from past generations such as this may create purity of heart, and give you a glimpse into a point in time that you would have easily chosen over the disconnect of today’s society Considered simple and yet sincere with set morals as a grounding point of compassion for the very people standing next to you in a crowd

Listen to Soul And inspiration, if you already have not heard it. I can tell that there are hundreds if not thousands of 50's, 60's and 70's songs that so much better than what we hear today. I was a teenager during those years,(60's) saw some of these singers live on stage and I feel I was very lucky/blessed to experience all of this.

But for the wobbly spotlight, the choreography, and timing of this recording is perfect, a genuine classic! Can anyone identify Cher, in the backing singers?

Alot of songs from the late 1950's, into the 1960's, is the BEST time period to hear some of the great singers. You SHOULD LISTEN to Prety Woman/ I Drove all night.
