  • This video (and channel) are dedicated to my journey as an online snhu student majoring in environmental science with a concentration in natural resources and concentration!
    I am starting my first term at SNHU next week (March 4th!) and wanted to share my snhu online review with the others out there who are seeking to gain their first, second, or hundredth degree!

    I'm starting with SNHU next month. Thank you for this video as I found it very helpful. I started reading over my coursework and just got a bit overwhelmed on how to go about it.

      If you have the time available for your work you will have no trouble with the content. The content/curriculum is very manageable. I find the greater struggle is fitting it into your schedule depending your level of responsibilities. I’m wishing you the best of luck with your educational journey and career! ✨❤️

    I am in my second year as a psychology student at SNHU. Its been one of the best experiences and smartest decision ive ever made. My daughter has now enrolled and started the fasfa processes. She also will be doing environmental science. Hope you dont mind my recommendation of you to her. Good luck!

      Oh my goodness congratulations to you both! I will say though, to be fully transparent with you, I left SNHU for a more traditional environmental science program. Ultimately, the program didn’t satisfy my needs. However, I do plan on posting environmental science student content very soon and there’s a few channels on UA-cam as well who document their environmental science journey. I wish you both the absolute best. You’ve got this! ✨❤️

    Thinking about this degree. I've done science and some math Sophia courses including Chemistry and chem lab (chem 1001 & 1002), same with human biology. I've done anatomy and physiology (scie1050), intro to statistics (Stat1001), College algebra (CA1001) Geography 1001, Environmental science 1001, plus a lot of other gen ed classes like communications, English 1-2, history etc. The math was super hard and I had to have coaches help me and even then I barely passed. So with the Enviro Science degree I worry about the physics class and doing the statistics class again..

    • @amandathealmostscientist
      @amandathealmostscientist  2 місяці тому

      Your fear is understandable. I'll be taking a Calculus 1&2 course that I'm terrified for. But we can't let a couple of classes get in the way of an entire degree. If you really believe you'll struggle with those subjects and you've been able to knock out some classes via Sophia, I would recommend balancing your workload when it comes time to take those classes. Either only take one class at a time or take Physics/Statistics with an easier course! Wishing you the best of luck.

      Congrats! I wish I had known about this career path upon graduating high school but better late than never. There are SO many routes you can take with this degree. The key is to get as much hands on experience (ideally through paid internships) as you can to a) see what path you’d want to take but also b) to have the field experience to connect the academics to application and to make yourself a standout candidate upon graduation. I would continue researching as I’m sure you have been and even trying to connect with people in the field. People love talking about themselves lol. Hope this helps and wish you luck!

    I'm 31 years old and I'm thinking about going to back to school specifically online. I have a child and going to a traditional school is out the question. My first thought is I'm scared to fail, I've never done online school work and I'm trying to decide if this the best route for me. I went to a traditional school after I graduated High School and was about 18-19 at the time. My question is How do you stay focus and motivated while going through everyday life ? I know going back to school is really something I want to do but I'm so nervous about failing and dropping out like I did when I went to a traditional school. I'm scared to put myself into more debt that I can't afford to pay back. Please, please respond about your thoughts. Thanks for this video ;-)

    • @amandathealmostscientist
      @amandathealmostscientist  2 місяці тому +1

      Hello! First, it's so interesting to me that someone with a child could be afraid of school. You were courageous and resilient enough to have/raise a child. If you can do that, you can literally do ANYTHING. School is challenging, but in the grand scheme of life it is absolute peanuts to the ups and downs involved with being a parent. :)
      1. As far as staying focused and motivated, I think what's great about SNHU's online program is that there is structure but there is also repetition. For instance, you will ALWAYS have assignments due on Sunday and Thursday. All of your assignments will be posted in your rubric and made available to you at the start of the school year. Therefore, you can plan out your entire term from day one.
      2. Additionally, many of the professors are really kind and if you reach out to them with your concerns they will do their best to support you. Your advisor is also there to advocate for you.
      3. Another thing to consider is that although SNHU terms are short you only take two classes to be considered full-time. Part-time is one class per term. You can always try out just taking one class per term and when you feel as if you have a routine down you can bump up to two classes! Remember, SNHU's program really is geared towards people who are in your situation. Working adults with family, fulltime jobs, and other commitments.
      4. You can visit SNHU's website and their course catalogue and have a sort of "preview" of all their classes. This will give you a good idea of what you can expect depending on what major you choose. Also, there's Reddit, Discord, and so many other resources out there to support you.
      As far as motivation goes. Motivation will always come and go. It's more about being disciplined and in a sense treating your educational journey as your second "child" who you must nurture and invest your time and energy into. And remember that you're doing this for yourself and to improve the quality of your life and consequently the quality of your family's life. Wishing you the absolute best! If you have more questions please let me know.

    Are books free? Also, do you have tests or quizzes and are they proctored? What are typical assessments in a week? Thanks!

    • @amandathealmostscientist
      @amandathealmostscientist  4 місяці тому +1

      Books are not free. I paid for mine using a book voucher that was part of my financial aid. There's one class that I had to take where I didn't buy the book and was totally fine (totally fine as in got an A on each assignment including the final project). The class is IDS-105 Cultural Awareness & Online Learning. As far as tests or quizzes go, I haven't had a test and the few quizzes that I've had have been through Mastering Geology and were definitely not proctored. A typical week in assignments (for my major of course; this may be different for other courses/majors) looks like this:
      1. One to two discussion posts on a weekly basis; generally one discussion post but I have had a week where we had two separate posts. The discussion posts are always due on Thursdays and part of your grade comes from responding to at least two of your peers' posts.
      2. One Google Earth Assignment (I believe out of 8 modules I've had 3 Google Earth assignments; these are not necessarily weekly)
      3. One critical essay (the essay was around 1-2 pages and I believe I've had 3 of them total; again, these are not weekly)
      Also, there's a quite a bit of reading assigned each week (anywhere from 20-60 pages). You do not HAVE to do the reading but you will be better off in the short and long term if you do.
      Again, this may vary based on your courses and major but from the research I've done this is SNHU's format. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions. :)
