  • I rarely stress even though I'm often in very stressful or difficult situations so I thought it might be helpful to create this video all about how I think about stress.
It can be a very powerful thing that could either help or damage if you don't have stress under control. If this video is able to help just one person out there, I'll be happy so please let me know in the comments.

As a high school art teacher, my struggle with stress broke me this year. I had no balance. It was all work all the time from 5:30 am till I fell asleep on my laptop at 12 at night. I was even working in the shower. I was working during lunch, if I ate lunch. And yet I still felt behind. My dearest hope is to get this stress I feel under control because I don't even know why I'm sacrificing my well being for this. I want to make art again so desperately.

One of the big Art Stressors for me is my age: I'm 34, and started drawing seriously at 31. I don't aspire to be a professional, but I do want to achieve a high celling, and it feels unreachable because I started later in life. But, like the elephant, it's one bite at a time. I'll try measuring measuring success with effort, we'll see how that goes.

Hey, age ain't nothing but a number!! Don't let that stop you from pursuing your interest in art. It's never too late to become an artist, so as long as you're willing to practice, you can totally do it!!! No question about it. Good luck to you!! :)

I started in my mid-40s, been working away on my art for 6 or seven years now. So, I know that nagging feeling well :) It actually felt like an uphill climb for a long time, because there's always more amazing art and incredible artists every time you turn a corner, in all genres and mediums. In my mind, ithey would all merge to one god-like uber artist capable of doing everything, unreachable. Realizing the fault in that thinking has helped me a lot. The artists I admire most have carved out their own niche - they shaped the space they excel in, instead of trying to excel in someone elses space, if that makes any sense. So, my art journey turns more and more into developing a sense for what is a natural fit for me, and letting go of a ton of other things (hurts every time, though). Needless to say, it's still years and years of hard work and no shortcuts ;)

@@koljak9395 Hat off to you for going through your art journey and sharing it! You hit the nail on the head describing this perception of everyone else's capabilities merging together into one amazing uber-artist is really dangerous, and happens so easily.
I also really appreciate your thoughts on carving one's niche rather than trying to excel in mimicry, that's definitely something I have to remind myself of often! Wishing you all the best going forward with your art journey !

If you think of meditation as exercise for the brain ( wich it is) it becomes easier to justify sitting down for 20 mins.
it's still unconfortable, but so it physical exercise right, and we still do it.
This is the key atually, if you can sit down with an unconfortable sensation, you have gained mastery over your body and mind. I still have a long way to go, but it's insane how much this practice has helped me with things like addiction and social anxiety.
Frontal lobe push ups! (and just like physical exercise, it gets easier the more you do it)

"Am I trying my hardest? Am I putting in the time? Am I trying to be logical?" I wish these sorts of methods of reframing worked better for me. Asking myself if I’m trying my hardest or putting in time usually devolves into ruminating about whether or not I’m trying hard *enough* or putting in *enough* time. I think part of this comes from a background where I’ve been led to believe that “working hard” means pushing yourself to the edge of collapse all the time

    • @matsu820
      @matsu820 3 роки тому +1

@@bobamilkbee736 Try and take one more step back and assess the situation again. Where does the rumination come from? Assess the rumination itself when you notice it rising up. These are all functions of the mind and they don't have to hold you back. But to overcome them requires time and effort, honesty and perhaps a little self-compassion.

Wonderful video, Bobby! Recently I realized that under the guise of being a "workaholic" I was actually just chasing highs of 'getting things done' or 'getting validation'. But as soon as my semester was over and I had nothing immediately stressing me, I actually started feeling depressed and listless, as if I wasn't achieving anything! Just goes to show how brains can internalize stress as something normal, without realizing the damage being done.

@@BobbyChiu thats an interesting point. i haven't been using my subscriptions to online classes well then. ill dedicate focus time to them but get burnt out on a lot of fluff and filler info i didnt need. after 3 hours of lectures from an online course ill feel like i just learned things i already knew, or things that wont help me right now. i didnt think to just stream the course while im working and get the golden nuggets, similar to skimming through books. that is one downside to online lectures - they go into great detail since they are time based medium, but the issue is a lot of things aren't that useful at the moment. easier to find golden nuggets in books by skimming the text

An example given of the cause of stress/worry, was if whoever commissioned the drawing didn't like the product. Then later it's said that all the thoughts that were going by, all the stress stuff, was about something you couldn't control, it was all in somebody else's hands. So one shouldn't worry. But the thing is, it *is* in your hands. If you worry about if they'll accept it, then it's in your hands to make the drawing good enough. You are the one making the piece that they will judge as good enough for their money or not, it's all on you. Stress or don't stress, it's all good, but in a scenario where expectations are to be met and it's all on your own effort and skill to meet them, then it's not something out of your control.

I think it's also worth mentioning that you should pay attention to what lights a fire under you. After going through school, a lot of my desires got muddied between the different courses I took, and it took me a while to really notice that I loved doing animation (2D and 3D) and illustration. Of course there may be other little things you should know in the job, but if that specific subject just gets you itching to make something beautiful, that's what you should pursue. Thank you Bobby Chiu for this video! It really did help me relieve unnecessary stress off my shoulders! Lately, I’ve been spending way too much time worrying about my art to the point I didn’t feel like drawing anymore. It was pretty unhealthy 😬. It was because I’m going to start my art education in Animation and VFX at a Liberal Arts College in less than two months. I’m not sure what will be in store for me during my four years of college, so I built up this fear of the unknown. For sure though, I will be implementing this mindset in everything I do as I continue my path. I really don’t know where I’ll be, but as you said you gotta take it one step at a time. Again thank you so much! I’m really thinking to sign up for schoolism soon! 😊

omg this was exactly me. I was stressing about my art career for a year until the point where I couldn't stop stressing even before sleep. It was a shit year and the work I did that year was not great. Eventually I came to a conclusion that all this stressing and worrying is not working and not doing anything positive for me or my career, so I stopped, took it slow because constantly thinking about it clearly didn't work. The work that I took my time to finish in a clear state of mind is clearly better.

Hi Bobby. I was wondering do you ever get bored of doing art? Like wonder what if I did something else? It feels so daunting to think of all the work I need to do sometimes to reach my goals. I am already a working artist and doing some projects that I'm sure many students would kill for but I am not happy because I am doing other peoples work. I feel burnt out and I feel like a hamster running on a wheel. I need to keep running to stay at the top of my game. You say you like to learn regularly? Does that get boring? I try to learn regularly and I get so bored....I am already doing art 8-10 hours a day. Watching an educational art video on top of that sounds like a drag to me. It also irritates me because I barely have time to apply the lessons I am learning because of my long work schedule....anyways would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I have a tendency to overthink everything. While I love what you're saying here, I do have to ask: how do I know if I'm putting in enough effort? Is there an exact number of hours? So glad you enjoyed this video! And, yes! Strictly speaking, the only course you need to have Photoshop for is "Digital Painting with Bobby Chiu". For our other courses, the instructor might show you a specific technique in Photoshop, but what's more important is that you're familiar enough with your preferred program, in this case Procreate, to be able to execute the techniques that they teach. As long as you know your program or media well enough to apply the technique, then Photoshop is not vitally necessary. :) Hope this helps and we hope to see you on Schoolism! :)

I'm kinda tired of people putting meditation under the rug. Meditation requires an amount of discipline, its not something you do just willy nilly and expect it to work the first time. You dont go to the gym expecting to get ripped the next day. I dont know why so many people expect so much from meditation by only doing it a few times.
